You can run a continuous YouTube lofi stream from Ubuntu by looping a prepared audio-and-video file with FFmpeg and sending it to the ingest URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. The settings are not India-specific: choose resolution and bitrate for the upload connection you can actually sustain, then test the full setup and monitor YouTube’s stream health.
What you need before configuring FFmpeg
- An Ubuntu machine or hosted Ubuntu server that can stay online, with enough storage for locally stored media.
- A stable upload connection with headroom beyond the stream’s target bitrate. Test it under representative conditions; no single bitrate or machine is guaranteed to work for every India-based connection.
- A prepared video file with both the visual and lofi audio, ideally a long-form loop with a clean, seamless endpoint. If you want to stream a still image and a separate music playlist, render them together first or build and test a carefully synchronized pipeline.
- Permission to use every audio and visual element in a public livestream and, if intended, monetization. Keep records of licenses and other rights grants.
Install FFmpeg using your chosen Ubuntu package source or another maintained distribution method. Check the installed build and available encoders before relying on a command:

The example below uses libx264; it will not work if that encoder is absent from your FFmpeg build. FFmpeg documents its native AAC encoder, but external-library encoder availability depends on how the installed build was configured. See the FFmpeg documentation.

Use the actual video’s dimensions and motion, the desired frame rate, the host’s encoding capacity, and a representative upload test to choose settings. A mostly static lofi visual may not need 1080p if a lower resolution gives the connection more resilience. YouTube’s current encoder guidance, checked October 3, 2026, lists these H.264 video bitrate figures:

YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval, constant bitrate (CBR), RTMP or RTMPS, AAC or MP3 audio, and 44.1 kHz stereo audio. Its audio guidance lists 128 Kbps for stereo. These are platform recommendations, not a measurement of your connection. Check YouTube’s encoder settings guidance for the current table and protocol details.
For 1080p30, the command’s -g 60 sets a 60-frame GOP, equivalent to two seconds at 30 fps. If you change the frame rate, adjust the GOP so the keyframe interval remains two seconds. Do not choose a target bitrate solely from a speed-test peak: the upload must remain dependable during the broadcast.
Create the YouTube Live destination
- In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live, then create or select the stream.
- Copy the server or ingest URL and stream key shown for that stream. Use the exact protocol and URL Studio supplies.
- Keep the stream key private. Do not place it in public scripts, logs, screenshots, or source control. Store it in a root-readable configuration or environment file, or use a suitable systemd credential mechanism.
YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes the stream-key workflow and checking the Live Control Room preview. Never reuse a key copied from an example or article.

Loop a prepared file with FFmpeg
For a single file containing both audio and video, this template loops the input and sends an H.264/AAC stream to YouTube. Replace the destination with the exact ingest URL and key from Studio; the text shown is deliberately not a working destination.

-rereads the file at its native pace instead of sending it as fast as possible.-stream_loop -1repeats the input indefinitely. The 5 Mbps video target matches YouTube’s currently listed H.264 minimum for 1080p30, not its recommended 14 Mbps figure. Move toward the recommended value only if both the uplink and host can sustain it; otherwise choose a lower resolution and its corresponding current bitrate guidance. The template assumes the input already has audio and video. Test the exact file and command with your installed FFmpeg version before leaving it unattended.

Make the stream unattended and verify it remotely
Run FFmpeg under a systemd service so it starts after networking is available, runs as a dedicated unprivileged user, and restarts after a process exit with a sensible delay. Ensure that user can read the media and protected credentials. Follow local output with:

A restart policy can recover from some local encoder failures, but it cannot prove YouTube is receiving healthy media. Check the Live Control Room after the first start and after any restart, and arrange a monitoring or alert routine that checks both local FFmpeg activity and the remote stream. YouTube recommends testing with audio and video movement representative of the real broadcast and monitoring stream health.
- Start with a test using the same visual motion and audio characteristics as the intended stream.
- Confirm the Live Control Room preview, audio, aspect ratio, frame rate, bitrate, and stream-health messages.
- Test a process restart and a network interruption. Check that the remote stream actually recovers rather than assuming the local process restarting is sufficient.
- Leave the setup running only after the end-to-end test succeeds. Check the health status again after a restart or configuration change.
Account for YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube’s encoder setup help page says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume one uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast will be saved as a single automatically archived video. Confirm the current Live Control Room behavior and decide how to handle the live session and any recordings you want to retain.

Protect music rights and understand monetization separately
Having permission to use a track does not guarantee that a channel or livestream will qualify for monetization. YouTube considers copyright enforcement and reused-content review separately, and its monetization policy identifies collections of songs from different artists as an example that may be ineligible even when the creator has permission. Prefer original or appropriately licensed music and visuals, retain rights records, and review YouTube’s channel monetization policies.
YouTube’s Partner Program eligibility page lists requirements including policy compliance, availability in the creator’s country or region, no active Community Guidelines strikes, two-step verification, advanced features access, and a linked AdSense for YouTube account. The thresholds listed on the page checked October 3, 2026 are 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the last 12 months, or 1,000 subscribers plus 10 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days; applying does not guarantee acceptance because YouTube reviews channels. These rules can change, so check the current Partner Program eligibility page.

Neither deployment is universally superior. Compare the likely power and network continuity, storage needs, administrative access, and total ongoing cost for your situation.
Common problems and fixes
- YouTube does not show a preview: verify that the exact ingest URL and stream key from the selected Studio stream are used, that the destination protocol is correct, and that the FFmpeg process is running. Check FFmpeg output and the Live Control Room rather than relying on a successful local process alone.
- Encoder error mentioning
libx264: inspectffmpeg -encoders. The installed build may not include that external-library encoder; use a build that provides it or adapt the command to an available encoder and validate the output against YouTube’s current requirements. - Connection or stream-health warnings: compare actual sustained upload capacity with the selected bitrate, including audio and any network variation. Reduce resolution and use the applicable bitrate guidance if the connection cannot sustain the target.
- Audio is missing or the file fails to loop as expected: the template expects a single input containing both audio and video. Check the file’s streams and test loop boundaries. For a still image and separate playlist, render a combined file or verify synchronization and transitions in a dedicated pipeline.
- FFmpeg restarts but the stream remains unhealthy: inspect
journalctlfor local errors, then check the Live Control Room. A local restart does not establish that remote ingest recovered. - The 24-hour stream has no single archived replay: account for YouTube’s under-12-hour automatic archive behavior when planning sessions and recordings.
