To recover after an internet interruption, configure the church’s playout service or encoder to send to the correct YouTube scheduled stream, enable its automatic reconnect feature if it has one, and set YouTube’s separate auto-start and auto-stop options deliberately. These controls do different jobs: an encoder retry attempts to restore its outgoing feed; YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop govern whether encoder actions start or stop the broadcast. Reconnection is not guaranteed, so rehearse the recovery and shutdown workflow before a service.
What you need to configure
- Access to the intended scheduled stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- The stream URL and key from YouTube, entered in the destination settings of the playout service or encoder.
- The service’s own reconnect or automatic retry control, if available. Its name, location, and retry behavior depend on the product and version.
- A planned choice for YouTube auto-start and auto-stop, plus a rehearsal to check what happens when the feed drops and returns.
Do not assume that connecting software to your channel automatically attaches it to the correct scheduled broadcast. Verify the destination and the stream shown in Live Control Room.

Configure the scheduled YouTube stream and playout destination
- Select or create the scheduled stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and select the broadcast for the service. YouTube’s encoder workflow is described in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Copy the stream URL and key into the playout service. YouTube explains that the stream key tells the encoder where to send its feed and allows YouTube to accept it; see Manage live stream settings. Enter both values in the service’s destination settings and confirm they belong to the selected stream.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password. Keep it out of screenshots, volunteer handouts, and public chats. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube and update the key in the playout service; resetting a key means the encoder must be updated.
- Check the broadcast’s start behavior. Start the encoder or playout output and wait for its preview to appear in Live Control Room. In the scheduled workflow, an operator may need to select Go live after the preview appears. If YouTube auto-start is enabled, YouTube says streaming can be started from the encoder. Verify the actual behavior for this broadcast rather than assuming one setting applies to every service.
- Review settings copied from another stream. Reused stream settings also copy auto-start and auto-stop selections. Confirm both settings when preparing each service rather than relying on a previous broadcast’s configuration.
Enable reconnect in the playout service
Find the reconnect, retry, or automatic-recovery option in the encoder or playout service and enable it if offered. The service has not been identified, so there is no reliable universal menu path or retry interval to give. Check that product’s documentation for the exact label, retry policy, and any limits on how long it will attempt to reconnect.
When the service uses OBS, its Stream Connection Troubleshooting article is useful for diagnosing unstable connections and dropped frames, but it does not document the details of an OBS reconnect setting. Do not infer a setting or guarantee a recovery behavior from it.

Choose YouTube auto-start and auto-stop deliberately
YouTube describes auto-start and auto-stop as controls that let encoder actions start or stop streaming. They are not encoder reconnect controls. Turning either option on does not, by itself, ensure that a feed interrupted by lost internet will reconnect or that YouTube will resume the same broadcast.
Decide whether your volunteers will use an explicit Go live action or rely on configured auto-start behavior. Also decide how the broadcast should end: YouTube’s scheduled workflow says to click End Stream and stop encoder output. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; this threshold does not change the need to follow the intended shutdown workflow.

Rehearse interruption and recovery before a service
- Run a controlled test in a non-public setting, or otherwise make sure the test will not interrupt a public service.
- Start the playout output and verify that the preview appears in Live Control Room. Check picture and audio before going live.
- Briefly interrupt the encoder’s network connection, then restore it.
- Check whether the playout service resumes sending, whether YouTube receives the feed, and whether a volunteer must take another action in Live Control Room.
- Test the planned shutdown as well: stop encoder output and use YouTube’s End Stream action as appropriate for the scheduled workflow.
This rehearsal checks your particular service, software, network, and YouTube settings. It is not a guarantee that every later interruption will recover automatically.

Troubleshoot a feed that does not return
Dropped frames or repeated disconnections
OBS Project says dropped frames indicate that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate; enough dropped frames may disconnect the encoder. If the church uses OBS, its troubleshooting guidance recommends checking bitrate against stable upload capacity, trying another ingest server where applicable, reviewing network-related settings, ruling out VPN or security-software interference, and checking network drivers and hardware. Apply only the steps relevant to your software and network. Dynamic bitrate adjustment may reduce quality, but it does not fix the underlying network problem.

If the stream currently relies on Wi-Fi and a suitable cable and network port are available, try a wired Ethernet connection. OBS Project’s 2024-09-30 troubleshooting article recommends a wired connection for streaming. A cable is an optional troubleshooting measure, not a universal requirement or a guarantee of reconnection.
The preview or broadcast is attached to the wrong stream
Recheck the selected scheduled broadcast and the destination configured in the playout service. The YouTube stream URL and key must match the intended stream; sending successfully to the channel in general is not proof that the scheduled service is the one receiving the feed.

The stream key was reset
Replace the old key in the playout service with the current key. YouTube specifies that resetting a stream key requires updating the encoder.
The feed returns but YouTube does not resume as expected
Check the encoder’s retry status separately from YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop options. Confirm in your rehearsal whether an operator needs to select Go live after the preview returns. The behavior depends on the encoder or playout service and the broadcast settings; do not treat the YouTube lifecycle toggles as proof of automatic recovery.
