1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo configure a controller in Final Fantasy XIV, switch the game to Gamepad Mode on Windows or use Controller Mode on console, then open the platform’s Gamepad Settings or Controller Settings menu to assign buttons, choose prompt icons, and enable optional features such as the virtual mouse. On Windows, the official manual states that all XInput-compliant gamepads are compatible. PlayStation, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2 use platform-specific labels and button diagrams, so follow the mapping shown for your platform rather than copying a PC or PlayStation layout.
What changes between PC and console
Final Fantasy XIV supports mouse-and-keyboard and controller play on Windows. PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Xbox Series X|S are built around Controller Mode, while the Windows client calls the equivalent setting Gamepad Mode. The exact menu wording can vary slightly between platforms and after updates.

| Platform | Mode label and starting state | Configuration menu | Compatibility or mapping note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows PC | Gamepad Mode; mouse-and-keyboard is also available | System Configuration > Gamepad Settings | The manual says all XInput-compliant gamepads are compatible. Button allocations are editable. |
| PlayStation 5 / PlayStation 4 | Controller Mode is the default | Controller Settings or Gamepad Settings, depending on the screen | Use the PlayStation button names and diagrams in the platform section of the manual. |
| Xbox Series X|S | Controller Mode is the default | Controller Settings or Gamepad Settings, depending on the screen | Use the Xbox button names and diagrams; do not substitute PlayStation labels. |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | Controller Mode and Switch 2-specific prompts | Controller Settings or Gamepad Settings, depending on the screen | The current manual has Switch 2 instructions. Its button names should not be inferred from PC, Xbox, or PlayStation layouts. |
The manual landing page records a last update of September 8, 2026 and cautions that menu descriptions can become outdated after later patches. If a label in your client differs from the wording here, use the matching label displayed in the game.

- Connect the controller before launching the game, or reconnect it and return to the title screen if it is not detected.
- On Windows, use a gamepad that presents itself as XInput. That is the compatibility class named by the official manual; the statement does not guarantee compatibility for every other controller protocol.
- Decide whether you want the controller to handle every action or only movement and combat while the mouse handles menus. You can change this later without rebuilding your hotbars.
- If you are moving between clients or platforms, plan a settings backup before changing devices. Launcher and server backups have different transfer limits.
Set up a controller on Windows PC
1. Confirm that Windows and FFXIV see the pad
Connect the XInput-compliant controller, start the Windows client, and enter a character. If the game does not react to the sticks or buttons, close other software that may be remapping the pad, reconnect it, and restart the client. The manual’s compatibility wording is specifically “All XInput compliant gamepads are compatible with the game”; it is not a promise that every USB, Bluetooth, or legacy DirectInput device will work without an adapter or remapping layer.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
2. Switch to Gamepad Mode
- Open the main menu.
- Select System, then Character Configuration.
- Use the mode toggle at the top left to select Gamepad Mode.
- Apply the change and test movement with the left stick and camera control with the right stick.
The mode choice determines which control scheme is active; it does not erase your character’s hotbars or keybinds.
3. Assign buttons
- Open System from the main menu.
- Choose System Configuration, then Gamepad Settings.
- Open Button Configuration and select an action for each control you want to change.
- Confirm the allocation, then return to a safe area and test combat, targeting, menu navigation, and camera controls.
If allocations cannot be adjusted, the official manual suggests trying again with Enable POV unchecked. “POV” refers to the controller’s hat or directional input; disabling it can resolve a conflict on some devices, but it also changes how that input is exposed to the game.
4. Choose the correct prompt icons
In System Configuration > Gamepad Settings, select the icon type that matches the physical controller. The guide lists XInput/Xbox and PlayStation icon types. After changing the icon selection, restart the game; the new prompts do not take effect until a restart.
Configure PlayStation, Xbox, or Switch 2
PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4
Controller Mode is the normal starting state. To change schemes, open System > Character Configuration and use the mode toggle. For assignments, open System Configuration and select the screen labeled Controller Settings or Gamepad Settings, then enter the button-configuration page. On PlayStation 4, the virtual-mouse menu is specifically labeled Controller Settings in the UI guide.

Xbox Series X|S
Use the same in-game path—System > Character Configuration for the mode toggle and System Configuration for controller settings—but read the Xbox names and diagrams shown by the client. Shoulder buttons, thumb-stick clicks, and face buttons are not named the same way as their PlayStation equivalents.
Nintendo Switch 2
The current Lodestone manual includes Switch 2 controller instructions and its own button labels. Open the platform’s controller or gamepad settings from System Configuration, then use the Switch 2 button-configuration page. Do not translate a PlayStation “cross” or an Xbox “A” instruction directly to Switch 2; follow the symbols shown on your screen.
Changing schemes on a console
If the game is using the wrong scheme, return to System > Character Configuration and select the mode toggle. The official mode-switching FAQ identifies Controller Mode as the default on PlayStation and Xbox. The setting is independent of whether you later use the virtual mouse for menus.

Understand the default control model
The general controller scheme uses the left stick for character movement and the right stick for camera movement. Combat actions are normally reached through cross-hotbar combinations: hold a shoulder trigger and press a D-pad direction or face button. This lets a controller expose many actions without a keyboard.

Target cycling, party-member selection, menu commands, and other actions have platform-specific mappings. Because the button names and prompt art differ, use the platform table in the official manual rather than relying on a mixed PC/PlayStation/Xbox list. You can reassign any allocation that conflicts with your hand position or preferred targeting method.
A sensible first-pass layout
- Keep movement on the left stick and camera control on the right stick while learning; changing both at once makes troubleshooting harder.
- Place frequently used combat actions on the face-button and trigger combinations that are easiest to hold without releasing movement.
- Reserve a comfortable input for target cycling and another for confirming or canceling menus.
- Test the layout on a low-risk training target before entering a duty. Check both normal and expanded cross-hotbar pages if you use them.
Use the virtual mouse for cursor-based menus
A controller can operate an on-screen cursor. Open System > System Configuration > Gamepad Settings and enable Enable virtual mouse (the PlayStation 4 screen calls the page Controller Settings). The right stick moves the cursor, and the shoulder triggers act as mouse buttons.
| Platform | Virtual-mouse click inputs | Enable/disable shortcut |
|---|---|---|
| Windows | LT/RT | LB + right thumb-click |
| Xbox | LT/RT | LB + right thumb-click |
| PlayStation 5 / 4 | L2/R2 | L1 + R3 |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | ZL/ZR | Press the right stick |
The virtual mouse is useful for clicking densely packed UI elements, selecting items in lists, or reaching controls that are awkward with directional navigation. It is an optional cursor layer, not a replacement for Gamepad or Controller Mode.

- Open System Configuration > Gamepad Settings.
- Find the icon-type option and select the artwork that matches your controller: XInput/Xbox or PlayStation, as applicable.
- Confirm the change and completely restart the game.
- Check a menu and a hotbar after restarting. If the physical buttons still do not correspond, review the actual allocations in Button Configuration; icon selection changes the artwork, not the underlying assignments.

Back up settings before changing platform or client
FFXIV stores different kinds of configuration data in different places. The official configuration guide distinguishes launcher backups from the in-game server backup function.
| Backup method | Transfers between | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Launcher backup | Windows and Mac | It cannot be transferred to PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, or Nintendo Switch 2. |
| Server backup | Supported settings among Windows, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Mac, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2 | Some environment-dependent values are excluded and must be configured again on the destination device. |
What character backup can include
The guide lists Character Configuration, HUD layout, hotbars and cross hotbars, gear sets, keybinds, log filters, and character-specific macros among character backup data. Use the official in-game/server backup controls and verify the displayed list before confirming.
What client backup can include
Client backup covers listed client-wide settings such as display and sound settings, input-device settings, accessibility settings, and shared macros, subject to the guide’s exclusions. Display resolution, graphics quality, and input device are environment-dependent examples that are not transferable as saved values. Expect to set those again for the new hardware.

Safe migration procedure
- On the original client, open the official backup controls and create the appropriate character and client backups.
- Read the confirmation list; do not assume that every visual or hardware-specific setting is included.
- Sign in on the destination platform and restore the server backup where supported.
- Reconnect the new controller, select its prompt icon type, and test the restored hotbars and targeting.
- Reconfigure excluded values such as resolution, graphics quality, and input device, then save and test again.
Patch 7.4: assign the Command Panel to a thumb-click
Patch 7.4 notes describe a new customization option for assigning the Command Panel to left thumb-click (L3) or right thumb-click (R3). This is a Patch 7.4 addition, not a universal default on every platform or older client.

Troubleshooting by symptom
The controller is connected but nothing moves
- Confirm the game is in Gamepad/Controller Mode through System > Character Configuration.
- On Windows, verify that the device presents as XInput-compliant.
- Reconnect the pad and restart the client after closing competing remapping software.
- Check the allocations in System Configuration > Gamepad Settings > Button Configuration.
Buttons work, but the on-screen prompts are wrong
Select the matching icon type under Gamepad Settings and restart the game. Prompt artwork and physical allocations are separate settings, so inspect both if the mismatch remains.
I cannot edit allocations on PC
Open Gamepad Settings and try with Enable POV unchecked, as recommended by the manual. Then revisit Button Configuration and test the affected input.
The cursor will not appear
Enable Enable virtual mouse in the platform’s Gamepad Settings or Controller Settings page. Use the platform-specific shortcut in the table above to toggle it, and move the cursor with the right stick.

Launcher backups only move between Windows and Mac. Use the supported server backup for cross-platform transfers, then manually restore excluded environment values and verify every hotbar.
A menu name differs from this guide
Menu labels vary by platform and version. Match the function—Character Configuration for the mode toggle, and System Configuration for controller settings—then follow the wording displayed by your client. The manual warns that later patches can make its descriptions outdated.
PC and console setup: what is actually different?
| Question | Windows PC | Console |
|---|---|---|
| Default control context | Can use mouse-and-keyboard or Gamepad Mode | Controller Mode is the default on PlayStation and Xbox; Switch 2 has its own controller instructions |
| Compatibility statement | Official wording specifies XInput-compliant gamepads | Use the controller supported by the platform and the platform-specific in-game labels |
| Mode switch | System > Character Configuration > Gamepad Mode | System > Character Configuration and the platform’s Controller Mode toggle |
| Prompt icons | Choose XInput/Xbox or PlayStation artwork; restart after changing | Use the matching platform artwork and restart when the client requests it |
| Virtual-mouse toggle | LB + right thumb-click | PS5/PS4: L1 + R3; Xbox: LB + right thumb-click; Switch 2: right-stick press |
| Settings transfer | Launcher backup works with Mac; server backup supports listed cross-platform settings | Launcher backup does not transfer to consoles; server backup can transfer supported values |
The documentation does not establish that one platform’s setup is universally easier or better. The practical difference is which labels, prompt icons, backup path, and virtual-mouse shortcut you must use.
Quick Recap
Final pre-duty checklist
- Gamepad/Controller Mode is selected.
- Left stick moves the character and right stick moves the camera as expected.
- Every cross-hotbar page opens and closes correctly.
- Target cycling and party selection use inputs you can reach without losing movement.
- Prompt icons match the physical controller; restart completed after any icon change.
- Virtual mouse is enabled only if you need cursor navigation, and its shortcut is known.
- Any recent backup restore has been checked for missing environment-dependent settings.
- If you use the Patch 7.4 Command Panel assignment, L3 or R3 does not interfere with another essential action.
