How to Configure a Controller for Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition on PC (PCSX2 Guide)

To play Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition with a gamepad on PC, configure the emulated PlayStation 2 controller in PCSX2. Open Settings > Controllers, choose SDL as the input source, configure Controller Port 1, and run Automatic Mapping when it is available. If the layout is wrong, map every control manually. On Windows, SDL Raw Input can correct scrambled or unresponsive inputs, but it requires a manual remap; XInput is a backup for compatible Windows controllers.

There is no verified, current game-specific PCSX2 preset for this title. The reliable approach is to map the standard DualShock 2 controls, test them, and then adjust sensitivity or button placement to your preference.

What you are configuring

Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition is a PlayStation 2 game. On a PC, PCSX2 emulates the PS2 hardware, so you configure a virtual PS2 gamepad rather than a native Windows game profile. The controller settings are shared by the emulator, and the game reads the controls assigned to the virtual console’s first controller port.

PCSX2’s current controller guide is the authoritative reference for the setup path: PCSX2 Controllers documentation. Its FAQ also explains how Windows, Linux and macOS handle common controller types: PCSX2 FAQ.

Logitech G F310 Wired Gamepad Controller Console - Blue/Black | Console-like layout, 4-switch D-pad
  • With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
  • Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
  • A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
  • The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
  • The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.

The PCSX2 Wiki page for the game records an old Windows test using the LilyPad 0.11.0 plugin. That is historical information, not a requirement for a current PCSX2 installation. Older input plugins have been incorporated into PCSX2, so you should use the integrated Controllers screen instead of trying to install LilyPad.

Before you open PCSX2

Connect and identify the controller

Connect the controller before launching PCSX2, or connect it and restart the emulator if it is not detected. A wired device avoids battery or wireless-sleep problems during initial mapping. If you use a wireless pad, turn it on, confirm that the operating system sees it, and keep it awake while you configure the buttons.

  • On Windows, an XInput-compatible controller can normally be handled by SDL or XInput.
  • On Linux and macOS, PCSX2 generally detects recognizable controllers through SDL and binds them automatically, although individual devices can still require manual correction.
  • Do not assume that a controller’s labels match the PS2 labels. A button marked A, B, X or Y must be assigned to the corresponding Cross, Circle, Square or Triangle field based on the layout you want.

Use a current PCSX2 build

Install and launch a current PCSX2 release rather than looking for the obsolete LilyPad plugin. Menus can differ slightly between releases, but the relevant path remains Settings > Controllers. If you cannot find that entry, you may be running an unusually old build or a different emulator.

Know the original PS2 control names

The PS2 manual scan for the game shows the controls that PCSX2 is emulating: directional buttons, the four face buttons, L1/L2 and R1/R2 shoulder buttons, Start, Select, Analog mode and both analog sticks. You can use the Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition PS2 manual to identify those labels. The manual diagram is a reference to the original controller, not a promise that a particular PC controller will be detected correctly.

Recommended setup: SDL on Controller Port 1

  1. Open the controller settings. In PCSX2, select Settings > Controllers.
  2. Choose the input source. Select SDL first. PCSX2 describes SDL as its preferred input source because it is cross-platform and supports automatic mapping for most controllers.
  3. Select Controller Port 1. The ports represent the two controller sockets on the emulated PS2. Games almost always expect the first player on Port 1, so configure that port before touching Port 2.
  4. Run Automatic Mapping. Choose Automatic Mapping, select the detected controller, and let PCSX2 fill in the fields. The exact device name depends on your operating system and controller.
  5. Inspect the result. Press each physical button and move each stick while looking at the assigned fields. Automatic mapping is a starting point, not a guarantee that every device uses the layout you prefer.
  6. Save the configuration. Close the settings window only after the assignments are visible and the controller remains connected. If a field is wrong, click that field and press the intended physical control to replace it.

For a typical modern gamepad, map the left stick to the PS2 left analog stick, the right stick to the PS2 right analog stick, the four face buttons to Cross, Circle, Square and Triangle, the upper and lower shoulder controls to L1/L2 and R1/R2, and the central buttons to Start and Select. The direction pad can be assigned to the PS2 D-pad. The exact physical button used for each face-button label is your choice; what matters is that the assignment shown in PCSX2 matches the layout you intend to use in the game.

Input-source choices and when to use each

Input source Platform support Automatic mapping Best use Important limitation
SDL Cross-platform Supported for most controllers First choice for ordinary modern controllers A device can still report an unusual layout or incorrect inputs and require manual correction
SDL Raw Input Windows Do not rely on automatic mapping Windows troubleshooting when SDL inputs are scrambled or unresponsive Clear the old mapping and assign every control manually
XInput Windows PCXS2 supplies bindings for common XInput devices Backup for an XInput-compatible controller when SDL does not behave correctly Windows-only; devices that are not XInput-compatible will not benefit
DirectInput Windows Not supported Older or third-party devices that fail with SDL and XInput PCSX2 describes it as generally the least reliable option, with no automatic mapping

PCSX2’s documentation calls SDL “The preferred Input Source.” Start there even if your controller is advertised as XInput. Switch to XInput only when SDL fails to recognize or interpret the device correctly. Treat DirectInput as a last resort, because it gives you more manual work and fewer automatic safeguards.

Manual mapping, control by control

Manual mapping is useful when Automatic Mapping leaves controls blank, swaps buttons, reverses an axis or assigns a trigger as a digital button. In the Controllers window, select the Port 1 field you want to change, then press the physical button or move the stick that should operate it. Repeat until every control you need has a visible assignment.

PCSX2 field Original PS2 control What to assign
D-pad Up, Down, Left, Right Directional buttons The controller’s four-way pad or another four-direction control
Cross, Circle, Square, Triangle Face buttons The four main action buttons in the arrangement you want to remember
L1 and R1 Upper shoulder buttons The left and right bumpers or equivalent upper shoulder controls
L2 and R2 Lower shoulder buttons The left and right triggers, if your device exposes them correctly
Left Analog X/Y Left stick Horizontal and vertical movement of the left stick
Right Analog X/Y Right stick Horizontal and vertical movement of the right stick
Start Start Your controller’s menu or Start button
Select Select Your controller’s back, view or Select button
Analog DualShock 2 analog-mode switch Optional; assign it if you want to toggle the virtual pad’s analog mode

The table reflects the original PS2 labels shown in the manual. It is not a verified title-specific preset, and it does not dictate whether, for example, Circle or Cross should be the most comfortable confirmation button on your controller. If an axis moves in the opposite direction, remap that axis or use the available invert option in your PCSX2 build rather than changing unrelated buttons.

Fixing incorrect or unresponsive Windows inputs

SDL detects the controller, but buttons are scrambled

  1. Return to Settings > Controllers and select the affected controller port.
  2. Enable SDL Raw Input.
  3. Clear the existing assignments so old SDL mappings do not conflict with the raw-input events.
  4. Click each field and manually press the intended button or move the intended stick.
  5. Save and test the game again.

SDL Raw Input is specifically a Windows troubleshooting mode. PCSX2 warns that its automatic mapper will not work properly with this mode, so manual mapping is part of the fix rather than an optional extra step.

SDL does not work with an XInput-compatible device

Choose XInput as the input source and configure Controller Port 1 again. PCSX2’s FAQ says Windows users receive XInput bindings that work automatically with Xbox One and other XInput controllers. That statement describes the input standard, not a guarantee for every third-party device, so confirm each assignment before launching the race.

The only remaining option is DirectInput

Select DirectInput only when SDL and XInput fail or your older controller does not expose either standard. Because DirectInput has no automatic mapping in PCSX2, assign the controls manually and expect to spend extra time identifying axes and triggers. If a trigger appears as two unrelated half-axes, map the direction that produces the intended full press and test it in the game.

Nothing responds after mapping

  • Confirm the controller is still powered and visible to the operating system.
  • Make sure the assignments were made under Controller Port 1, not Port 2.
  • Close other programs that may have taken exclusive control of the device, then reopen PCSX2.
  • Delete the affected mapping and assign it again while the controller is connected.
  • If you changed input sources, remap the controls for the new source instead of assuming the previous source’s assignments carry over correctly.

Verifying the mapping before you start a race

Current PCSX2 Qt and Big Picture interfaces do not include a built-in input tester. PCSX2’s documented alternative is a PS2 Pad Test homebrew application, which displays DualShock 2 inputs as you press mapped controls. Use it when you need to distinguish a PCSX2 mapping problem from a game-specific behavior.

  3. Move both sticks through their full range and check that each axis reaches the expected direction.
  4. Press each direction on the D-pad.
  5. Toggle Analog if you assigned it and confirm that the virtual pad changes mode.

If the test application shows the wrong control, correct the assignment in PCSX2 before troubleshooting the game. If every control appears correctly there but the game does not react, recheck that the game is using Port 1 and that you did not accidentally configure a second port.

Midnight Club 3-specific expectations

Do not search for a special “Midnight Club 3 controller profile” as a prerequisite. No current, verified PCSX2 preset for this title is established by the available documentation. The game’s Wiki entry’s LilyPad reference is a historical Windows test configuration and should not be treated as a present-day compatibility guarantee.

The game expects the standard PS2 controller vocabulary, so a correctly configured DualShock-style mapping is the appropriate foundation. You can change which physical buttons represent Cross, Circle, Square and Triangle, but keeping the four face buttons in a consistent diamond arrangement makes on-screen prompts easier to follow. Map both analog sticks even if you initially plan to drive with one; camera and menu behavior may use controls you do not notice during the first race.

Platform notes

Windows

Use SDL first. If SDL produces wrong or missing events, try SDL Raw Input and remap manually. XInput is the practical fallback for a controller that follows the XInput standard. DirectInput is reserved for older devices that do not work with those choices.

Linux and macOS

PCSX2’s FAQ says recognizable controllers are automatically detected and bound through SDL on Linux and macOS. Start with SDL, inspect the assignments, and manually correct any button or axis that does not match your physical layout. The Windows-only SDL Raw Input mode and XInput fallback are not the normal path on these platforms.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Configuring Port 2 first: player one normally belongs on Port 1.
  • Installing an old plugin: current PCSX2 uses integrated controller configuration; the historical LilyPad entry is not a setup instruction.
  • Trusting automatic mapping without checking: a controller can be detected while still reporting a swapped face button or incorrect trigger axis.
  • Using SDL Raw Input and expecting automatic mapping: this mode requires a fresh manual mapping.
  • Choosing DirectInput immediately: SDL is preferred, and XInput is a useful Windows fallback for compatible devices.
  • Assuming every controller behaves identically: PCSX2’s general bindings cannot guarantee a particular third-party model will map correctly.
  • Testing only one button: verify both sticks, all shoulder controls, the D-pad and the central buttons before beginning a long session.

A quick decision path

  1. If you have a recognized controller, select SDL and configure Port 1.
  2. If Automatic Mapping works, inspect every assignment and run a pad test or the game.
  3. If mappings are wrong on Windows, switch to SDL Raw Input, clear the old map and assign controls manually.
  4. If SDL still fails and the device is XInput-compatible, choose XInput and remap or verify the generated bindings.
  5. If neither works, use DirectInput only for a device that requires it and map everything manually.
  6. If the controls work in a pad tester but not in the game, check that the game is attached to Port 1 and revisit the PS2 control labels rather than reinstalling old plugins.
