To shrink a large video on a Windows PC, keep the original and encode a separate copy as MP4/H.264 with AAC audio, preserving the source frame rate and aspect ratio. Compression can reduce file size, but it cannot guarantee identical quality; check YouTube’s upload limits first, then adjust quality or bitrate only as much as needed.
Check whether you need to compress the video
YouTube’s stated upload limit is 256 GB or 12 hours, whichever is less. An unverified account is limited to uploads of 15 minutes or less; verify the account to upload longer videos. For files larger than 20 GB, YouTube recommends using an up-to-date browser. These are YouTube’s global upload rules; the cited guidance does not specify a separate limit for India. YouTube Help: upload videos longer than 15 minutes.

If your file is within the size and duration limits, compression is optional. A file can be large because it has a high bitrate, high resolution, a high frame rate, or a combination of those settings. Encoding a smaller copy is useful when the file exceeds the limit or would take too long to upload on your connection. Encoding happens on your PC; uploading uses your internet connection, so they are separate parts of the process.
Choose settings that balance size and quality
Use a compatible container and codecs
A practical general-purpose target is MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio. YouTube’s upload encoding guidance specifies MP4 and H.264, supports AAC-LC or Opus audio, and advises preserving the source frame rate. It recommends a 48 kHz audio sample rate. YouTube advises using editing software and H.264 when compressing a file larger than its 256 GB upload cap. H.264 is a sensible compatibility choice, not a promise that it will produce the smallest possible file at a given visible quality. YouTube also accepts HEVC and several other formats, so you do not need to convert every file simply because it is not MP4. Accepted video formats include MOV, MPEG, MP4, AVI, WMV, FLV, 3GPP, WebM, DNxHR, ProRes, CineForm, and HEVC. MP3, WAV, and PCM audio-only files cannot be uploaded as videos. YouTube Help: supported YouTube file formats.
Keep the original frame rate and aspect ratio
Preserving the source frame rate avoids changing how motion plays back and follows YouTube’s encoding guidance. Keep the original aspect ratio too. YouTube’s player adapts to different aspect ratios, with 16:9 standard on computers; YouTube advises against adding black bars or padding into the video. Lowering resolution is an option if you need a smaller file, but it reduces the maximum playback detail and should not be your first adjustment by default. YouTube Help: video aspect ratio and resolution.
Use bitrate recommendations as a reference, not a cap
YouTube says there is no required bitrate limit for uploads. Its recommendations are starting points, not a maximum file size or a guarantee of a particular result. The table below lists selected recommended bitrates for SDR video from YouTube’s encoding guidance; standard and high frame rates have different recommendations. YouTube Help: recommended upload encoding settings.

| SDR resolution | Standard frame rate | High frame rate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p | 8 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 1440p | 16 Mbps | 24 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K) | 35–45 Mbps | 53–68 Mbps |
HDR recommendations differ: YouTube lists 10 Mbps for 1080p standard frame rate and 15 Mbps for high frame rate; for 2160p, it lists 44–56 Mbps and 66–85 Mbps respectively. These figures are YouTube’s recommended upload bitrates, not required caps. YouTube Help: recommended upload encoding settings.
In an encoder, a lower bitrate generally creates a smaller file but increases the risk of visible artifacts; a higher bitrate retains more data but can leave the file large. A quality-based setting such as HandBrake’s Constant Quality control is a different rate-control method from choosing a bitrate. YouTube’s recommendations do not translate into one universally correct HandBrake quality value for every recording.
Compress the video with HandBrake on Windows
HandBrake is a free, open-source transcoder available for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Download it through the official HandBrake download page, rather than a third-party download site. Exact labels and layout can vary by HandBrake version, so use the controls by their function if your screen differs.

- Check the source. Note the video’s file size, duration, resolution, frame rate, and whether it is HDR. In File Explorer, right-click the file and choose Properties to check its size and duration where Windows provides those details. Keep the original untouched.
- Open the source in HandBrake. Choose the recording you want to compress and let HandBrake scan it. Select a general-purpose preset that is compatible with the source and your intended playback needs; do not choose a smaller resolution merely to chase a target size.
- Set the output container and video codec. Choose MP4 as the format and H.264 as the video encoder for a straightforward YouTube upload. If the preset uses different settings, adjust them deliberately rather than assuming every preset has the same output.
- Preserve picture geometry and motion. Keep the source resolution, aspect ratio, and frame rate unless you have a specific reason to change one. Avoid adding black bars. If you lower resolution or frame rate to reduce size, expect a corresponding change in playback detail or motion.
- Choose a rate-control approach. Use a quality-based control such as Constant Quality for a simpler workflow, or select bitrate encoding if you have a target bitrate in mind. For bitrate encoding, use YouTube’s recommendations as a reference for the matching resolution, SDR/HDR type, and frame-rate category—not as a guaranteed quality or file-size target. There is no single quality-slider value established as best for all stream recordings.
- Set the audio output. Use AAC audio for a broadly compatible MP4 upload; YouTube also accepts Opus. Its encoding guidance recommends a 48 kHz audio sample rate. Listen to the output to make sure the audio remains in sync and at an acceptable level.
- Choose a new destination and filename. Save the compressed copy somewhere with enough free disk space. Do not overwrite the original; keeping it gives you a way to retry with different settings if the result is too soft, blocky, or otherwise unsuitable.
- Start the encode and inspect the result. When encoding finishes, check the output file’s size and duration, then play sections from the beginning, middle, and end. Look for visible artifacts, unexpected cropping, audio problems, or a changed frame rate before uploading.
- Upload through YouTube Studio. If YouTube does not show higher playback resolutions immediately, that can be normal: processing higher qualities such as 1080p or 4K may take several hours. YouTube Help: troubleshoot video upload issues.
When hardware encoding is an option
HandBrake includes hardware-encoding presets for supported media engines. Its project notes that these presets may be disabled when the corresponding hardware or drivers are missing or outdated. Hardware encoding can prioritize speed, and its output need not match software encoding results exactly. HandBrake documentation: official presets.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTroubleshoot common compression problems
- The output is still over YouTube’s limit: Check that the file exceeds 256 GB or the video exceeds 12 hours, whichever limit applies. Try a lower bitrate or quality setting, or lower resolution if you can accept reduced playback detail. Keep the original and inspect each new encode.
- The picture looks blocky or smeared: The selected bitrate or quality target may be too low for the scene’s detail and motion. Re-encode from the original at a higher setting rather than recompressing the already compressed copy.
- The video looks stretched or has black bars: Check that the encoder preserved the source aspect ratio and did not add padding. YouTube’s player adapts to different aspect ratios; do not bake bars into the picture just to force 16:9.
- The audio is missing or out of sync: Check the selected audio track and codec, and play the entire output before upload. AAC is a suitable general-purpose choice for MP4; YouTube also supports Opus.
- The upload is rejected or cannot start: Confirm the duration and file size against YouTube’s limits, verify the account if the video is longer than 15 minutes, and use an up-to-date browser for a file larger than 20 GB. Check that the file is a supported video format.
- 1080p or 4K is not available after upload: YouTube may still be processing higher qualities. Allow time for processing; its troubleshooting guidance says higher resolutions can take several hours to appear.
- Encoding is slow: Hardware presets may be unavailable if the relevant hardware or drivers are not supported or up to date. A hardware path can be faster, but may produce different results from software encoding; check the output rather than assuming the two are identical.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is not just to upload a recording but to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a separate option: it plays uploaded videos as a 24/7 YouTube stream, rather than compressing a local file or broadcasting from a camera. Upload your video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The stream runs from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams each upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. Visit StreamNeo for details, or start the free day.
