How to Configure FFmpeg Timestamps for a YouTube Gaming Replay Stream

For a typical live gaming stream, leave FFmpeg’s timestamp handling at its defaults unless the source has a timeline you specifically need to preserve. Use -copyts only when retaining the input timestamps matters; add -start_at_zero with it if the output should keep relative timing but begin at zero. Neither option enables YouTube replay or guarantees identical output timestamps.

“Replay” can mean rewind during the live broadcast (YouTube DVR) or a recording available afterward (the archive). Those are separate YouTube features: configure DVR in YouTube Studio, and keep a local recording if the archive matters.

Choose timestamp options for the timeline you need

FFmpeg’s timestamp flags address the media timeline; they do not turn on YouTube DVR or ensure that YouTube saves an archive. Start by deciding whether the input’s existing timestamps are meaningful to your use case.

Goal Configuration to consider When it fits
Use normal live-transcode timing Leave -copyts off A regular live gaming feed where unusual source offsets do not need to be retained.
Retain the input timestamp values -copyts The source timeline matters and you have a reason to preserve its timestamp values.
Retain relative timing but begin output at zero -copyts -start_at_zero You need the input timeline’s relative offsets while shifting its start to zero.
Address non-monotonic timestamps in variable-frame-rate stream copy Test -copytb 1 Video is being stream-copied, is variable frame rate, and timestamp issues appear. This is a targeted option to test, not a general live-stream setting.

FFmpeg cautions that -copyts does not ensure output timestamps are identical to the input: frame synchronization and muxer processing can still change them. The options should therefore be selected for the intended timeline and checked in the resulting output, not treated as a guarantee. See the FFmpeg documentation for the installed version’s option behavior.

Apply the flags only when they match the source

Preserve timestamps and shift the start to zero

If you need the input timeline’s relative timing but want the output to begin at zero, place -copyts and -start_at_zero in the appropriate global-option position for your installed FFmpeg version. A schematic command looks like this:

ffmpeg -copyts -start_at_zero -i input.mkv [your video and audio options] [output]

This is a pattern, not a complete YouTube command: the input, encoding settings, output format, and delivery method depend on your source and setup. Do not add the flags merely because you want viewers to rewind.

Test demuxer timebase for variable-frame-rate stream copy

When stream-copying variable-frame-rate video and encountering non-monotonic timestamps, FFmpeg documents -copytb 1 as selecting the demuxer timebase, which may avoid the issue. Test it against the actual source and inspect packet or frame timing. It is not a universal fix for re-encoding or for every timestamp warning.

Set YouTube ingest separately from FFmpeg timestamps

YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS delivery, H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Bitrate recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use YouTube’s current table rather than applying one bitrate to every gaming stream. YouTube says it transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and networks.

Use RTMPS when you want encrypted delivery; YouTube defines it as RTMP over TLS/SSL and recommends it. Get the stream URL and stream key from your channel’s Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password: keep it private and never place a real key in a published command or screenshot. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and streaming with an encoder guidance for the current settings and workflow.

Know whether you need DVR or an archive

Live rewind: enable DVR in YouTube Studio

DVR lets viewers pause, rewind, and resume while the broadcast is still live. Enable or disable it in YouTube Studio’s live stream settings; FFmpeg timestamp flags do not control it. Viewers cannot seek to a point before the stream began, and YouTube says rewind may be limited or unavailable for very long streams. Turning DVR off removes seeking during the live broadcast, but does not by itself prevent viewers from watching a recording afterward. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.

After the stream: protect the recording

YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. That is not a guarantee for streams below the threshold, nor can an FFmpeg timestamp flag guarantee the platform archive. If the replay is important, record locally as well and check that the file is growing and playable. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup; see its archive live streams guidance.

Validate the timeline and the live session

  1. Record the setup: save the exact FFmpeg command, the output of ffmpeg -version, the input details, and whether the video is being encoded or stream-copied.
  2. Probe input and output: compare stream start times and packet or frame PTS/DTS. Look for missing timestamps, discontinuities, and non-monotonic values. Use the results to decide whether preserving timestamps or testing a different timebase is relevant.
  3. Run a representative private test: use motion and audio like the actual gaming session. Check YouTube Live Control Room preview and stream health, and confirm the local recording is growing and playable.
  4. Check the playback behavior you want: test DVR during the live event, then verify the available recording after the stream ends. These are separate outcomes.

YouTube recommends testing before a public session and checking preview and stream health. This diagnostic sequence is practical guidance for isolating timestamp behavior; results depend on the source, FFmpeg build, command, and YouTube ingest status.

Troubleshoot common timestamp and replay problems

Symptom Likely distinction to check Next step
Viewers cannot rewind the live broadcast DVR is a YouTube setting, not an FFmpeg timestamp option. Check the DVR setting in YouTube Studio. Remember viewers cannot seek before the broadcast began, and long streams can have DVR limitations.
The stream is live, but no replay appears afterward The archive is separate from DVR, and streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Check the stream duration and archive status. For future sessions, keep a local recording rather than relying solely on YouTube’s archive.
FFmpeg reports non-monotonic timestamps during VFR stream copy The issue may relate to the demuxer timebase. Test -copytb 1 on the actual source, then inspect packet or frame timing. Do not assume it applies to a re-encoded stream.
Output timestamps differ after adding -copyts Frame synchronization or muxer processing can still alter timestamps. Compare input and output PTS/DTS and start times; confirm whether exact values or only relative timing are required.
YouTube ingest fails or stream health is poor Timestamp flags do not replace correct ingest protocol, codec, keyframe interval, bitrate, or stream-key setup. Check Live Control Room health and preview, confirm settings against YouTube’s current encoder table, and verify the stream key is current and private.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is a continuous YouTube replay stream rather than configuring a local FFmpeg process, StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos or playlists. Upload your recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay running at home; uploads stream as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is YouTube-only and plays uploaded video, not a live camera feed. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
