How to Configure FFmpeg Audio Bitrate for a YouTube Radio Livestream

For a typical stereo YouTube radio livestream, set FFmpeg to AAC at 128 kbps, 44.1 kHz, and two channels: -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2. Put these output options before the output URL, then test the stream and check YouTube’s stream-health diagnostics before relying on it.

Set the audio options for a stereo radio stream

Use these FFmpeg output options for a standard stereo program:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
  • -c:a aac selects AAC audio encoding.
  • -b:a 128k sets the audio bitrate target to 128,000 bits per second. FFmpeg documents b as a bitrate in bits per second; specifying it activates constant-bitrate mode for FFmpeg’s native AAC encoder.
  • -ar 44100 sets the audio sample rate to 44.1 kHz.
  • -ac 2 requests two audio channels: stereo.

YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS audio and recommends CBR. For stereo, it specifies 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. These settings are an output target, not proof that YouTube has accepted the stream or that every audio segment will consume exactly 128 kbps.

Place the options in an FFmpeg command

This is a command structure example, not a tested command. Replace INPUT and the ingest URL with values for your source and YouTube Live setup:

The audio options belong among the output options before the output URL. The example includes a video encoder because a YouTube radio livestream still needs a video component; choose video settings and an ingest configuration appropriate to your actual source and YouTube setup. Do not publish or expose your stream key.

Choose stereo or 5.1 based on the program

YouTube’s published live encoder guidance distinguishes ordinary stereo from 5.1 surround sound. Use the layout that matches the program being produced and delivered, not simply the larger bitrate.

The 384 kbps figure is for 5.1, not a higher-quality default for stereo radio. YouTube Help’s page, “Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions,” does not state a publication year.

Verify the encoded audio and test the ingest

  1. Check FFmpeg’s output information and confirm that the audio stream is AAC with a 44.1 kHz sample rate and two channels.
  2. Run a YouTube test stream with representative audio before using the configuration for a continuous broadcast. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the stream.
  3. Check YouTube Live Control Room or the Live API health messages. If a diagnostic reports a bitrate, codec, sample-rate, or channel-count problem, use that specific message to identify which output setting to review.

Fix common audio-setting mismatches

  • YouTube reports the wrong audio bitrate: confirm -b:a 128k is applied to the output audio stream and appears before the output URL. Do not mistake the video bitrate option -b:v for an audio setting.
  • The audio codec is unsupported or unexpected: confirm the output uses -c:a aac. YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists AAC and MP3 as supported audio codecs.
  • YouTube reports a sample-rate or channel-count mismatch: verify -ar 44100 -ac 2 for stereo, and check the encoded stream information rather than relying only on the command text.
  • A stereo stream was configured at 384 kbps: that is YouTube’s listed 5.1 audio bitrate. For ordinary stereo, use the 128 kbps recommendation.
  • The stream still has an ingest or video problem: these audio options do not by themselves validate the video component, stream key, or overall ingest configuration. Review YouTube’s stream-health messages and the corresponding part of the setup.

Keep a pre-recorded radio stream running without a local encoder

If the goal is to keep uploaded recordings playing continuously on YouTube rather than to encode a live microphone or other real-time source, StreamNeo is a cloud option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; the cloud loops the uploaded video, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only.
