Choose a deliberate recording path and format, test the complete workflow, and treat “24/7” as an operating goal—not a guarantee: OBS’s launch options can start recording with a chosen collection and profile, but they do not by themselves provide crash, power-loss, or full-disk recovery.
Understand what the collection saves—and what it does not
A scene collection and a profile serve different purposes. OBS scene collections save scenes and sources, including global audio sources; profiles save most output-related settings. Switching to a collection does not set up recording output, resolution, or other profile settings. Create and maintain both for the school channel.

OBS’s documentation describes Scene Collections and Profiles separately. A dedicated collection keeps school layouts distinct from other OBS work; a matching profile keeps the recording configuration organized with them.
Create a dedicated school-channel collection
- In OBS, open the Scene Collection menu and create a new collection. Give it a recognizable name, such as School Channel – Recording.
- Add only the layouts the channel needs. Possible scenes include a holding or title screen, a program scene, a schedule or announcement scene, and a closing screen. These are examples, not required OBS presets.
- Add and label sources so another staff member can identify them. OBS scenes can combine images, text, video, webcams or capture devices, and displays. Use names that distinguish school-specific assets and live inputs.
- For every scene, check source visibility and stacking order, then inspect the preview. Confirm that titles are readable, the intended media is visible, and no unintended source covers another.
Scene collections are intended to hold and switch between scene-and-source arrangements. For additional operators, clear names and a limited set of intentional scenes make the setup easier to understand and hand over.

Pair it with a recording profile
- Open the Profile menu and select or create a profile for this channel’s recording configuration.
- Keep in mind that choosing the school scene collection does not select or configure this profile’s recording output. Confirm the active profile before changing output or video settings.
- After configuring the profile, verify both the active collection and profile before a planned recording or automated launch.
Set the recording destination and format
Choose a recording path you can manage
In OBS, open Settings > Output > Recording and set the Recording Path to the intended destination. The destination might be local storage or a drive available to the computer, but the path must be usable when recording starts. Check the actual saved file rather than assuming OBS wrote it where expected.
There is no universal storage capacity for a continuous school recording. The amount needed depends on the recording settings and how long files must be retained. Work out the school’s required retention and estimate storage from its actual recording quality or bitrate and recording hours; also decide who will monitor free space and manage older files. OBS’s recording guidance explains the path setting but does not establish how much capacity a particular school needs.

Use MKV for the recording file; remux when needed
In Settings > Output > Recording, choose a recording format. OBS recommends MKV because an ungraceful stop is less likely to corrupt the entire file. The OBS Project’s Standard Recording Output Guide, published May 26, 2023, states: “MKV is recommended in case of unforeseen issues arising, since MKV will not corrupt the whole file if there is no graceful stoppage of recording.” This does not mean a recording cannot lose data or be damaged.

If a downstream editor or workflow needs MP4, use OBS’s remux function after recording to convert the MKV container. Remuxing is a compatibility step, not a substitute for backup or a guarantee that a damaged recording can be recovered.

Select an encoder and quality the machine can sustain
Choose an encoder and recording quality based on the computer and intended material, then test them on that machine. OBS notes that settings other than Same as stream can require additional resources. A setting that works briefly may not be suitable for prolonged use; the documentation does not establish that a particular computer can encode indefinitely.
Choose video and audio settings for the school’s material
- Open Settings > Video. Set the Base (Canvas) Resolution for the layout you are composing and the Output (Scaled) Resolution for the recording you need. These values need not be identical.
- Set the frame rate for the source material and the computer’s capabilities. OBS notes that 60 fps can be more taxing than 30 fps; higher is not automatically better for slides, announcements, or other school programming.
- Open the audio settings and select the intended audio devices. Watch the audio meters while testing playback or inputs so you can catch silence, clipping, or the wrong source before relying on the setup.
- Apply the settings and inspect each scene in preview. Confirm that all intended audio and visual sources are present in the scene where they are needed.
OBS’s Quick Start Guide covers video configuration and recommends testing before the first recording or stream. The best combination of resolution, frame rate, and encoding quality depends on the source material and available hardware, so validate the actual settings rather than assuming a high frame rate or resolution will work continuously.

Test the complete recording workflow
- Start a recording and let it run for a few minutes. OBS strongly encourages a short test before relying on a first stream or recording.
- Check that the recording appears at the configured destination and plays back. Verify picture, sound, scene transitions, and any text or media that must appear.
- Check the destination drive’s available space and confirm that the path remains available under the conditions in which the school plans to operate.
- Run through the intended operator procedure, including selecting the correct collection and profile, starting recording, and stopping it normally. If the process is to be automated, test the planned launch sequence as well.
A few minutes of testing can reveal configuration problems, but it does not establish that a system will run indefinitely. Re-test after material changes to scenes, sources, output settings, software, storage, or the computer.

Use the exact names of the collection and profile configured in OBS. The options are documented in the OBS Project’s Launch Parameters reference. For a scheduled or automated Windows launch, OBS’s guide says to set the working directory to the folder containing obs64.exe.
These parameters control launch behavior; they are not a complete unattended recovery system. The reviewed OBS guidance does not establish that OBS will restart after a crash, recover after a power loss, resume after a disconnected drive, alert an operator, or handle a full disk. Before describing a school channel as genuinely continuous, separately plan and test how its operating system or other automation detects failure, relaunches the application, checks storage, and notifies someone who can respond.
