Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To connect OBS Studio to YouTube Live, copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, enter them in OBS > Settings > Stream, start streaming from OBS, then check the preview in YouTube and click Go live. The key is a credential: keep it private. The same setup works for an Indian devotional music channel, but it does not grant rights to broadcast a bhajan, kirtan, recording, or performance.
Before you configure OBS: check livestream access
Your YouTube channel must be verified, and YouTube says it must not have livestreaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. The cited YouTube guidance does not specify a separate India-only requirement for using an OBS stream key. Check your channel’s access before troubleshooting OBS. YouTube’s livestreaming tips

Find the stream URL and key in YouTube Studio
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live.
- Open the Stream tab in Live Control Room. Create a stream or select an existing one. If you have streamed before, YouTube may load previous stream settings and its key.
- Copy the stream URL and the stream key. Keep them distinct: OBS needs the URL as the server address when configuring a custom service, and the key in the separate key field. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain this workflow.
Enter the key in OBS Studio
- Open OBS and go to Settings > Stream.
- If YouTube is available in the Service menu, select it and paste the key into the stream-key field.
- If you need a custom service, choose that option, paste YouTube’s stream URL into the Server field, and paste the key into the separate Stream Key field. Do not put the key in the server field.
- Save the settings. Before broadcasting, confirm that OBS is sending the intended scene, audio, and video.
OBS labels can vary by version, but the important distinction remains: YouTube provides a server URL and a separate key. For a conventional encoder connection, YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection between the encoder and YouTube. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance
Start the broadcast and go live on YouTube
- In OBS, select Start Streaming.
- Wait for the incoming feed and preview to appear in YouTube Live Control Room. Check the picture and sound there.
- When the preview is ready and looks right, select Go live in Live Control Room. Sending video from OBS does not by itself complete the final YouTube go-live step.
For a scheduled broadcast, test the full chain ahead of time; use an unlisted test if appropriate. YouTube recommends previewing and monitoring stream health and audio/video quality. YouTube streaming tips

Choose encoder settings for a reliable devotional stream
For a conventional SDR stream over RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube’s published guidance includes H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), a recommended two-second keyframe interval, and AAC or MP3 audio. Use YouTube’s bitrate guidance for your chosen codec and resolution rather than applying one bitrate to every setup. YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance
- Resolution and frame rate: Choose settings your computer can encode reliably and your upload connection can sustain. A static devotional scene may not need the same frame rate as a performance with substantial movement.
- Bitrate: Set it according to YouTube’s table for the selected resolution and codec, then test under realistic conditions.
- Keyframes: Use the recommended two-second interval.
- Audio: Confirm that the selected microphone, mixer, or playback source is reaching the OBS meters and the YouTube preview at a usable level.
- Protocol: Prefer RTMPS where available for an encrypted encoder-to-YouTube connection.
Run an upload-speed test and leave headroom rather than using all available upload capacity. Account for other people and devices sharing the connection. Test with audio and movement resembling the actual broadcast, then watch Live Control Room’s preview and stream-health messages. YouTube notes that an interrupted connection can disrupt a stream. Protect and reset your stream key
YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat the key as sensitive: do not show it in a screen share, recording, or public post, and do not share it with people who should not be able to send a feed to your stream. Manage live stream settings
If you think the key has been exposed, a channel owner or manager can reset it in YouTube Studio under Go Live > Stream. Update OBS with the new key before trying to send the feed again.

Check music permissions before you broadcast
A devotional subject or traditional song does not automatically make every recording or performance free to livestream. Rights may differ between a composition, a particular sound recording, an arrangement, a backing track, and a performer’s contribution. Confirm that you have the necessary permissions for the exact material and planned broadcast; configuring a stream key does not establish those rights. YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance tells creators to ensure their audio and video do not infringe on others’ content. YouTube’s live stream settings guidance
Troubleshoot common OBS-to-YouTube problems
| What you see | Likely check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive a feed | The channel may not have livestream access, or the URL/key may be wrong. | Check channel eligibility, then copy the current URL and key from the intended stream in Live Control Room and verify the OBS fields. |
| OBS connects to the wrong destination or fails after a key change | The server URL and key may have been swapped, or OBS may still have an old key. | Put the stream URL in the server field and the key in the key field; if the key was reset, replace the saved OBS key. |
| The OBS preview is blank or silent | The selected scene, media source, or audio input may not be active. | Check the intended OBS scene and audio meters, then confirm the picture and sound in Live Control Room before going live. |
| Video stalls or stream health reports a problem | The upload connection may be unstable or oversubscribed. | Test upload speed, reduce competing network use, leave upload headroom, and retry with settings your connection can sustain. |
| The stream looks or sounds wrong after launch | The encoder settings or source levels may not match the intended output. | Review resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio in a test broadcast; use YouTube’s encoder guidance for the selected format. |
For an ordinary SDR encoder stream, RTMP/RTMPS is the straightforward path described here. YouTube also documents HLS for workflows that need HLS-specific capabilities, including HDR or codecs unsupported by RTMP; HLS changes the setup and latency behavior and is not required for a typical SDR stream-key configuration.
