How to Configure a JioFi Wi‑Fi Device on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9.4

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 9.4 connects to a JioFi device as it would to any Wi‑Fi access point: turn on the JioFi, enable RHEL’s Wi‑Fi radio, select the device’s SSID, and enter the Wi‑Fi key printed on the device or under its battery cover. NetworkManager can complete the setup from the command line, GNOME Settings, or the text-based nmtui interface.

What RHEL needs before you connect

  • An installed Wi‑Fi adapter that RHEL can see.
  • NetworkManager running with Wi‑Fi enabled.
  • The exact JioFi network name (SSID) and Wi‑Fi key from the device label or battery-cover panel.

Check the adapter and radio state:

nmcli device status
nmcli radio wifi on
nmcli device wifi list

The first command shows detected interfaces and their state. The second turns on NetworkManager’s Wi‑Fi radio. The scan lists nearby networks, including the JioFi SSID when the hotspot is powered and broadcasting.

Connect from the command line with nmcli

  1. Scan for the hotspot

    nmcli device wifi list

Read the SSID exactly as displayed. Do not substitute a guessed name.

  2. Connect and enter the key securely

nmcli device wifi connect "JioFi-SSID" --ask

Replace JioFi-SSID with the actual network name. NetworkManager prompts for the Wi‑Fi key and automatically creates a connection profile.

  3. Confirm that the profile is active

    nmcli connection show --active
  4. Test connectivity and DNS

    ping -c 3 example.com

Successful replies show that the connection is up and hostname resolution is working.

JioFi normally supplies addresses with DHCP. If the SSID is hidden or a static address is genuinely required, create or modify the profile with nmtui or nm-connection-editor rather than guessing network values.

Connect with GNOME Settings

  1. Open Settings and select Wi‑Fi.
  2. Choose the JioFi SSID shown on the device label and in the network list.
  3. Enter the Wi‑Fi key, then select Connect.

Use nm-connection-editor when you need profile-level controls that the basic Wi‑Fi panel does not expose.

Wi‑Fi or USB tethering?

Path Best when Requirements and limits
Wi‑Fi You need mobility or want to connect several devices. RHEL needs a working Wi‑Fi adapter; select the SSID and enter the key.
USB tethering The computer has no usable Wi‑Fi adapter or you prefer a cable. The particular JioFi model and firmware must expose USB networking; behavior can differ. Jio’s M2S specification lists up to 10 Wi‑Fi connections plus 1 USB-tethering connection.

Jio’s published M2S specification describes 2.4 GHz IEEE 802.11b/g/n Wi‑Fi. Its stated capacity and advertised speeds are vendor specifications, not independent RHEL measurements; the corporate description lists up to 150 Mbps download and 50 Mbps upload.

If plugging in USB does not create a NetworkManager connection, use the Wi‑Fi method or consult the guide for the exact JioFi model. Avoid unverified third-party drivers.

Open the JioFi configuration page

  1. First connect the computer to the JioFi Wi‑Fi network or to its USB network.
  2. Open a browser and go to http://jiofi.local.html.
  3. Sign in with the credentials specified for your model. Quick-start guides for documented JioFi models list administrator as both the default username and password.
  4. Change the default administrator password after the first login.

The local hostname is model-specific and may not resolve while the computer is connected through another network. The web-admin password is separate from the Wi‑Fi key used to join the hotspot.

Troubleshoot the common failures

The JioFi SSID does not appear

  • Confirm the device is powered on and its Wi‑Fi indicator is lit.
  • Check that the SIM is inserted and activated.
  • Force a fresh scan, then list networks again:
nmcli device wifi rescan
nmcli device wifi list

Authentication fails

Re-enter the Wi‑Fi key exactly as printed on the device. Check characters carefully and make sure you are not using the web-administrator password.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

RHEL connects but there is no internet

  1. Check device state and the active profile:
nmcli device
nmcli connection show --active
  1. Verify that the Jio SIM is inserted, activated, provisioned for data, and receiving service.
  2. Test an IP address and then a hostname to distinguish general connectivity from DNS failure:
ping -c 3 1.1.1.1
ping -c 3 example.com

The administration page will not open

Reconnect directly to the JioFi SSID or USB network and retry http://jiofi.local.html. A hostname intended for the JioFi’s local network usually will not work through an unrelated Wi‑Fi or wired connection.

Which RHEL method should you choose?

Method Strength Use it when
nmcli Fast, scriptable, and available over remote shells. You want repeatable command-line setup or administration.
GNOME Settings Clear visual network selection and password entry. You are using a desktop installation and the SSID is visible.
nmtui Text-based editing with access to more profile fields. You are on a terminal-only system or need to edit advanced settings.

The Bottom Line

For RHEL 9.4, the reliable path is ordinary NetworkManager Wi‑Fi: enable the radio, scan for the exact JioFi SSID, connect with nmcli device wifi connect "SSID" --ask, and verify the active profile and a test ping. USB tethering and the local administration page are available only when supported by the specific JioFi model and firmware.
