Configure Vintage Story land claiming in two layers: edit per-role limits in the roles section of serverconfig.json, and control whether the world permits claiming with allowLandClaiming. Role settings determine how much land a player may claim, the smallest cuboid they can create, and how many separate areas they may hold. The world setting is a master on/off switch.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Vintage Story servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
For an existing world, change world behavior with the in-game command rather than relying on a newly edited world configuration. Defaults can vary by game release, so verify the live file and in-game help before applying a value. The official World Configuration page was last verified for Vintage Story 1.21.6; newer releases may differ.

Land claiming is not controlled by one universal number. Vintage Story separates permissions into role-level limits and a world-level switch.
Role-level limits
Each player belongs to a server role. The role entry contains three land-claim keys:
#1 Best Overall
- [Ultra-Lightweight Ear Buds Designed for Small Ears] Each earbud weighs only 3.7g and features a compact, ergonomic in-ear design made especially for small ears. Secure, low-profile, and comfortable for workouts, all-day wear or overnight sleeping. The ultra-slim profile sits flush in your ear with no hard edges poking or rubbing, so you can even sleep on your side without discomfort.
- [Immersive Stereo Sound with TOZO OrigX Technology] TOZO OrigX tuning delivers clear vocals, balanced mids, and natural stereo sound for music, podcasts, and videos.
- [Long Battery Life for Daily Use] Get up to 7 hours of playtime on a single charge, with up to 32 hours total using the charging case—ideal for workdays, commuting, and extended listening sessions.
- [Bluetooth 5.3 & Stable Connection] Bluetooth 5.3 provides fast pairing, stable wireless performance, and reduced dropouts as you move around home or office.
- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
LandClaimAllowancesets the total claimable volume for that role, measured in cubic metres.LandClaimMinSizesets the smallest cuboid a role may claim, with separate X, Y and Z dimensions.LandClaimMaxAreassets how many non-adjacent claim areas the role may maintain.
These values belong under roles in serverconfig.json. Changing a role value affects players who use that role; it does not by itself turn claiming on or off for the world.
World-level switch
allowLandClaiming is a world configuration value. The Vintage Story Wiki describes it as whether players are allowed to use the land-claiming system, with a default of true. Set it with /worldconfig allowLandClaiming true or /worldconfig allowLandClaiming false when you need to permit or prohibit claiming for the entire world.

Check version and current values first
Land-claim defaults and command names are version-sensitive. The official World Configuration documentation was last verified for version 1.21.6, and a later release can change defaults or command behavior. Before editing, check the server’s actual serverconfig.json and use the game’s command help to confirm syntax accepted by your build.
- Keep the server version and the configuration documentation version in mind when comparing examples.
- Read the existing role objects instead of replacing the whole roles section.
- Record the original values so you can restore them if a limit causes unexpected gameplay.
- If a hosting panel presents a configuration form, confirm that its field names map to the same keys shown in the file.
The minimum-size default is not consistent across the available hosting documentation: one BisectHosting guide lists 5×5×5, while its commands guide lists 6×6×6. Treat neither as authoritative for your installation; inspect the live configuration and verify the value in-game.

Configure a hosted server through its files
The hosting guides describe the same basic workflow whether you edit the JSON directly or use a provider’s server-configuration tab. Stop the process before saving changes so the server does not overwrite the file while it is running.

- Stop the server. Use the control panel’s Stop button and wait until the status shows that the process has exited.
- Open the server files. Browse to
server_data > serverconfig.json. - Locate the Roles section. Find the role object that should receive the new limits. Do not edit a different role accidentally; role names and permissions are independent of the land-claim keys.
- Edit the three keys as needed. Change
LandClaimAllowance,LandClaimMinSize, andLandClaimMaxAreasonly in the intended role entry. Preserve JSON punctuation, quotation marks, and commas. - Save the file. If the host provides a configuration tab instead of a text editor, save the equivalent fields there and make sure the panel reports a successful write.
- Start the server. Watch the startup log or console for a configuration parse error. A server that cannot parse the file may reject the change or fail to start.
Editing role limits this way is appropriate for server configuration. It does not replace the world-level command when your objective is to disable claiming in an already-created world.

Set the claim allowance deliberately
LandClaimAllowance is a volume budget, not a count of blocks on one horizontal layer. The documented default is expressed as four chunks, with each chunk treated as 32 blocks in X, Y and Z; the resulting volume is 131,072 cubic metres. A cuboid consumes volume according to all three dimensions, so increasing height can use the same allowance faster than a flat footprint.
When choosing a value, decide whether your server wants compact protected homes, large vertical bases, or several modest builds. A single role allowance is shared across that role’s claims, so players who divide their budget among multiple areas have less volume available for each individual area. Explain that trade-off to players before changing the number.
- Use a larger allowance for a role intended to protect substantial builds, mines, or vertical structures.
- Use a smaller allowance when the server’s priority is shared building space and limited private territory.
- Pair the volume budget with
LandClaimMaxAreas; a generous allowance with many areas can produce a very different result from the same allowance restricted to one area. - Test a representative cuboid after the restart so players see how the server counts volume in practice.
Set the minimum claim size safely
LandClaimMinSize is a three-axis minimum: X, Y and Z. A claim smaller than any required axis should be rejected. Because published defaults conflict, do not copy a number from an old tutorial without checking your own server.
Resolve the documented conflict
One BisectHosting guide reports a 5×5×5 minimum, while a separate BisectHosting commands guide reports 6×6×6. The discrepancy may reflect a version difference or documentation error. The reliable procedure is to read the current value in serverconfig.json, then attempt a test claim at the boundary in a safe area. If the boundary behavior does not match the file, consult the version’s in-game help and startup output before changing anything else.

Choose dimensions for the type of build
Equal dimensions are easiest to explain, but the setting is explicitly X, Y and Z, so an administrator can establish different horizontal and vertical minimums when the current game version accepts them. Keep the rule understandable to players: a minimum that is too large can prevent protection of small starter structures, while one that is too small can create many tiny claims that are difficult to administer.
Limit separate claim areas
LandClaimMaxAreas controls the number of non-adjacent areas a role may hold. Adjacent expansions are conceptually different from separate outposts: the setting is intended to limit the latter. The documented default is three areas.
Lowering this value can discourage scattered reservations and make abandoned claims easier to identify. Raising it can support players who legitimately need several distant builds, but it also increases the number of isolated regions that staff may need to review. Decide whether your server treats an outpost, a mine, and a main base as separate areas before selecting a policy.
Enable or disable land claiming for the world
The world switch is independent of role allowances. If allowLandClaiming is false, players cannot use the claiming system even when their role has generous limits. If it is true, each role’s allowance, minimum size, and area count still apply.
Disable claiming in an existing world
- Join the server with an account that can run world-configuration commands.
- Enter
/worldconfig allowLandClaiming false. - Confirm the command is accepted and test the behavior with a player account that previously could claim.
Re-enable claiming
Run /worldconfig allowLandClaiming true, then test a small permitted claim. If the command is rejected, use the version-specific in-game help to confirm the command name and argument format.

Use role commands when an immediate change is needed
The wiki command list and hosting command guide document role-level changes that can be made in-game. The syntax supplied for the area limit is /role [rolename] landclaimmaxareas [value]. Replace [rolename] with the exact role identifier and [value] with the desired maximum.
The commands guide also documents /role [rolename] landclaimminsize for changing a role’s minimum claim size. Because the supplied syntax does not show the dimension arguments, run the command’s built-in help in your installed version before appending values. Do not guess an argument order; a malformed command can leave the old setting unchanged or return an error that looks like a successful console entry.
Use commands for targeted, live adjustments and use serverconfig.json for a controlled configuration change during maintenance. After either method, verify the resulting value rather than assuming the command or file edit applied to the intended role.
Verify the change with a repeatable test
- Check the world switch. Confirm
allowLandClaimingis set to the state you intend. - Check the player’s role. Make sure the test account uses the role whose values you edited.
- Test the minimum boundary. Attempt a cuboid at the configured minimum and one dimension below it. Record which attempt succeeds.
- Test volume behavior. Create a claim with known X, Y and Z dimensions and observe how much allowance remains, if the interface reports it.
- Test area counting. Create non-adjacent test areas until the role reaches its configured maximum, then verify that the next separate area is refused.
- Test after reconnecting. Leave and rejoin with the same role to ensure the result persists beyond the original session.
Perform tests in an area reserved for administration. Remove temporary claims afterward so the test does not consume a player’s allowance or interfere with normal construction.
Troubleshoot common failures
The server will not start after editing JSON
Stop the server, restore the last known-good copy, and reapply one change at a time. Check for a missing comma, mismatched quotation mark, or an accidental edit outside the intended role object. If the host offers a validation message, use it to identify the line before restarting.
Best Value
The file changed but players still cannot claim
Check allowLandClaiming first. A world-level false value overrides otherwise valid role limits. Then confirm that the test player is using the edited role and that the server was restarted after a file-based change.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A player can claim, but the size is rejected
Compare all three dimensions against LandClaimMinSize; a cuboid can fail because of only one axis. Resolve the 5×5×5 versus 6×6×6 documentation conflict by trusting the live configuration and a boundary test for your version.
A player reaches the area limit unexpectedly
Count only non-adjacent areas when comparing behavior with LandClaimMaxAreas. Verify that the account’s role is the one you modified and that an administrator did not change the value through a role command.
A command returns an error
Use the in-game help for the exact Vintage Story version. Role names must match the server’s identifiers, and the minimum-size command may require arguments not shown in abbreviated documentation. Correct the syntax before changing the JSON as a workaround.
Plan roles before publishing a policy
Because allowance, minimum size, and area count are independent, write down the policy for each role before editing. A starter role might emphasize small, contiguous protection; a builder role might need more volume; a staff role may require broader limits for maintenance. These are policy examples, not additional game defaults. The values you choose should be entered only after checking the live file and testing the result.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Policy question | Configuration key | What to decide |
|---|---|---|
| How much total territory can this role reserve? | LandClaimAllowance |

| How small can one protected cuboid be? | LandClaimMinSize |
Set the three-axis floor after verifying the version’s accepted dimensions. |
| How many distant locations may the role protect? | LandClaimMaxAreas |
Balance legitimate outposts against administrative overhead. |
| Should anyone be able to claim in this world? | allowLandClaiming |
Choose the world-wide on/off state independently of roles. |
Maintenance checklist
- Schedule edits while the server is stopped.
- Keep a copy of the previous configuration before changing role values.
- Document the Vintage Story version alongside each change.
- Record which role was edited and whether the change was made in JSON or with a command.
- Restart after file edits and inspect startup output.
- Run the minimum-size, volume, and separate-area tests with a non-production account.
- Tell players whether the allowance is a shared role budget and whether distant areas count separately.
- Recheck the official documentation and in-game help after a game upgrade, because defaults and command syntax can change.
Quick procedure
For a hosted server, stop the process, open server_data > serverconfig.json, edit the desired role’s LandClaimAllowance, LandClaimMinSize, and LandClaimMaxAreas, save, and restart. For an existing world’s global permission, run /worldconfig allowLandClaiming true or /worldconfig allowLandClaiming false. Validate with a test account, and rely on the live configuration plus version-specific help whenever documentation disagrees.
