For a conventional spoken-word podcast streamed in stereo, set OBS’s streaming audio bitrate to 128 Kbps and sample rate to 44.1 kHz. In OBS, go to Settings → Output and change the streaming audio bitrate—not the recording or video bitrate. These are YouTube’s recommendations for stereo audio; AAC is a suitable codec when available.
Set the OBS streaming audio bitrate
- Open OBS Studio and select Settings → Output.
- Find the streaming audio bitrate control and set it to 128 Kbps. OBS’s Output Mode and version can change the layout. If the field is not visible, check the Output Mode and the streaming controls; do not change the recording bitrate by mistake. OBS documents streaming Audio Bitrate in its output settings overview.
- Set the audio sample rate to 44.1 kHz in OBS’s audio settings. The precise location and layout can vary by version.
- Use stereo for an ordinary podcast. Choose AAC if it is available for the streaming output; YouTube lists AAC and MP3 as accepted audio codecs for RTMP/RTMPS streams.
YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz for stereo. OBS’s overview gives around 160 Kbps as general streaming guidance, but for a YouTube destination the platform-specific recommendation is the more relevant setting. Keep audio settings separate from video settings
The audio bitrate controls the audio portion of the stream. It does not set the video bitrate. YouTube’s video recommendations depend on incoming video codec, resolution and frame rate, so choose those separately according to your visual setup and upload capacity. Even a podcast with a static image or minimal visuals needs a valid video feed for a YouTube Live encoder stream. YouTube’s live encoder settings

Do not apply YouTube’s 5.1 audio figures to a normal stereo podcast: its guidance for 5.1 is 48 kHz and 384 Kbps, for a different channel layout and use case.

Check the microphone and audio signal
A bitrate setting cannot fix a noisy, weak or missing source. Confirm that your microphone is reaching the OBS scene and that its level is audible. OBS supports adding an audio input device, such as a microphone, as a scene source. Avoid capturing the same device both globally through Settings → Audio and again as a scene input unless that is intentional; OBS warns this can cause echo. An external microphone is optional, not a requirement for changing bitrate. OBS Audio Sources
Test before the live podcast
- Run a test stream with audio and motion similar to the planned broadcast. YouTube advises testing before going live.
- Check that the microphone is reaching OBS and that the stream sounds as expected; listen for echo, clipping, silence or excessive noise.
- Watch YouTube’s stream health and messages during the test and event. YouTube recommends keeping the total stream bitrate within available upload bandwidth, with 20% headroom. Account for audio and video together rather than treating the audio setting as the whole stream budget.

Troubleshoot common audio problems
- The stream is silent: Check that the microphone is selected as an OBS audio input and that its meter responds. Confirm the streaming audio controls are configured, then test again.
- There is an echo: Check whether the microphone or other device is being captured both globally in OBS audio settings and as a scene input. Remove the duplicate capture if it is unintended.
- The audio is noisy or weak: Review the source signal and microphone placement or input, rather than expecting a bitrate change to clean it up.
- The stream reports network interruptions: Check total audio-plus-video bitrate against available upload bandwidth and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- You cannot find the bitrate field: Confirm you are in Settings → Output and looking at streaming rather than recording controls. OBS Output Mode and version affect what is shown.
