For Nintendo 3DS emulation on a dual-screen Android handheld, start Azahar at native 1x internal resolution (400×240), choose a layout that suits the physical screens, then test the Android secondary-display option in a game. Increase resolution only in small steps: higher scales can look sharper but may significantly affect performance, and results depend on the device and game.
Install Azahar and start with a stable baseline
Azahar is a free, open-source Nintendo 3DS emulator for PC and mobile that continues Citra’s legacy. Its official project repository lists Android distribution through Google Play and direct or Obtainium installation routes, and recommends the Play build for most people who prefer easier access. Check the repository for current version and distribution details before installing, since those can change.

- Install a current Android build of Azahar using a distribution route listed by the project.
- Open the graphics settings and select internal resolution 1x, the documented native setting of 400×240.
- Launch a game and confirm it displays and responds as expected before changing additional settings.
Starting at native resolution provides a useful baseline if performance or display behavior is unclear. The 2123.3 release notes say that release primarily addressed issues experienced by users of dual-screen Android devices. That is a reason to use a recent build, not a guarantee of compatibility with every handheld, graphics backend, or game.

Choose an internal resolution that your handheld can handle
Internal-resolution scaling changes the resolution at which the emulator renders the 3DS screens. Higher integer multiples can improve visual quality, but the Azahar core documentation warns that higher values can significantly affect performance. There is no universal best scale: the practical choice depends on the handheld and the game.

The Azahar core documentation describes the resolution choices and cautions about performance at higher values. Raise the setting one available step at a time, then play long enough to judge whether the result remains acceptable; do not assume that a scale that works in one game will work equally well in another.
Do not confuse resolution with texture filtering
Texture filtering is a separate graphics setting, not another name for internal-resolution scaling. The documentation lists filtering options and notes that some can also significantly affect performance. If you are diagnosing slowdown, change one setting at a time so you can tell whether resolution or filtering is responsible.

Pick a main layout for the screens you actually have
The standard documented layout choices are default top-bottom, single screen, large screen/small screen, and side by side. Their purpose is to arrange the two emulated displays for the viewing area available; the exact appearance can vary by app build and device. The core reference documents these options, but its menu organization should not be treated as a guaranteed Android settings path.

The core documentation also describes screen swapping set to toggle or hold. Use the behavior that best fits the chosen layout and controls, then verify in-game that the screen you need is the one currently prominent or visible.

Configure Azahar’s Android secondary display separately
On a handheld with two physical Android displays, the auxiliary-panel setting is distinct from the standard core layout. Azahar’s Android secondary-display feature was merged on August 8, 2025. The feature pull request describes support for a second screen through a physical connection or screen mirroring through Chromecast or Miracast, and documents Android options for system-default mirroring, top-screen-only, bottom-screen-only, and side-by-side presentations.
- In Azahar’s Android settings, locate the secondary-display layout control. The precise menu path can vary by build, so do not rely on a libretro core menu path as an Android instruction.
- Select the option that best matches the handheld’s physical panels: system-default mirroring, top screen only, bottom screen only, or side by side.
- Launch a game and inspect both physical panels. Confirm which emulated screen appears on each and whether the arrangement is useful for that game.
- Test touch input on the lower panel in a game that uses it. The feature work discusses touchscreen interaction, but does not establish universal compatibility across devices and input combinations.
Think of the core layout as arranging the emulated screens and the Android secondary-display control as deciding how output is presented on an additional physical display. They may work together, but setting one does not prove the other is configured as intended.

Troubleshoot a bad layout or performance problem
- Slow or uneven performance after increasing resolution: return to 1x, then test a lower scale or change only one graphics setting at a time. Higher internal resolutions and some filters can carry a substantial performance cost.
- Both panels show the same image or the wrong screen: check the Android secondary-display selection and verify the assignment in-game. Do not assume the main-screen layout alone determines the auxiliary panel’s output.
- Touch does not work as expected: test the lower panel in a title that uses touch, and confirm the behavior on the specific handheld. The documented feature does not certify every device/input combination.
- A layout change crashes or produces an unexpected result: return to a conservative layout and native resolution, confirm you are using a recent Azahar build, then adjust one variable at a time.
An optional capacitive stylus may suit players who prefer pen input for touch controls, but it is not required; check compatibility with the handheld’s touchscreen before buying one.
