Diablo 4 Season 15: Season of Hell’s Legacy has a five-quest introductory storyline. Follow the quests in order from Tarsarak to the Imperial Library, complete three Waking Nightmare branches tied to Baal, Mephisto, and Diablo, then finish Legacy of Hope to place the final Soul Splinter and choose the Prime Evil power you want to carry. The campaign teaches the season’s Waking Nightmare activities and starts the Splinter reputation and War Plans progression that continues after the story.
You will need the Diablo IV game with Season 15 content available on your character. The complete sequence is Refuge From The Memories, The Horadrim’s Fate, The Burning Shepherd, The Brother’s Keeper, and Legacy of Hope.

What the Season 15 questline unlocks
Season 15 is called Season of Hell’s Legacy. Its seasonal systems revolve around Waking Nightmares, Soul Splinters, and Prime Evil powers. The introductory storyline contains five main quests and ends at the Imperial Library.

The three middle quests take you through Nightmare versions of locations associated with the three Prime Evils:

Completing all three branches gives you the three Splinters. The final quest has you install the last Splinter beside the others, speak with Deckard Cain, and select one Splinter. That selection unlocks the associated Prime Evil power. Afterward, activities connected to the selected Splinter build reputation, while War Plans provide additional modifiers and upgrades.
Quest order at a glance
- Refuge From The Memories: Investigate a cloaked stranger in Tarsarak and meet Deckard Cain at the Imperial Library.
- The Horadrim’s Fate: Search for Tal Rasha, clear the Worldstone Keep Waking Nightmare, defeat the Echo of Baal, and claim Destruction.
- The Burning Shepherd: Find Sankekur, assemble Khalim’s Will, clear the Durance of Hate Waking Nightmare, defeat the Echo of Mephisto, and claim Hatred.
- The Brother’s Keeper: Find Aidan in Scosglen, clear the Diablo Labyrinth Waking Nightmare, defeat the Echo of Diablo, and claim Terror.
- Legacy of Hope: Return to the Imperial Library, place the final Splinter, and choose a Splinter to activate its Prime Evil power.
1. Refuge From The Memories
The opening quest starts in Tarsarak. It introduces the seasonal storyline before sending you to the Imperial Library and Deckard Cain.
Walkthrough
- Travel to Tarsarak.
- Enter Kuhuthi’s Tavern.
- Investigate the cloaked stranger inside the tavern.
- Defeat the demons that appear during the investigation.
- Speak with Deckard Cain after the fight.
- Meet Cain at the Imperial Library to complete the opening stage and begin the next quest.
There is no Splinter choice in this first quest. Its purpose is to establish the investigation and point you toward the library, which becomes the hub for the beginning and end of the introductory line.

2. The Horadrim’s Fate: Baal’s Worldstone Keep branch
The Horadrim’s Fate sends you into the first major Waking Nightmare and awards the Splinter of Destruction, associated with Baal.
Find Tal Rasha
- Meet Deckard Cain at the Imperial Library.
- Search for Tal Rasha in the Fractured Peaks.
- Defeat Tal Rasha when you find him.
Clear the Worldstone Keep Waking Nightmare
- Enter the Diablo II Worldstone Keep Waking Nightmare.
- Fight through the activity until you reach the Ancients.
- Defeat the Ancients.
- Pursue the Echo of Baal.
- Defeat the Echo of Baal.
- Claim the Splinter of Destruction.
This branch teaches the Baal-themed Nightmare route. The Splinter is awarded after the Echo of Baal encounter, so make sure you collect it before leaving the activity or moving on to the next objective.
3. The Burning Shepherd: Mephisto’s Durance of Hate branch
The Burning Shepherd moves the story to Hawezar and culminates in the Splinter of Hatred, associated with Mephisto. This route has an additional objective: assembling Khalim’s Will before you can enter the Durance.

Locate Sankekur and open the Nightmare
- Return to Deckard Cain.
- Travel to Hawezar to find Sankekur.
- Defeat Sankekur. This opens the path to the Durance of Hate Waking Nightmare.
Assemble Khalim’s Will in Travincal
- Enter Travincal.
- Collect all four components of Khalim’s Will.
- Use the completed set of components to open the entrance to the Durance.
The quest requires all four components. If the Durance entrance is unavailable, check that every component has been collected and that you used them to open the entrance rather than simply reaching Travincal.

- Proceed through the Durance of Hate.
- Reach Level 3.
- Defeat the Echo of Mephisto.
- Collect the Splinter of Hatred from Sankekur.
The Splinter of Hatred is the reward for this branch. You do not select a Prime Evil power here; the power selection happens after the Diablo branch, during Legacy of Hope.
4. The Brother’s Keeper: Diablo’s Labyrinth branch
The final major branch takes place in Scosglen and awards the Splinter of Terror, associated with Diablo.
Find Aidan in the Strand
- Travel to the Strand in Scosglen.
- Find Aidan.
- Defeat Aidan to gain access to the Diablo Labyrinth Waking Nightmare.
Handle Diablo’s invulnerability correctly
- Enter the Diablo Labyrinth Waking Nightmare.
- Fight through the labyrinth until the Diablo encounter.
- When Diablo becomes invulnerable, destroy the Portals of Darkness.
- Continue damaging Diablo after the portals are destroyed.
- Repeat the portal step whenever the invulnerability mechanic returns.
- Defeat the Echo of Diablo.
- Speak with Aidan.
- Collect the Splinter of Terror.
Attacking an invulnerable Diablo without removing the Portals of Darkness will not advance the encounter. Treat the portals as the required objective whenever the boss cannot take damage.
5. Legacy of Hope: choose your Prime Evil power
Legacy of Hope is the conclusion of the introductory storyline. By this point you should have the Splinters of Destruction, Hatred, and Terror from the three Nightmare branches.

- Return to the Imperial Library.
- Place the final Splinter beside the other Splinters.
- Speak with Deckard Cain.
- Choose one Splinter.
Choosing a Splinter unlocks its associated Prime Evil power. The three choices correspond to the three rewards you collected: Destruction for Baal, Hatred for Mephisto, and Terror for Diablo. The introductory questline is complete once the choice is made and the system unlocks.

Use the table below when planning the route or checking which reward came from a particular Nightmare.

The story presents these branches in the order listed above. The power decision is deferred until all three Splinters are in place during Legacy of Hope.
Rewards from the introductory storyline
Quest rewards
The quests provide experience and gold while teaching the Waking Nightmare activities. The major storyline rewards are the three Soul Splinters:
- Splinter of Destruction: earned from the Echo of Baal branch.
- Splinter of Hatred: earned from the Echo of Mephisto branch.
- Splinter of Terror: earned from the Echo of Diablo branch.
Prime Evil power
Completing Legacy of Hope lets your character bear one chosen Splinter’s associated Prime Evil power. Season 15 describes Soul Splinters as abilities with benefits and drawbacks, so the choice is part of the seasonal build and progression system rather than merely a cosmetic reward.
Seasonal progression after the story
The introductory line is the starting point, not the end of Season 15 progression. Continue with activities tied to the Splinter you selected to build reputation. Use War Plans for additional modifiers and upgrades. The season also ties progression rewards to the Season of Hell’s Legacy Reliquary.

- Place the final Splinter, speak with Cain, and choose a Splinter.
- Continue with the chosen Splinter’s activities, reputation, and War Plans.
Common progression problems and fixes
The next quest is not advancing
Check the immediate objective rather than skipping ahead. The line requires specific handoffs: Cain at the Imperial Library, Tal Rasha in the Fractured Peaks, Sankekur in Hawezar, Aidan in Scosglen, and Cain again at the Imperial Library. Return to the named character or location shown by the active quest before entering another Nightmare.
The Durance entrance will not open
Confirm that you defeated Sankekur, collected all four components of Khalim’s Will in Travincal, and used them to open the entrance. Reaching Travincal alone does not satisfy the opening step.
Diablo cannot be damaged
This is the encounter mechanic in the Diablo Labyrinth Waking Nightmare. Destroy every active Portal of Darkness while Diablo is invulnerable, then resume the boss fight.
The Prime Evil power has not unlocked
Defeating the three Echoes and collecting the three Splinters is not the final activation step. Return to the Imperial Library, place the final Splinter beside the others, speak with Deckard Cain, and complete the Splinter choice in Legacy of Hope.
What to do after choosing a Splinter
Once the Prime Evil power is unlocked, use the seasonal activities associated with that chosen Splinter to continue building reputation. War Plans extend the system with modifiers and upgrades, while the Season of Hell’s Legacy Reliquary provides additional seasonal progression rewards. The five-quest story therefore serves two purposes: it grants the three Splinters and teaches the activities that power the rest of the season.
