How to Configure macOS Lock-Screen and Privacy Settings When You Leave Your Mac Unattended

For reliable protection when you step away, combine an immediate manual lock with a password requirement after the screen sleeps, then review what the login window reveals and what other accounts or apps can access. On macOS Ventura 13 and later, these controls are in System Settings; older releases use System Preferences. The settings below separate session security, data-at-rest protection, account privileges, guest access and app permissions so you can choose the right trade-offs instead of relying on one switch.

Start with the protection that matters when you walk away

A locked screen protects the user session that is already open. It is different from encrypting the drive, signing out, or automatically logging out. A practical baseline is:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Set Require password after screen saver begins or display is turned off to the shortest interval you can tolerate, ideally Immediately when that option is available.
  • Lock manually every time you leave, rather than waiting for an inactivity timer.
  • Use a locked-screen message that helps a legitimate finder contact you without exposing sensitive details.
  • Hide account names if people nearby should not learn which accounts exist.
  • Consider automatic logout only when interrupting applications and unsaved work is acceptable.
  • Use FileVault, separate standard accounts and carefully scoped app permissions as additional layers.

Apple documents the relevant controls in its Lock Screen settings guide and its guidance on requiring a password after waking.

Make macOS require a password after sleep

macOS Ventura 13 and later

  1. Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
  2. Select Lock Screen.
  3. Set how long the display can remain inactive when the Mac is running on battery.
  4. Set the corresponding inactivity period when the Mac is connected to a power adapter.
  5. Set Require password after screen saver begins or display is turned off to Immediately, or to the shortest delay shown that fits your workflow.

The inactivity controls determine when the display sleeps or the screen saver starts; the password control determines how long macOS waits before demanding authentication after that event. A long password delay leaves an opportunity for someone beside the Mac to interact with the already-open session, even though the display has just gone dark. A short delay is more secure but can require more frequent authentication during brief pauses.

Battery and power-adapter values can be different. A portable Mac used in a public place generally benefits from a shorter display-on period on battery, while a desk-bound Mac may use a longer period on external power to avoid unnecessary interruptions. Apple does not prescribe one interval for every person or environment, so choose based on the physical exposure of the computer and how often you need an unattended display.

Older macOS releases

On releases before Ventura, open Apple menu > System Preferences > Security & Privacy and look for the setting that requires a password after sleep or the screen saver begins. Menu names and available intervals vary by release. If a control is missing, check the labels on the installed version rather than assuming the newer System Settings path applies.

Organization-managed Macs can have settings imposed or hidden by a management profile. Automatic login is also unavailable in some configurations, including when FileVault is enabled; Apple explains the limitations in its automatic-login documentation.

Lock immediately instead of waiting for a timer

An inactivity timer is a safety net, not a leaving-the-desk procedure. Lock the Mac as part of the physical action of standing up. A Hot Corner provides a fast, mouse-based trigger:

  1. Open System Settings and choose Desktop & Dock.
  2. Scroll to Hot Corners.
  3. Assign a corner to the lock-screen action (the exact label can differ by macOS release).
  4. Move the pointer into that corner whenever you leave.

Test the corner from every display and desk position you use. A corner that is easy to hit accidentally can lock the Mac while you are working; one that is blocked by a dock or another monitor may not be dependable. You can also use the system’s built-in lock command from the Apple menu when it is more convenient than moving the pointer.

Locking preserves the open session, but it is not a physical anti-theft measure. Apple cautions that a person at the Mac can still shut down or restart it; after the restart, they face the normal login and disk-protection controls. Save documents before leaving if an application does not save automatically, because locking does not protect against a forced restart or a power interruption. See Apple’s password-after-wake instructions and secure-Mac guidance for the distinction between an active-session lock and broader security measures.

Control what the login window discloses

In System Settings > Lock Screen, review the options that affect the screen someone sees after the Mac is locked, sleeps or restarts. These are privacy decisions as much as interface preferences.

Password hints

Do not create a hint that reveals a word, date, name or pattern associated with the password. A hint is visible at the login window and can turn a small clue into an easy guess. If you need a reminder, use a private password manager or another method that is not displayed to anyone standing near the Mac.

Locked-screen message

A short message can help return a misplaced Mac. Use a contact method that does not reveal your home address, travel plans or other sensitive information—for example, a work email address or a phone number intended for lost-property contact. Keep it concise enough to read on the login window.

Account-name display

Choose between listing user accounts and requiring the person at the login window to enter both an account name and password. Listing names is convenient for a household or a small team, but it tells observers which accounts exist. Requiring both fields discloses less and makes casual account enumeration harder, at the cost of an extra typing step for legitimate users.

Sleep, restart and shut-down buttons

Decide whether those controls should appear on the login window. Hiding them can reduce what an unauthorized person can do from the screen, while showing them is convenient for shared equipment or a Mac that must be shut down without signing in. This choice does not stop someone from using the physical power control or otherwise forcing a restart, so it should not be treated as an anti-theft feature. Apple lists these choices in its Lock Screen settings documentation.

Use automatic logout only when ending the session is acceptable

For stronger protection in a public or shared area, open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Advanced. Depending on the macOS release and account permissions, you may find controls for requiring an administrator password to change system-wide settings and for logging out automatically after a period of inactivity. Apple describes these options in its Privacy & Security Advanced settings guide.

Administrator authentication for system-wide changes

Enable the requirement for an administrator password when changing settings that affect the whole Mac. This prevents a person using a standard account from approving sensitive changes with only the current session’s access. It also means you will need administrator credentials for legitimate maintenance, so make sure an authorized administrator is available.

Automatic logout

Automatic logout is not a more aggressive screen lock. It ends the user session after the selected idle period, closes applications and can discard unsaved work. Open documents, background jobs, remote connections and long-running tasks may be interrupted. Use it on a kiosk-like or highly exposed Mac where ending the session is more important than preserving work; avoid it on a workstation where an unattended compile, export or data transfer must continue.

Before enabling it, test the behavior with a short interval and confirm how your essential applications handle logout. If the test interrupts work, use immediate password-after-wake plus manual locking instead. The security benefit comes from removing the active session, while the operational cost is that every return begins with a fresh sign-in and application restart.

Protect stored data with FileVault and sensible accounts

FileVault and hardware encryption

Session locking protects an active login; FileVault protects data when the Mac is shut down or the storage is removed. Apple says Macs with Apple silicon or a T2 Security Chip encrypt data automatically. Enabling FileVault adds a requirement for the login password to access the encrypted data. This is complementary to the lock screen: FileVault does not replace a password-after-wake setting, and a lock screen does not provide the same protection for data at rest after shutdown.

FileVault recovery information matters. Keep the recovery method available to an authorized owner, because losing both the login credentials and recovery path can make encrypted data inaccessible. Apple’s explanation of encryption and secure account setup is at Keep your work private and secure.

Separate users and limit administrator privileges

Create a separate account for each person who uses the Mac instead of sharing one login. Apple recommends limiting administrator privileges and using a standard account for routine work. A standard account reduces the damage a careless installer or malicious process can do without an administrator’s approval, while a dedicated administrator account remains available for maintenance.

Account separation also keeps each user’s files and settings distinct. It does not make an unlocked Mac safe: anyone who can use an already-authenticated session can access whatever that session can access. That is why manual locking and an immediate password requirement remain essential even when every person has an individual account.

Decide whether Guest User should be available

If friends, customers or temporary users need occasional access, review System Settings > Users & Groups and the Guest User options. Guest access is a deliberate sharing decision, not a harmless default.

  • Files created by a guest are stored in a temporary folder and deleted when the guest logs out.
  • When FileVault is enabled, a guest can use Safari but cannot access the encrypted disk or create files on it.
  • Without FileVault, guest behavior and available access can differ, so verify the settings on the specific Mac.

Enable Guest User when temporary web access is useful and the loss of guest-created files is expected. Disable it when the Mac contains confidential material, is assigned to one person, or is in a location where any untrusted local access is unacceptable. Apple documents the controls and FileVault interaction in Change Guest User settings on Mac.

Audit app access to sensitive resources

Screen locking does not stop an already-authorized application from using permissions it has been granted. Open System Settings > Privacy & Security and review categories such as Location Services, Camera and Microphone. Grant access based on the app’s actual function, not merely its name or publisher. Remove access that is no longer needed and revisit the list after installing or updating software.

Permission changes can affect legitimate features: revoking microphone access can break a video call, and revoking location access can remove location-based functions. Make changes one category at a time, test the affected app, and leave only the permissions required for the task. Apple’s broader privacy and security guidance is available at Keep your work private and secure.

Choose settings by situation

Situation Lock-screen choice Additional layer Main trade-off
Brief absences at home Manual lock; immediate password after display off Separate accounts for household members More frequent sign-ins
Open office or classroom Manual lock plus a short inactivity interval; consider hiding account names Standard daily account and restricted app permissions Less convenience at shared login screens
Public-facing or kiosk-like Mac Immediate password after wake Automatic logout after a tested idle period; disable unnecessary guest access Open work is closed and unsaved changes may be lost
Travel with confidential files Lock before moving the Mac; no password delay if practical FileVault, separate accounts and minimal administrator use Recovery and administrator credentials must be managed carefully
Shared temporary browsing Manual lock between users Guest User with FileVault enabled Guest files disappear at logout and cannot be recovered from the temporary folder

The table is a decision aid, not a universal policy. Apple documents the available controls but does not define one correct timer or one required combination for every Mac.

What locking does—and does not—protect

  • Protects: the currently open session from ordinary keyboard, pointer and application use until authentication succeeds.
  • Does not protect: against someone shutting down or restarting the Mac, taking the computer, or exploiting a separate physical or hardware weakness.
  • Does not replace: FileVault for data at rest, account separation for independent users, or permission reviews for camera, microphone and location access.
  • Can be weakened by: a delayed password requirement, an exposed password hint, listed account names, an administrator account used for everyday work, or an unattended session that was never locked.

Use the layers together: lock the session immediately, require authentication promptly after sleep, encrypt stored data, and reduce the privileges and permissions available to routine software.

Troubleshoot missing or ineffective controls

The Lock Screen option is not where the instructions say

Confirm the macOS release. Ventura 13 and later use System Settings > Lock Screen; earlier versions use System Preferences > Security & Privacy. Apple can change labels and available intervals between releases, and organization profiles can hide or enforce settings.

The Mac wakes without asking for a password

Return to the password-after-wake control and choose the shortest available delay. Check both battery and power-adapter behavior, and test from a locked state rather than only from the screen saver preview. If the Mac is managed by an organization, the profile may control the value.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Automatic logout is disrupting work

Disable or lengthen automatic logout after confirming that it is the cause. Replace it with manual locking and immediate password-after-wake when applications need to stay open. Save work before leaving and test any workflow that must continue unattended.

FileVault or automatic login behaves differently than expected

Review the Mac’s hardware and security configuration and the account settings. Apple notes that automatic login is unavailable in some situations, including when FileVault is enabled. Do not weaken encryption or remove authentication merely to make unattended use more convenient; adjust the workflow instead.

A maintainable routine

After the initial setup, make locking part of the same routine as closing a laptop lid or turning away from a desk. Recheck Lock Screen and Privacy & Security settings after a major macOS upgrade, after changing users, and after installing software that requests camera, microphone or location access. Revisit the choice of Guest User whenever the Mac’s physical location or audience changes. This keeps the configuration aligned with how the Mac is actually used rather than with an old one-time setup.

Bottom line

Use an immediate manual lock for every absence and set macOS to request the password as soon as the screen saver starts or the display turns off. Then decide separately whether you need a less revealing login window, automatic logout, FileVault, standard accounts, Guest User or tighter app permissions. Each control addresses a different exposure; together they protect the active session, stored data and the people who share the Mac without making one setting carry responsibilities it was never designed to handle.
