You can run a 24/7 Gurbani YouTube stream from Ubuntu by sending a prepared audio/video source to YouTube Live with FFmpeg, then using a supervisor such as systemd to relaunch FFmpeg if it exits. You still need a stable, always-on Ubuntu machine and internet connection, a valid YouTube stream key, media you are authorized to broadcast, and monitoring: automatic process restarts do not prevent every interruption.
What you need before configuring FFmpeg
- An Ubuntu computer or server that can stay on, with a reliable internet connection and enough upload capacity for your chosen bitrate.
- A prepared local video, or a planned playlist and separate audio/video inputs. The commands below assume one combined audio/video file; separate feeds need a different FFmpeg input setup.
- A YouTube channel with access to create a live stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Account eligibility and activation timing can vary; check the current Control Room rather than assuming every channel can go live immediately.
- Permission to use every recording, arrangement, performance, and visual asset in the broadcast. Owning or finding a Gurbani recording online does not itself establish permission to rebroadcast it.
This procedure is for prepared media, not a camera feed. A 24/7 setup is a continuously running publishing process, not a guarantee of uninterrupted YouTube availability.

Install FFmpeg on the Ubuntu release you are using
FFmpeg is available from Ubuntu’s package archive, but the package version depends on the Ubuntu release and repository updates. Ubuntu Packages listed ffmpeg version 7:6.1.1-3ubuntu5 in universe for Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (Noble); do not assume that version applies to another release. See Ubuntu Packages for Noble’s FFmpeg package.
- Identify your release:
lsb_release -dsorcat /etc/os-release. - Refresh package metadata and install FFmpeg from the repositories configured for that release:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install ffmpeg - Verify the installation and build details:
ffmpeg -version - If a later command reports an unknown encoder or protocol, inspect the installed build with
ffmpeg -encodersandffmpeg -protocols. Build options vary, so do not assume a codec or protocol is present just because FFmpeg is installed.
Ubuntu’s package listing is release-specific. For command behavior, use the manual and FFmpeg documentation appropriate to the installed version; the older Ubuntu FFmpeg manual is not a substitute for checking the target system. The FFmpeg Protocols Documentation describes RTMP-family publishing, including the RTMPS protocol variant.

Choose a YouTube-compatible output profile
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), a recommended two-second keyframe interval with a four-second maximum, and AAC or MP3 audio. For a straightforward, widely supported starting point, the examples here use H.264 video and AAC audio. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions before relying on a profile.

These figures are YouTube’s published H.264 guidance for the stated resolution and frame rate, not a guarantee of stable delivery. The minimum is not a prudent 24/7 target when the connection fluctuates. Leave upload headroom for other traffic and variation, and choose a profile your source, machine, and network can sustain. Upscaling a lower-quality source does not restore detail.
Create the live stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the broadcast.
- In the stream settings, copy the current ingest URL and stream key. YouTube describes RTMPS as its secure streaming option; use the RTMPS ingest URL shown for your stream where available. YouTube’s RTMPS instructions explain the URL/key workflow, and Google’s RTMPS developer guide describes RTMPS as RTMP over an SSL connection.
- Treat the key like a password. Do not publish it in a script, repository, screenshot, support post, or article. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Live Control Room and update the service configuration.
The exact interface labels can change. Always use the URL and key currently displayed for the broadcast, not a copied endpoint from an old tutorial.

Test a single local video with FFmpeg
First verify that the source plays locally and contains the expected picture and audio. Then run FFmpeg interactively before creating a background service. Replace /path/to/gurbani.mp4, YOUR_RTMPS_INGEST_URL, and YOUR_STREAM_KEY with your own values. The placeholders are not a real endpoint or key.

It asks FFmpeg to read at real-time pace (-re), loop the input indefinitely (-stream_loop -1), encode video at a fixed target and maximum bitrate, and set a 60-frame GOP at 30 fps (a two-second keyframe interval). It does not force the input to 720p: the output dimensions follow the input unless you add a scaling filter. If the source is not 30 fps, confirm the output behavior you want before using the command continuously.
For 1080p30 H.264, YouTube’s listed recommendation is 10 Mbps. Change each video bitrate value in -b:v, -maxrate, and -bufsize deliberately; verify that the source and upload can sustain the result. For another resolution, frame rate, codec, or separate audio/video feeds, adapt the command to that media and compare it with YouTube’s current settings. Do not use H.264-specific bitrate figures as recommendations for a different codec.

Embedding a stream key directly in a command can expose it through shell history or process listings. For a quick private test, avoid shared machines and remove the command from shell history where appropriate. For ongoing operation, place the full publishing URL in a root-readable environment file and reference it from the service instead. For example:
sudo install -m 600 /dev/null /etc/gurbani-stream.env
sudoedit /etc/gurbani-stream.envPut a line such as STREAM_URL='rtmps://CURRENT_INGEST_URL/CURRENT_STREAM_KEY' in that file, using the exact RTMPS URL and key from YouTube. Keep the file out of version control and restrict access to it.
Run the tested command under systemd
Once the interactive test is visible in YouTube’s preview and the audio and video are correct, use systemd to keep the FFmpeg process running and restart it after an unexpected exit. This example assumes the source is at /srv/gurbani/gurbani.mp4, FFmpeg is at /usr/bin/ffmpeg, and the protected environment file above exists. Change paths to match your system.

- Create a dedicated service definition:
sudoedit /etc/systemd/system/gurbani-stream.service - Use a unit like this:

sudo systemctl status gurbani-stream.service - Review recent FFmpeg output and service messages:
sudo journalctl -u gurbani-stream.service -n 100 --no-pager
To follow new messages, usesudo journalctl -u gurbani-stream.service -f.
Because the service definition and quoting behavior can be sensitive to local systemd and FFmpeg versions, validate the unit and check its journal before treating it as dependable. If the URL expansion or command fails, inspect the unit, environment file permissions and contents, and FFmpeg’s error output; do not solve a key problem by making the secret public. The systemd example is an operational pattern, not an official YouTube prescription. FFmpeg’s RTMP publishing syntax is documented in its protocol reference.

YouTube recommends testing before a live event, using representative audio and motion, monitoring stream health, and reviewing messages while streaming. Before leaving the service unattended, check each item:

- Confirm that the installed FFmpeg build includes the required encoder and protocol, and that a short test reaches the YouTube preview.
- Check YouTube’s stream-health panel and ensure the bitrate and format match the chosen output.
- Listen for audio gaps, clipping, or sync drift; check image motion and resolution.
- Confirm the host’s upload capacity has headroom and is not being saturated by other traffic.
- Stop the FFmpeg process deliberately and verify that systemd starts it again; then confirm YouTube accepts the reconnection and the stream resumes as expected.
- Review service logs after the recovery test, and ensure the key is not present in logs, scripts stored in public locations, or shell history.
A process supervisor can restart FFmpeg, but it cannot repair a missing file, an invalid or revoked key, a host outage, a broken network, or a YouTube-side interruption. A restart can also create a gap or a new ingest session. Continue to monitor the service and YouTube health rather than interpreting an active systemd status as proof that viewers are receiving a healthy stream.

Troubleshoot common failures

Copyright, reused content, and channel responsibilities
FFmpeg only transports and encodes media; it does not grant rights to stream it or establish that a channel’s content complies with YouTube policies. Confirm that you have permission for the specific recording, arrangement, performance, artwork, and any other included material. YouTube’s technical encoder guidance does not settle copyright ownership, monetization eligibility, reused-content review, or live-stream access for a particular channel. Check current YouTube policy and the channel’s Live Control Room for those separate requirements.
