You can also obtain it randomly from the Mystery Box, but the Easter egg route is deterministic: free Klaus, scan and charge the barrel at three pumps, enter the three rooftop symbols, then survive the Gauntlet trial.
What you get and what you need first
Completing the sequence awards the Necrofluid Gauntlet itself. The weapon is not merely a collection item: later Ashes of the Damned objectives require it to retrieve three keys, activate a mirror and power a four-location challenge. The quest route is therefore the reliable way to prepare for the rest of the map’s main Easter egg.

Before starting the Gauntlet step, advance the directed setup far enough to reach Ashwood, Vandorn Farm, Zarya Cosmodrome, Blackwater Lake and Janus Towers Plaza. The wider quest also expects Ol’ Tessie and her upgrades, although the Gauntlet portion specifically depends on Klaus, his Stabilizer Chip and the Aether Barrel.

Step 1: Free Klaus and obtain the Stabilizer Chip
Trigger Uber Klaus after Round 8
Play through the early rounds until Round 8 has ended. An Uber Klaus elite then spawns behind a truck northwest of Janus Towers Plaza. The appearance is round-gated, so searching the area earlier will not start this part of the quest.

Defeat Uber Klaus and collect the Stabilizer Chip he drops. Treat the chip as a quest item rather than ordinary salvage; without it, the cell interaction cannot proceed.
Open the cell in Ashwood
- Travel to Klaus’s cell in Ashwood with the Stabilizer Chip.
- Use the chip on the gate panel beside the cell.
- Throw a stun grenade at Klaus’s head.
- Wait for him to leave the cell. He becomes a controllable ally once the stun interaction completes.
If the gate panel does not accept the item, confirm that you picked up the Stabilizer Chip from the Uber Klaus encounter and that you are interacting with the cell panel, not the surrounding scenery. The stun grenade must hit Klaus’s head; a grenade that lands nearby may not advance the step.
Step 2: Scan and charge the Aether Barrel
Send Klaus to Support Systems
Find Klaus outside the cell and direct him to the broken wall panel at Support Systems in Zarya Cosmodrome. The panel is the scan point for the Aether Barrel. Stand inside the red circle while the scan runs; leaving the circle interrupts the process.
A failed scan does not permanently block the Easter egg. Start the next round and retry the same interaction. This round transition is the documented recovery method, so do not abandon the match merely because the first scan attempt fails.

Fill the barrel at all three pumps
After the scan, carry the barrel to the Power Pumps at Blackwater Lake, Ashwood and Vandorn Farm. Insert the barrel at each pump, then defend the extraction waves that appear around that location. The barrel is charged cumulatively, so it must visit all three pumps.
Use Vandorn Farm as the final pump. Once that delivery is complete, take the filled barrel to the basement room there rather than carrying it back through the map. The charged contents decay while you travel, making a direct route and quick transitions more important than stopping for optional activities.
Keeping the barrel charged
- Finish the extraction wave before removing the barrel from a pump.
- Move immediately toward the next location once the pump interaction ends.
- Plan the order so Vandorn Farm is last, avoiding an unnecessary cross-map trip after the final charge.
- When playing with others, assign one player to carry while the rest clear enemies and watch the route.
The charge-decay mechanic is the main risk in this section. If the barrel loses its contents during a slow transfer, return to the pump sequence and recharge it rather than proceeding to the cube with an incomplete delivery.

Find the symbol vantage point
Place the filled barrel in the cube in the Vandorn Farm basement and interact with the cube’s eye. The cube exposes three green-circle faces that accept symbols, but the correct symbols are not fixed across matches.

Use the jump pad route between Vandorn Farm and Janus Towers Plaza. While riding it, look at the rooftops for three glowing red symbols. They are the combination for your current match. Memorize them, write them down or capture a screenshot before landing. Relying on memory while fighting can lead to a wrong entry, especially when two symbols have similar outlines.
Enter the three-symbol combination
- Return to the cube in the Vandorn Farm basement.
- Interact with each of the three faces marked by a green circle.
- Rotate a face until it displays one of the three glowing rooftop symbols.
- Repeat for the remaining two faces.
- Set all three faces to the observed symbols, then interact with the cube’s eye again.
The order of the three symbols does not matter. Each of the three faces simply needs to show one member of the rooftop set. If the eye does not accept the combination, revisit the jump-pad route and check every rooftop symbol; one missed symbol or a look-alike entry is more likely than an order problem.
Step 4: Claim the Gauntlet and survive the lockdown
Start the trial
When the cube accepts the symbols, it awards the Necrofluid Gauntlet and immediately starts a trial in the basement. Zombies enter the room and colored orbs appear. This is not a safe inventory screen: prepare your ammunition and positioning before making the final eye interaction.

Destroy every orb with the spike
- Equip the Necrofluid Gauntlet and aim its spike at a colored orb.
- Shoot the orb with the spike.
- Reload or use the Gauntlet’s spike-recall action to bring the spike back.
- Repeat the shot-and-recall cycle for every orb.
- Continue until the lockdown ends, then leave the basement.
The spike is the required damage method for the orbs. Firing ordinary weapons at them does not replace the Gauntlet interaction. Because the spike must be recalled between shots, avoid throwing it into a crowded group without a clear recovery path. Clear nearby zombies first when possible, then make each orb a deliberate target.

Successfully clearing the lockdown confirms the Wonder Weapon unlock. If the room remains sealed, look for an orb hidden behind the crowd or at a different elevation and continue the spike cycle rather than restarting the quest.

Obtaining the weapon completes this sub-objective, but it is also a required tool for the map’s remaining Easter egg stages.
Retrieve the three randomized keys
The Gauntlet pulls the Nightbird, Bruin and Terrapin keys from their randomized map spawns. Their locations can change between matches, so search the active spawn areas for the interaction prompt instead of following a fixed location list. The Gauntlet’s retrieval action is what removes each key from its spawn.

Activate the mirror
After Wisp Tea activates the mirror, shoot the mirror with the Necrofluid Gauntlet. This is a separate weapon check from the basement trial; carrying the weapon is not enough unless you use it on the activated mirror.

Power the four-location challenge
Later, the Gauntlet powers a challenge sequence at four locations. Keep it available after collecting the keys and activating the mirror, because replacing it or switching to a different weapon does not satisfy those interactions. The complete chain eventually leads to the Veytharion fight.
Serum ingredients for the wider quest
The documented serum ingredient list contains six items:
- Powder of the Forgotten
- Widow’s Lantern
- Human Bones
- Ravager Eyes
- Hoard Husk Chunks
- Mysterious Limb
These ingredients belong to the broader Ashes of the Damned progression rather than the Gauntlet’s four-step acquisition sequence. Collecting them does not substitute for charging the barrel or solving the cube.

Solo and co-op planning
The sequence works as a deterministic route for either a solo player or a squad. There is no authoritative completion-rate or average-time statistic, so team size should be chosen for control and safety rather than an assumed percentage advantage.

In either mode, communicate the symbol sequence before returning to the basement and keep the player with the barrel moving on a direct route. Co-op does not remove the randomized symbols or the charge-decay rule; it only gives the squad more ways to defend the objective.
Troubleshooting checklist
Uber Klaus is missing
- Confirm that Round 8 has ended; the elite appears only after that gate.
- Search behind the truck northwest of Janus Towers Plaza.
- Defeat the elite and pick up the Stabilizer Chip before visiting the cell.
The cell will not open
- Insert the Stabilizer Chip into the gate panel in Ashwood.
- Use a stun grenade on Klaus’s head, not merely near his feet.
- Wait for the exit animation before trying to direct him.
The Support Systems scan fails
- Place Klaus at the broken wall panel in Zarya Cosmodrome.
- Remain inside the red circle for the complete scan.
- If it fails, begin the next round and repeat the scan.
The barrel runs out before the next pump
- Use a direct route and avoid optional stops while carrying it.
- Finish each pump’s extraction defense before moving on.
- Keep Vandorn Farm for the final pump so the basement delivery follows immediately.
The cube rejects the symbols
- Ride the jump pad between Vandorn Farm and Janus Towers Plaza again.
- Check all three glowing red rooftop symbols; the set is randomized per match.
- Match one symbol to each green-circle face. Entry order is irrelevant.
The lockdown does not end
- Search the basement for a remaining colored orb.
- Shoot each orb with the Gauntlet’s spike.
- Reload or recall the spike after every shot so it can be used again.
Rewards for finishing the full map Easter egg
The Necrofluid Gauntlet is the direct reward for the cube sequence. Completing the full Ashes of the Damned Easter egg adds the Oorah! Operator skin for Dempsey, 10,000 XP and a map-themed Calling Card, as reported by PCGamesN’s Danielle Rose. Those rewards apply to the complete map quest, not just the basement lockdown.
Because round gates, randomized key and symbol locations and seasonal patches can alter execution details, verify the current control binding for your platform and treat your own rooftop-symbol observations as authoritative for that match. The fixed logic remains: free Klaus, scan and charge the barrel, decode the three symbols, then clear the spike-orb trial.
