How to Configure Controller, Resolution, and Graphics Settings for Lost Odyssey Recomp on PC

The practical PC configuration route for Lost Odyssey is the community project Lost Odyssey Recomp, not an official Microsoft PC release. Open its in-game Settings menu to remap a controller or keyboard, choose a display mode and aspect ratio, select a monitor or GPU, and tune image quality, upscaling, anti-aliasing, and frame rate. Windows users can also launch LostOdysseyRecomp.exe --setup to configure the game before it starts.

This guide separates documented options from personal preference. The project documentation lists the available controls and graphics features, but it does not publish hardware-specific benchmarks or a universally “best” preset. Start with your display’s native shape and a frame rate your computer can sustain, then adjust visual effects one at a time.

What this guide covers

Lost Odyssey Recomp is the documented community route for playing Lost Odyssey on a computer. Its project documentation describes builds for Windows, Linux, macOS, and Android. The instructions below apply to that project and its settings menus.

Do not confuse Recomp with Microsoft’s separate Xbox backward-compatibility PC program. Xbox Wire’s July 2026 announcement named BLiNX: The Time Sweeper, Conker: Live and Reloaded, Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge, and Fuzion Frenzy as its initial four games; Lost Odyssey was not in that list. Features described for that program, such as its resolution scaling, should not be treated as settings for Recomp.

Logitech G F310 Wired Gamepad Controller Console - Blue/Black | Console-like layout, 4-switch D-pad
  • With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
  • Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
  • A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
  • The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
  • The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.

The menu names below come from the project’s installation and README documentation. A future build can change labels, so use the nearest equivalent if your version presents a slightly different layout.

Open the settings before you play

From the title menu

  1. Start Recomp and wait for the title screen.
  2. Press Y on a controller, or press S on the keyboard.
  3. Choose the category you want to change, then confirm the new value.

This is the quickest route when you have already launched the game and want to change an input, display, or graphics option.

From the camp menu

  1. Open the camp menu during play.
  2. Choose System.
  3. Select Settings.

Use this path when you are already in a save and do not want to return to the title screen.

Windows pre-launch setup

On Windows, run LostOdysseyRecomp.exe --setup. This opens a setup page before the game starts, which is useful if a full-screen choice, monitor selection, or renderer setting prevents you from reaching the title menu.

Configure a controller or keyboard

Remap any binding

  1. Open Settings → Gameplay → Controls.
  2. Select the action or binding you want to change.
  3. Press A on the controller or Enter on the keyboard to begin assigning it.
  4. Press the controller button or keyboard key you want to use.
  5. Move to the next action and repeat, then leave the menu after checking the new layout.

The Controls page also exposes button prompts and vibration strength. If an action feels wrong, change the binding there rather than relying on a controller’s operating-system remap.

Use controller and keyboard together

Player one can use controller and keyboard input together. You do not need a particular controller model to follow the documented setup, and the documentation does not identify a required or specifically tested model. A controller is therefore optional: keyboard play is supported, while a controller can be added for analog movement or a more console-like layout.

8Bitdo Ultimate 2C Wireless Controller for Windows PC and Android, with 1000 Hz Polling Rate, Hall Effect Joysticks and Triggers, and Remappable L4/R4 Bumpers (Green)
  • Compatible with Windows and Android.
  • 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
  • Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
  • Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
  • Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.

When both devices are connected, press the device whose prompt you want to see while testing a binding. If the game displays the wrong prompt, revisit the Controls page and verify the action was assigned to the intended device. Test movement, camera or navigation, confirmation, cancellation, and any frequently used combat commands before starting a long session.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose vibration strength

Vibration is adjustable from the Controls page. Begin at a moderate level, then lower it if long sessions become tiring or raise it only if feedback is difficult to notice. If no vibration is felt, confirm that the controller is detected by the operating system and that the game’s vibration setting is not disabled; the documented menu does not promise that every controller supports rumble.

Keyboard setup considerations

The README lists default keyboard bindings and allows them to be changed. Keep related actions near one another, avoid assigning two essential actions to the same key, and leave a few minutes to test the new layout in a safe area. If you need to restore a familiar arrangement, record your preferred bindings before experimenting so you can recreate them consistently.

Choose display mode, monitor, GPU, and aspect ratio

Windowed or fullscreen

The installation guide documents both Windowed and Fullscreen display modes. Fullscreen dedicates the selected display to the game; Windowed keeps the desktop visible and is useful for multitasking or diagnosing a display problem. Pick the mode that matches how you use the computer rather than assuming one is faster.

Select the display and GPU

On a multi-monitor or multi-GPU computer, the display settings can select which monitor and GPU the game uses. After changing the GPU, restart the game for the choice to take effect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When you change displays, Recomp asks whether to keep the new choice. Respond to the confirmation prompt within five seconds. If you do not respond, the game reverts to the previous display, which prevents an accidental switch to a screen you cannot see.

Set the aspect ratio

The display page offers Auto, 16:9, 21:9, and 4:3:

Option What it does When to choose it
Auto Fills the window. Use it when filling the available window is more important than preserving a fixed shape.
16:9 Preserves a 16:9 image shape and adds black bars when the display has a different shape. Use it for a conventional widescreen monitor or television.
21:9 Preserves a 21:9 image shape and adds black bars when the display has a different shape. Use it on an ultrawide display when you want the game to retain that proportion.
4:3 Preserves a 4:3 image shape and adds black bars when the display has a different shape. Use it for a 4:3 display or for a deliberately narrower presentation.

Start with the ratio that matches your panel. On a 16:9 screen, 16:9 normally avoids unnecessary bars; on an ultrawide screen, 21:9 preserves the intended wider shape without stretching a 16:9 image. Choose Auto only when its fill behavior is preferable to fixed-ratio bars.

What to do when the picture looks stretched

  1. Open the display settings and check the selected aspect ratio.
  2. Choose the ratio that matches the shape you want to preserve rather than leaving a mismatched fixed value.
  3. Apply the change and inspect circles, character proportions, and interface panels.
  4. If you changed the monitor or GPU, restart as requested and confirm the display switch within five seconds.

Black bars under a fixed ratio are intentional: they preserve the selected shape when the monitor has a different shape. They are not automatically a sign that the resolution is wrong.

Set resolution and image quality

Begin with the display’s native output and the aspect ratio you selected. The available documentation establishes the controls below, but it does not provide independent tests showing which combination is fastest on a particular graphics card. Treat the choices as a tuning menu, not as a guaranteed performance ranking.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

High-dynamic-range and brightness controls

The README lists HDR and brightness/gamma controls. Enable HDR only when your display and operating-system HDR mode are configured for it; otherwise, adjust brightness or gamma until dark areas remain visible without washing out highlights. Make changes while looking at both a dark scene and a bright interface so that a setting that fixes one does not make the other unreadable.

Anti-aliasing choices

Recomp lists FXAA, SMAA, and TAA anti-aliasing. These filters reduce jagged edges in different ways. If fine detail appears soft, try a different filter before lowering the output resolution. If shimmering or stair-step edges are distracting, compare the three options at the same resolution and frame-rate target.

Upscaling

Supported configurations can expose DLSS, FSR, or XeSS upscaling. These options render internally at a lower resolution and reconstruct the image for the selected output, but support depends on the hardware and renderer. If one option is unavailable, use another listed option or native resolution; do not assume that every PC can use all three.

Other graphics controls

The documented graphics menu includes shadow resolution, ambient occlusion, anisotropic filtering, depth of field, and bloom. Their visual effect depends on the scene and your display. A sensible tuning order is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Choose the output resolution and aspect ratio.
  2. Select an anti-aliasing method or a supported upscaler.
  3. Set the frame-rate target and verify that it remains stable during ordinary play.
  4. Adjust shadow resolution and ambient occlusion if you need to trade visual detail for headroom.
  5. Set anisotropic filtering, depth of field, and bloom according to clarity and style preferences.

Change one or two settings at a time. That makes it clear which option caused a visual change or a performance problem, and it avoids mistaking a shader-compilation pause for a permanent frame-rate limit.

Frame-rate and synchronization options

Frame-rate choices are 30, 60, 90, and 120 FPS. VSync and compatible variable-refresh-rate support are also documented. Select the highest target your computer can sustain consistently rather than choosing a number your system reaches only in quiet scenes.

Priority Starting choice Adjustment path
Consistency on modest hardware 30 or 60 FPS with VSync. If the target is not sustained, lower demanding effects or use a supported upscaler before reducing the output shape.
Standard high-refresh play 60 or 90 FPS. Compare stability during normal gameplay; move to the higher target only if frame pacing remains even.
High-refresh display 120 FPS, if the hardware and display can sustain it. If frames fluctuate, choose 90 or 60 rather than keeping an unstable cap.
Variable-refresh display Compatible variable refresh rate. Use it when the display and system support it; otherwise use VSync.

These are starting points, not benchmark claims. The project documentation lists the modes but does not establish which one a given GPU will maintain.

Understand first-launch shader preparation

On the first launch with a renderer, the installation process prepares shaders. Recomp lets you download precompiled shaders or skip that download and compile them locally. The first startup can therefore take longer than later starts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After shaders are compiled, subsequent launches reuse them. An update that changes shaders can trigger preparation again. If the game appears to pause during its first start or after an update, allow the preparation process to finish before diagnosing it as a crash. If you skipped precompiled shaders, local compilation is the expected alternative.

Practical starting profiles

The following profiles combine the documented controls without claiming a tested hardware result. Use them as decision points, then adjust to your own display and comfort.

Situation Input Display Graphics approach
Living-room or console-style setup Controller with vibration set to a comfortable level. Fullscreen, the panel’s native aspect ratio, and the correct monitor selected. Start at 60 FPS, use VSync or compatible variable refresh, then compare anti-aliasing options.
Ultrawide monitor Controller or keyboard; keep both available if you switch often. 21:9 to preserve the ultrawide shape, accepting bars only if the panel does not match it. Use the native output first; try a supported upscaler if you need more frame-rate headroom.
Older or constrained PC Keyboard is supported, so no controller purchase is required. Windowed or fullscreen according to stability and convenience; select the active GPU explicitly on a hybrid system. Begin at 30 or 60 FPS, then reduce shadow resolution or ambient occlusion and test again.
High-refresh gaming monitor Whichever device gives the most reliable input prompts. Fullscreen on the intended monitor. Try 90 or 120 FPS only after confirming the system can sustain the target; use variable refresh when compatible.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The game opens on the wrong monitor

  1. Open Settings or run the Windows --setup command before launching.
  2. Select the intended display.
  3. Accept the confirmation prompt within five seconds.
  4. Restart if you changed the GPU, because the GPU selection takes effect after a restart.

The image is stretched or has unexpected bars

Check whether Auto is filling the window or whether a fixed 16:9, 21:9, or 4:3 ratio is active. A fixed ratio deliberately adds black bars when the monitor shape differs. Pick the ratio you want to preserve, apply it, and confirm the result on character models and circular UI elements.

A controller does not respond

  1. Open Settings → Gameplay → Controls.
  2. Select the action and press A or Enter to assign it again.
  3. Press the desired controller button while the assignment is waiting.
  4. Test the binding and check vibration strength separately.
  5. If the controller remains unusable, use the documented keyboard bindings instead; no specific controller model is required by the setup instructions.

The first launch seems unusually slow

Shader preparation is expected on the first launch with a renderer. Download precompiled shaders when offered, or let the game compile them locally. Later launches reuse the result unless an update changes the shaders.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The frame rate is unstable

  1. Choose a lower target from 120, 90, 60, or 30 FPS.
  2. Use VSync or compatible variable refresh if your display supports it.
  3. Reduce shadow resolution or ambient occlusion first, then reassess.
  4. Try DLSS, FSR, or XeSS if your configuration supports one.
  5. Compare FXAA, SMAA, and TAA at the same target before changing the output aspect ratio.

This sequence changes performance-heavy or reconstruction features while preserving the display shape you selected.

Keep the platform distinction clear

Microsoft’s announced backward-compatibility PC program and Lost Odyssey Recomp are separate projects. The Xbox announcement mentions features such as resolution scaling up to 4×, VSync, fullscreen and windowed modes, anisotropic filtering, and enhanced anti-aliasing for that program’s listed titles. Those statements do not establish that Lost Odyssey is included, nor do they define Recomp’s settings.

For Recomp, use the project’s own menus: title screen or camp menu for Settings, Gameplay → Controls for input, the display page for mode, aspect ratio, monitor, and GPU, and the graphics page for image quality and frame rate. That keeps the configuration tied to the build you are actually running.

A concise setup checklist

  • Confirm that you are configuring Lost Odyssey Recomp, not assuming an official Microsoft PC release.
  • Open Settings from the title menu with Y or keyboard S, or use System → Settings from the camp menu.
  • On Windows, use LostOdysseyRecomp.exe --setup if you need configuration before startup.
  • Remap controller buttons or keyboard keys under Settings → Gameplay → Controls.
  • Set button prompts and vibration strength while testing the input layout.
  • Choose Windowed or Fullscreen and select the intended display and GPU.
  • Use Auto, 16:9, 21:9, or 4:3 according to the image shape you want to preserve.
  • Restart after a GPU change and answer the display confirmation within five seconds.
  • Set native output first, then tune HDR, gamma, anti-aliasing, upscaling, shadows, ambient occlusion, anisotropic filtering, depth of field, and bloom.
  • Choose 30, 60, 90, or 120 FPS based on sustained performance, with VSync or compatible variable refresh where appropriate.
  • Allow first-launch shader preparation to finish; later starts should reuse compiled shaders unless an update changes them.
