For a 4K/2160p, 60 fps YouTube Live stream, YouTube recommends a video bitrate of 50 Mbps for H.264 or 35 Mbps for H.265/HEVC. Set bitrate encoding to CBR and keyframes to every two seconds; do not exceed four seconds. For SDR, use Rec. 709 and 8-bit color. For HDR, YouTube lists H.265 and 10-bit. These are ingest recommendations, not guarantees of stream quality: test your complete setup before going live.
Choose H.264 or H.265 for 4K60
YouTube’s official live-streaming guidance lists a lower recommended ingest bitrate for H.265 than for H.264 at 4K/2160p and 60 fps. Use the codec your encoder supports for the workflow you need; YouTube’s guidance does not establish which codec will look better at the same bitrate or perform better on a particular computer.

| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; maximum 4 seconds | 2 seconds recommended; maximum 4 seconds |
The figures are YouTube’s published ingest guidance; its page does not state a publication or revision year. A listed minimum is not a promise that the connection will reliably sustain 4K60. YouTube advises testing upload bitrate and choosing a quality your connection can maintain. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Set the encoder for SDR or HDR
SDR: H.264 or H.265
For a standard-dynamic-range stream, choose Rec. 709 and 8-bit color, then use the bitrate for your selected codec from the table. YouTube lists both H.264 and H.265 as supported video codecs for live streaming.

HDR: use the H.265 path
YouTube lists H.265 (HEVC) as its HDR video codec and specifies 10-bit depth for HDR. Its guidance says AV1 is not supported for HDR; it recommends H.265 over RTMP(S) for HDR and says HLS can be considered if the encoder does not yet support the relevant capabilities over RTMP. Do not treat H.264 as YouTube’s recommended HDR configuration based on this guidance.

- Protocol: RTMPS when available. YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS as supported and recommends RTMPS.
- Rate control: CBR.
- Keyframes: every 2 seconds; never set the interval above 4 seconds.
- Scan and pixels: progressive scan and square pixel aspect ratio.
- Advanced H.264 guidance: two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC.
- Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3. Its guidance lists 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps for stereo; for 5.1 audio over RTMP/RTMPS, it lists AAC at 48 kHz and 384 Kbps.
These are platform-level recommendations, not settings validated for every encoder or hardware combination. Use the closest available controls in your encoder, and confirm its output and YouTube’s stream-health indicators during a test.
Set up YouTube Live and test before the event
- Prepare the live stream in YouTube Studio. Open the live control room for the planned stream and use its stream key and ingest details in your encoder. Keep the key private; anyone who has it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
- Choose automatic or manual resolution. YouTube recommends automatic resolution and frame-rate detection by default. If you need to select them manually, create a custom stream key and enable manual settings under “Stream Resolution,” then select 2160p and 60 fps if offered.
- Configure the encoder. Select H.264 or H.265, enter the matching 4K60 bitrate from the table, and set CBR and a two-second keyframe interval. Match color settings to SDR or HDR as appropriate.
- Run a full pre-event test. Start the encoder and check the incoming stream in YouTube Studio. Include audio and motion similar to the real event, allow time to observe stability, and verify that resolution, frame rate, audio, and color appear as expected. YouTube Help’s instruction is direct: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Monitor the live control room. Check stream health and read any messages during the event. If YouTube reports instability, reduce the selected quality until the connection can sustain it reliably, then test again.
At 4K/2160p, YouTube does not offer the low-latency optimization option: the stream is set to normal latency and optimized for quality. Plan for that trade-off if audience interaction depends on very low delay.

Common problems and what to check
- Stream health reports an unstable connection: the connection may not sustain the chosen bitrate. Test upload performance and lower the stream quality to a stable setting rather than assuming the listed minimum guarantees reliability.
- YouTube does not receive a picture: confirm that the encoder is sending to the current stream’s ingest details and that the stream key was copied correctly. If you replaced or reset the key, update it in the encoder.
- Resolution or frame rate is not what you selected: check whether YouTube is using automatic detection or whether manual settings are enabled for a custom stream key. Confirm the encoder is actually outputting 2160p at 60 fps.
- HDR is unavailable or appears incorrectly: verify that the encoder supports the required HDR capabilities over the selected protocol, that H.265 and 10-bit are configured, and that the source is actually HDR. YouTube suggests considering HLS if the encoder lacks the relevant RTMP support.
- Audio is missing or unsuitable: check that the encoder is sending a supported codec and that its channel layout and sample rate match the intended stereo or 5.1 configuration.
- 4K viewers report delay: normal latency is expected by YouTube’s 4K guidance; the low-latency optimization is unavailable at 2160p.
Copyright and live-stream eligibility
Technical settings cannot establish that you have the rights to stream the video, music, or other material in your program. Before broadcasting, confirm that you have permission for the content and review YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream rules. A successful encoder test does not guarantee that a stream will remain available or be eligible for monetization.
