How to Configure FFmpeg to Reconnect to YouTube Live from a VPS

Short answer: FFmpeg’s -reconnect options are documented for HTTP connections, not as a switch that makes an RTMP or RTMPS stream reconnect to YouTube Live. For a VPS setup, distinguish a brief network interruption from an FFmpeg process that exits: a supervisor can restart a failed process, but that alone does not guarantee YouTube will accept the stream again. Test recovery with your actual FFmpeg build, VPS network, and YouTube stream configuration.

Why FFmpeg’s reconnect flags do not solve YouTube output recovery

FFmpeg documents reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, reconnect_on_http_error, reconnect_streamed, and related retry limits in its HTTP protocol documentation. These options concern HTTP connections. FFmpeg documents RTMP separately; the HTTP options are not a documented RTMP/RTMPS output-recovery recipe.

This matters when you see examples that add -reconnect 1 to a command publishing to YouTube. If the command’s output is an RTMP or RTMPS URL, do not assume an HTTP reconnect flag will restore that publishing connection. If FFmpeg reads an HTTP input, HTTP reconnect options may apply to that input, but that is different from reconnecting the YouTube output.

Set up the YouTube Live destination and encoder settings

Get the server URL and stream key

In YouTube’s live workflow, get the server URL and stream key from Live Control Room, enter them in your encoder, and start sending from the encoder. Follow YouTube’s current stream setup guidance for the controls available to your account. Treat the stream key as a credential: do not paste it into a public post, example, or shared log.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Choose a supported protocol and encoding configuration

YouTube’s encoder settings guidance lists RTMP and RTMPS and recommends RTMPS. It lists H.264, H.265, and AV1, and recommends constant bitrate (CBR). The recommended keyframe interval is two seconds and must not exceed four seconds. Select settings your installed FFmpeg build supports; the presence of a codec in YouTube’s guidance does not mean it is enabled in every FFmpeg build.

Use the current YouTube guidance for the applicable ingest settings and bitrate rather than relying on a generic command copied from another system. The available sources do not establish one universal FFmpeg command or a universal output-reconnect option for YouTube RTMP/RTMPS.

Plan recovery around the failure you need to handle

Temporary transport interruption while FFmpeg is still running

This is a connection-level failure: FFmpeg remains alive, but the path to YouTube or the publishing connection has been interrupted. The official documentation cited here does not establish that FFmpeg automatically reconnects an RTMP/RTMPS output in this case. Do not treat a running process—or an HTTP input retry—as proof that the YouTube output recovered. Monitor the stream and validate the behavior on your own host and configuration.

FFmpeg exits

A process supervisor or equivalent watchdog can detect that FFmpeg has stopped and start it again. This is an operational approach to process recovery, not a guarantee that YouTube will accept the new publishing attempt. Configure bounded restart pacing so repeated failures do not cause an uncontrolled restart loop, and arrange alerting so an operator knows when recovery is not succeeding.

The official protocol and YouTube setup guidance do not provide a universal supervisor unit or shell command for end-to-end FFmpeg RTMP recovery. Treat a supervisor configuration as host-specific: verify its restart behavior, permissions, environment, log handling, and access to the stream key on your VPS.

Validate the recovery path before depending on it

  1. Record the exact setup. Note the FFmpeg version and build, VPS operating system, input and output protocols, encoder settings, and how the stream key is supplied. Keep the key out of shared records.
  2. Check normal publishing first. Confirm that the server URL, key, protocol, and encoder settings are accepted by YouTube before testing failure recovery.
  3. Test process failure separately. Stop or terminate FFmpeg in a controlled test and confirm that your supervisor detects the exit, waits according to its configured pacing, and starts the process again.
  4. Test transport interruption separately. In a controlled window, test how your setup behaves when the publishing connection is interrupted but FFmpeg remains running. Observe both FFmpeg logs and the YouTube stream state; do not infer output reconnection from the process staying alive.
  5. Check the result and alerting. Confirm whether YouTube resumes receiving the stream, how long recovery takes in your test, and whether an alert fires if it does not recover. Repeat after changing the FFmpeg build, host, or stream configuration.

Troubleshoot common reconnect failures

Symptom Likely issue What to check
-reconnect appears to have no effect on YouTube publishing The option is an HTTP connection control, not a documented RTMP/RTMPS output reconnect switch. Check whether the option applies to an HTTP input. Handle output recovery as a separate connection or process-supervision problem.
FFmpeg exits and the stream stops No watchdog is restarting the failed process, or the supervisor cannot run it successfully. Check supervisor status and logs, restart pacing, permissions, environment variables, and whether the restarted command can access its input and key.
The process restarts but YouTube does not resume receiving A process restart does not guarantee the destination will accept the new connection. Check the Live Control Room stream state, server URL and key, protocol, encoder settings, and FFmpeg logs. Validate the complete recovery path on the target host.
A command works on one machine but fails on the VPS The FFmpeg build, codec support, runtime environment, or network path may differ. Verify the deployed build and its available codecs, then test the actual VPS network and configuration rather than relying on a command tested elsewhere.
