What the Burlap Challenge requires

- Value condition: maximize each dress’s sale value. Workmanship, material, labour, quality and prestige all affect the result, while accessory spending increases the dress’s cost.
The practical sequence is therefore: complete three commissions, switch to off-the-rack construction, build one burlap design, sell it, then repeat with two different designs.
Unlock off-the-rack construction first
Finish the first three commissions
If the off-the-rack option is unavailable, the usual reason is that the first three commissions are not all finished. The challenge cannot be completed by making commission garments before that unlock; it specifically calls for off-the-rack dresses.

Work through those opening jobs in order and verify that each one is marked complete. Do not assume that accepting a commission, delivering a garment, or earning payment is enough if the game still shows an unfinished brief.
Read the live brief before using burlap on later commissions
The Burlap Challenge is separate from ordinary commissions. A commission can require a particular colour, a fabric share, style tags, an accessory count, trim, or a quality level. Those requirements can conflict with burlap’s effects. For any commission, read the current requirement bars first and use burlap only where it helps. Add complementary materials when burlap alone cannot satisfy the brief.
Older examples of full-burlap solutions, including build-specific “Tomb Raider” or “Not Haughty” garments, should not override the current in-game requirements. Patches can change values and thresholds, so the live brief takes precedence over an old example.
Know what burlap does before choosing a pattern

The broad penalties explain why this challenge is a resource-and-requirements puzzle rather than a normal “use the best fabric” exercise. Free material removes one expense, but it does not remove the need to control silhouette, workmanship, accessories and prestige.

These are starting points, not a guaranteed best combination. The challenge does not publish one fixed winning pattern because the value of a design depends on the accessories you choose, your cutting and sewing quality, the resulting style tags and the dress’s prestige.

Accessories give you more ways to distinguish three burlap dresses and to shape their style profile. Lace, piping, brooches, jewels, bows and buttons are all examples cited in the guide. A pattern with several useful placement points gives you more control than a minimalist pattern that leaves little room for differentiation.

- Sew carefully. Sewing quality also affects the payout, so rushing a free-fabric dress can still cost you gold at sale time.
- Add only justified accessories. Consider lace, piping, a brooch, jewels, bows or buttons. Compare each item’s price with the sale return you expect rather than assuming more decoration is always better.
- Finish and sell the dress. Record the pattern, accessories and result so the next two garments are clearly different.
- Repeat twice. Use burlap as the only fabric for both remaining dresses, but vary the design so all three qualify as unique.
Because the game’s challenge wording is “three unique” dresses, the safest practice is to change more than one visible element between garments: use a different bodice or skirt pairing, alter sleeve treatment, and change the accessory arrangement. Reusing one pattern is not automatically disallowed by the supplied rules, but three visibly distinct builds remove doubt.
Three practical build templates
These templates are planning examples, not guaranteed maximum-value recipes. Their purpose is to make the three designs distinct while using the patterns and accessories highlighted in the guide.

How to maximise each dress’s sale value
Protect workmanship first
Free fabric is not a licence to accept sloppy construction. Accurate cutting and careful sewing are major value drivers. If a choice is between one more accessory and a cleaner garment, protect the workmanship first; an accessory cannot reliably compensate for avoidable construction mistakes.
- Take time on cutting so pieces match the selected pattern.
- Work carefully through sewing actions rather than treating the dress as disposable.
- Keep the build simple enough that you can complete it accurately.
Use accessories as a costed decision
Accessories can make the three garments more distinct and may help a desired style profile, but they are not free. Their prices become part of the dress’s cost. Evaluate each proposed item with two questions:
- Does it create a meaningful visual or style difference from the other challenge dresses?
- Is the expected increase in sale value worth the accessory’s gold cost?
Lace, piping, brooches, jewels, bows and buttons are all valid options. The best choice depends on the design and the value feedback you receive; no supplied rule says that one of these accessory types is always superior.
Account for prestige as well as material
Sale value depends on more than the fabric’s purchase price. The community FAQ describes the relevant drivers as material and labour, quality, and prestige. Burlap contributes a zero-gold material cost, but the final payout can still be weak if workmanship, quality or prestige are poor.

For ordinary commissions
Do not automatically copy the challenge strategy into a commission. A client may require a colour other than burlap’s Brown tag, a specific fabric-share percentage, style tags that burlap penalises, a minimum or maximum accessory count, a trim, or a quality threshold. Read the live requirement bars, then decide whether burlap should be the main fabric, a partial material, or omitted.
The key distinction is simple: the challenge demands burlap-only construction; commissions demand whatever combination satisfies their current brief. Mixing materials can be correct for a commission even though it would fail the challenge.
Use free burlap as an emergency money source
If your funds are low, a basic burlap off-the-rack dress can provide emergency cash because the fabric costs 0 gold per metre. This is a recovery method, not a guarantee of the best late-game return.

- Choose a straightforward pattern you can cut and sew accurately.
- Assign burlap to all fabric pieces so no material purchase is required.
- Skip unnecessary accessories or add only low-cost items whose value contribution justifies them.
- Finish the garment carefully; poor workmanship can reduce the payout.
- Sell the dress and use the recovered gold for the next commission or build.
Because accessories still cost gold, an emergency dress should normally prioritise reliable workmanship over elaborate decoration. Once funds recover, you can test more ambitious designs without risking money needed for required commissions.
Troubleshooting the challenge
Off-the-rack construction is missing
Recheck the opening progression. The unlock requires completion of the first three commissions. If one remains incomplete, continue that commission before looking for a burlap-specific solution.
The dress is not counted
Inspect every fabric component. The requirement is burlap only as fabric, not “mostly burlap.” Accessories can be any type and quantity, but a non-burlap bodice, skirt, sleeve or other fabric piece can invalidate the garment.
The three dresses look too similar
Make the next dress visibly different in pattern pairing and accessory arrangement. Changing only one small decoration leaves unnecessary uncertainty; vary the silhouette and several design details together.

Check the variables that directly affect the payout: cutting accuracy, sewing quality, accessory cost, finished quality and prestige. Burlap’s free price removes material expense but does not offset every style penalty or a costly accessory plan.
