Make a smaller delivery copy from your original edit: resize it to the destination’s actual pixel requirements, choose a format that destination accepts, and compare compression at the size viewers will see. Keep your original or edited master untouched. For JPEG exports, start from that master each time rather than recompressing an earlier JPEG.
How do I make a photo file smaller without losing quality?
There is no compression setting that makes a file smaller while preserving every bit of image data. Lossy formats such as JPEG reduce file size by discarding data, so the practical goal is to keep the image convincing at its intended display size. The best compromise depends on the photograph and where you plan to share it.

- Keep a master. Preserve the RAW file or edited master and export a separate delivery copy. Adobe warns that JPEG artifacts can accumulate with each save and advises saving JPEGs from the original image rather than from a previously saved JPEG: Adobe’s JPEG optimization guidance.
- Check the destination’s requirements. A website, social platform, email recipient, or print service may have its own pixel dimensions, accepted formats, or upload limit. Confirm those requirements first; there is no universal pixel size or file-size cap that fits every destination.
- Resize to the required pixel dimensions. Preserve the aspect ratio, and do not enlarge an image that is smaller than the requested output. Lightroom Classic provides export controls for the long edge, short edge, dimensions, and megapixels. See Adobe’s Lightroom Classic export documentation.
- Choose a compatible format and adjust compression in small steps. Export a few versions, then compare them rather than assuming one setting suits every image.
- Inspect at the intended viewing size. Check the animal’s eyes, whiskers, feathers or fur, as well as fine branches and smooth backgrounds. Look for smearing, blockiness, or banding. These are useful visual checks, not results from a wildlife-specific compression test.
- Finish for the output. Apply sharpening for the intended screen or print medium after setting output dimensions. Review edges for halos; sharpening cannot restore detail discarded by aggressive compression. Set the color profile and metadata deliberately, including whether GPS location information should remain.
In Lightroom Classic, Adobe documents export options for output sharpening, color space and metadata, including removal of GPS information. These controls help tailor a delivery file to its destination, but they do not replace checking the exported image itself.
Which format should I use for wildlife photos?
Use JPEG when broad photographic compatibility is the priority. WebP can be a smaller option for a supported web workflow, while AVIF and JPEG XL should be used only after checking that the receiving app or platform accepts them. TIFF or PNG may suit lossless workflows or editing handoffs, but should not be assumed to produce the smallest photographic delivery file.

| Format | What it offers | Tradeoff and use |
|---|---|---|
| JPEG | Lossy compression with quality controls; higher quality generally preserves more detail while increasing file size. Adobe and Adobe Lightroom Classic | A practical choice when compatibility matters. Export each new JPEG from the master to avoid repeated recompression. |
| WebP | Supports lossy and lossless modes, transparency, metadata, and color profiles. Google WebP documentation | Consider it for web delivery when the destination supports it; do not assume every recipient or editing workflow accepts it. |
| AVIF | Listed as an export format in Lightroom Classic. Adobe Lightroom Classic | Check compatibility first; Adobe warns support across apps and platforms is limited. Adobe’s supported-format information |
| JPEG XL | Listed as an export format in Lightroom Classic, including a lossless quality option. Adobe Lightroom Classic | Check compatibility first; Adobe warns support across apps and platforms is limited. Adobe’s supported-format information |
| TIFF or PNG | Listed among Lightroom Classic export formats; Adobe documents lossless ZIP or LZW compression for TIFF. Adobe Lightroom Classic | Useful when a workflow needs lossless data or an editing interchange file. They are not automatically the best choice for compact photographic delivery. |
Google’s WebP documentation, last updated August 7, 2025, reports WebP images as 25–34% smaller than comparable JPEG images at equivalent SSIM quality index. It also reports WebP lossless images as 26% smaller than PNG. These are format-level comparisons, not guaranteed savings for an individual wildlife photo; actual results vary with image content and settings. See Google’s WebP documentation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What JPEG quality should I use for wildlife photos?
No universal JPEG quality number is established for wildlife images. A close-up of fine plumage, a high-ISO image, and a scene with smooth sky may show compression differently. Export versions at incrementally different quality settings and compare both at 100% and at the intended display size. Choose the smallest file that still looks acceptable at that size, including in the details viewers are likely to notice.

Do not treat sharpening as a way to compensate for lost detail. Set output sharpening for the intended medium and resolution, then check for halos around high-contrast edges. Lightroom Classic’s export sharpening is additional to sharpening applied in Develop; consult Adobe’s export documentation for its available controls.
