For realistic manual shifting, match the shifter mode to the car’s simulated gearbox before changing sensitivity settings. Select a car with an H-pattern manual transmission, map every gear the simulator requests, calibrate the clutch in-game, and then decide whether to use a physical clutch or an assistance such as auto clutch. A sequential or paddle-shift car can reject H-pattern commands even when the hardware is working normally.
The exact labels differ by simulator and version, and there is no evidence-based clutch sensitivity or dead-zone percentage that works across games. Calibration should make your pedal’s actual travel register reliably; adjustments are for correcting a specific input problem, not for chasing a universal number.

Start with the car’s gearbox, not the hardware
An H-pattern shifter sends individual gear selections. The selected car must be modeled as an H-pattern manual for those selections to be accepted. iRacing states: “Cars that have a sequential transmission cannot be shifted with an H-Pattern shifter.” That rule explains many apparently broken setups.

Logitech’s support guidance for Assetto Corsa and Assetto Corsa Evo describes the same behavior in those titles: an H-shifter works with a manual car but not with a car configured for paddles or a sequential stick. This is a game- and car-specific compatibility rule, not proof that the shifter has failed.

| Simulated transmission | Expected input | Will an H-pattern gate work? | Clutch implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manual H-pattern | One control for each gear position, including reverse where supported | Yes, when the simulator is set to direct or H-pattern selection | Use a physical clutch if the car requires it, or an available assistance |
| Sequential | Separate upshift and downshift commands | No; use sequential controls or paddles | Often governed by the simulator and vehicle model |
| Paddle-shift | Steering-wheel paddle commands | No; the game may ignore H-pattern positions | Usually handled by the game’s transmission logic |
A fast compatibility test
- Load a known manual car with a conventional H gate.
- Enter a practice session rather than a race.
- With the car stationary, select neutral and move the lever through each gate.
- If the manual test car responds but your original car does not, the original car’s transmission type is the likely explanation.
- If no manual car responds, continue with connection, mapping, and calibration checks.
Do not force an H-pattern profile onto a sequential or paddle-shift vehicle. Create separate profiles or use the input mode that matches the car.
Connect the shifter and account for the platform
Connection method affects how the simulator sees the device. A shifter attached through a wheelbase may appear as part of that base, while a standalone unit can appear as its own controller. Keep the connection consistent when possible. iRacing’s controller instructions note that moving a device to another USB port can require calibration again.
Model-specific connection example
Fanatec documents two connection options for the ClubSport Shifter SQ V1.5: RJ12 connection to compatible Fanatec wheel bases, or standalone USB operation on a PC. Those options are specific to that model and platform. Before buying or moving a shifter, verify the current manufacturer documentation for your exact hardware, wheelbase, operating system, and simulator.
- Use the manufacturer’s specified cable and port.
- Connect the wheelbase and pedals before opening the simulator when the software expects them to be enumerated together.
- If you change USB ports, hubs, wheelbases, or controller order, run the game’s calibration and binding process again.
- On console platforms, confirm that standalone USB devices are supported; PC compatibility does not automatically establish console compatibility.
Map every H-pattern gear
Most simulators treat an H gate as separate gear inputs rather than one abstract “shifter” button. iRacing’s official user guide describes assigning a button, key, or axis for each H-pattern gear. Its controller support material also covers calibrating and assigning separate shifter and pedal controllers.
Binding procedure
- Open the simulator’s Controls, Input, or Controller setup screen.
- Select the H-pattern, direct-selection, or manual-shift mode if the title offers more than one mode.
- Choose the first-gear binding and move the lever fully into first. Release it only after the game records the input.
- Repeat for second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, and any additional forward gears the car or simulator supports.
- Assign reverse separately when the game requests it. Some hardware uses a push-down gate or another switch for reverse, so follow the device’s own procedure.
- Leave neutral unassigned if the simulator detects it automatically, or bind it only when the title explicitly provides a neutral control.
- Save the profile and confirm that each binding is unique. A duplicated input can cause two gears to appear active at once.
Do not assume every car uses the same number or arrangement of gears. A profile that works for a five-speed may not represent a seven-speed or dogleg layout accurately.

Calibrate the clutch pedal in the simulator
Calibration tells the game which raw pedal positions represent released and fully depressed. Use the simulator’s input-calibration screen rather than relying on a hardware position shown by another application. iRacing documents clutch-pedal calibration as part of its controller setup.
Calibration procedure
- Open the game’s pedal or input-calibration page.
- Select the clutch axis, then release the pedal completely when the software asks for its minimum or resting value.
- Press the pedal through its full usable travel when the software records the maximum value.
- Watch the live input indicator while releasing and pressing several times. It should move smoothly and reach both endpoints consistently.
- Save the calibration, then repeat it for the brake and throttle if those devices were also moved or reconnected.
- Return to the control screen and verify that the clutch axis is assigned to the intended pedal, not to a combined or inverted axis.
Recalibrate after changing USB ports, pedal connections, wheelbases, mounting positions, or firmware settings. A previously saved calibration can describe the old device path or travel range and produce an apparent dead zone after the hardware is moved.

The available official material provides procedures and compatibility rules, not one cross-game clutch sensitivity, dead-zone, or bite-point setting. Start with the game’s default calibrated range. Change a dead zone only when the live indicator fails to reach rest or full travel, and change a response curve only when the simulator’s own behavior makes the pedal difficult to control. Record the reason for each adjustment so you can undo it if shifting becomes less reliable.
Choose physical clutch operation or an assistance
A three-pedal set gives you a physical clutch, but a simulator may also provide an aid that operates it for you. iRacing’s user guide documents Auto Clutch for drivers who do not have a clutch pedal or prefer not to use it. Treat that as a deliberate driving-aid choice, not as a universal realism setting.
Using a physical clutch
- Leave the clutch axis assigned and calibrated.
- Depress the pedal as the car’s modeled transmission requires before selecting a gear.
- Release it smoothly after the gear is engaged, then observe whether the car moves away cleanly or stalls.
- If the simulator models bite-point behavior, use the pedal’s travel and the car’s response to refine your technique rather than applying an arbitrary percentage.
Using auto clutch
- Enable the simulator’s clutch assistance in its driving-aids or transmission settings.
- Keep the H-pattern gear bindings intact; auto clutch changes clutch operation, not the gearbox layout.
- Check the title’s rules for online sessions, licenses, or damage models, because assistance settings can affect eligibility or scoring.
- Do not assume another simulator uses the same name or behavior. Some titles provide separate aids for launch, shifting, or blipping.
Understand shift timing and synchromesh behavior
Even a correctly mapped H gate can appear unreliable if the shift sequence is completed too quickly. iRacing’s transmission guidance warns that releasing its synchromesh H-pattern input too soon may leave the car in the current gear or in neutral. Keep the lever in the selected gate until the simulator has registered the shift, then move it to the next position.

A reliable upshift sequence
- Lift or reduce throttle as the car and transmission model require.
- Depress the clutch when using manual clutch operation.
- Move the lever cleanly out of the current gate and into the next gear.
- Hold the lever in that gate momentarily rather than bouncing it back to neutral.
- Release the clutch progressively and reapply throttle.
The exact timing depends on the vehicle and simulator. A dogbox, synchronized road-car gearbox, and sequential racing gearbox can each impose different rules. Use the car’s behavior and the simulator’s documentation as the authority.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Fanatec’s shifter documentation describes several common H-pattern arrangements: a five-speed layout, a seven-speed layout used on selected Porsche 911 variants, and dogleg layouts with first gear placed separately from the usual position. Hardware and games may support assigning individual gears, but the vehicle’s actual pattern must remain the reference.
| Pattern type | What changes | Configuration advice |
|---|---|---|
| Standard five-speed | Reverse and five forward gears follow the familiar road-car gate | Bind each gear exactly as shown by the car’s cockpit or setup description |
| Seven-speed | An additional forward gear extends the gate; selected Porsche 911 variants are an example cited by Fanatec | Confirm that the simulator exposes the seventh gear before creating a binding |
| Dogleg | First gear is positioned separately from the usual first-gear slot | Map the game’s gear labels to the vehicle’s actual positions rather than relying on muscle memory |
If the simulator offers per-car control profiles, save a pattern-specific profile. Otherwise, review the gate before each session, especially when switching between road cars and racing cars.
Test the complete setup before racing
A short practice test catches most configuration errors without risking a race result.
- Select a manual H-pattern car and a flat, low-traffic practice area.
- Confirm that the car starts in neutral and that reverse cannot be selected accidentally.
- With the clutch depressed, select each forward gear in order. Check the gear indicator after every movement.
- Repeat the test while releasing the clutch gradually. Look for a smooth takeoff and a consistent response at the pedal’s calibrated range.
- Perform an upshift and downshift at low speed, holding the lever in each gate long enough for the simulator to register it.
- Test the same profile with the intended race car. If it fails only there, revisit the car’s transmission type and allowed input method.
- Save the verified controller profile before changing another setting.
Troubleshoot by symptom
The shifter works in menus but does nothing on track
Load a confirmed manual H-pattern car. If it works there, the original car is sequential or paddle-shift and will not accept H-gate commands. If it fails in both cars, check that the simulator is in H-pattern mode and that each gear has an individual binding.

Only some gears register
Open the binding screen and move the lever slowly into every gate. Rebind the missing positions, then inspect the live controller display for a gate that never changes. A hardware connection or switch problem is more likely when the game cannot see that position at all.
The car remains in the old gear or neutral
In iRacing, releasing the synchromesh H-pattern input too soon can produce this result. Hold the lever in the destination gate until the shift is recognized, and use the clutch timing required by the car.
The clutch never reaches fully released or fully pressed
Run the game’s clutch calibration again, watching both endpoints. If the issue appeared after moving the controller, reconnect it to the previous port or recalibrate on the new port. Verify that the correct axis is assigned and that it is not inverted.
The car shifts without the clutch
Check whether Auto Clutch or another transmission aid is enabled. Disable the aid when you want manual clutch operation, or leave it enabled when your hardware lacks a clutch pedal and the simulator permits the assistance.

Build a realistic setup by decision, not by percentages
Use these decisions in order:
- Car: Is the selected vehicle H-pattern, sequential, or paddle-shift?
- Input mode: Does the simulator expect individual gear positions or up/down commands?
- Hardware: Is the shifter connected through a compatible wheelbase or as a supported standalone controller?
- Pedals: Does the setup include a clutch axis, and does its calibration reach both endpoints?
- Assistance: Will you operate the clutch physically, or use the simulator’s documented auto-clutch option?
- Validation: Have neutral, reverse, every gear, clutch response, and shift timing been tested in practice?
This order prevents a common mistake: changing sensitivity or buying replacement hardware when the selected car simply uses a transmission that cannot accept H-pattern input.
Simulator-specific cautions
iRacing
iRacing provides separate documentation for controller calibration, transmission behavior, and gear-by-gear assignments. Its transmission guide was marked modified September 21, 2026 in the support listing. Follow the current in-game labels for the installed version, especially when they differ from older documentation.
The iRacing Official User Guide PDF identifies version 20100803.01. It remains useful for the concepts of assigning each H-pattern gear and using Auto Clutch, but its menu wording should not be treated as a guarantee of current screen labels.
Assetto Corsa and Assetto Corsa Evo
Logitech’s support page specifically addresses why an H-shifter can work with one car and appear non-functional with another in these titles. Use a manual car as the diagnostic case, then select the transmission mode and bindings appropriate to the vehicle you actually intend to drive. Do not generalize this page’s behavior to every racing title without checking that title’s own controls documentation.
