To finish the main story in How to Fish, progress through five community-named stages in order: Lighthouse, Forest, Desert, Rocks, then Volcano. On each island, complete the quest, trigger and defeat its boss, and return the required trophy to the relevant character. A boss kill by itself does not unlock the next stop.
The route below reflects community guides, not an official developer walkthrough. Prices, map markers, and some encounter details may change or remain uncertain, so check the current game when a detail does not match your build.

How many islands are in How to Fish?
Community guides identify five main story stages: Lighthouse, Forest, Desert, Rocks, and Volcano. The Steam listing describes the game as a physics-based fishing simulator about working your way home after crashing onto an island; it lists an August 20, 2026 release date. Steam store listing

How to unlock each island
Keep quest items and boss remains until you have used them for their intended trigger or returned them to the quest giver. The progression guides identify those handoffs—not merely catching or defeating a boss—as the important gates.
1. Lighthouse: get the boat keys
- Follow the Lighthouse Keeper’s request and obtain a beer.
- Give the beer to the keeper. Keep the empty can he returns; it is the trigger for the Spider Crab encounter.
- Defeat the Spider Crab and keep its shell or trophy.
- Return the trophy to advance the quest and obtain the boat keys.
- Acquire the radar and a working engine before setting out. The community guide warns that the radar is easy to overlook.

2. Forest: trade leeches for boss bait
- Find the woman beside the lake and collect three ground leeches for her quest.
- Trade the leeches for Modified Leech bait.
- Use that bait to summon and defeat the Giant Piranha.
- Return the Giant Piranha skeleton to unlock the next marker.
The leeches are a quest requirement, not just ordinary catches: keep them until the trade is complete. island progression guide
3. Desert: get carrot bait and defeat Pufferfish
- Find the tourist on the beach.
- Trade one eligible endangered fish—Needlefish, Bowlfish, or Seahorse—for carrot bait.
- Use the carrot bait to trigger and defeat Pufferfish.
- Return Pufferfish’s fin to receive the Rocks coordinates.
The Blue Shark encounter and grill-lighting sequence are described as optional side content, not a requirement for the main island route. island progression guide

4. Rocks: use Tuna’s body to summon Albatross
- Buy a Professional Boss Lure, then use it to catch Tuna.
- Defeat Tuna, but do not sell its body.
- Drop the Tuna body on a grassy patch to trigger Albatross.
- Defeat Albatross and return its head to the man hiding in the shop for Volcano coordinates.

5. Volcano: carry Bowhead Whale’s body to the volcano
- Feed five fish to the scientist to earn the Fish Bucket.
- Use the Fish Bucket to catch Bowhead Whale.
- Keep the whale’s body intact and carry it up the wooden plank path to the volcano to trigger the final boss.
- Defeat the final boss and return its fin to the scientist for the black boat keys and ending.
The body must be carried to the volcano as part of the trigger, so do not sell or otherwise lose it first. island progression guide

What unlocks the next island?
Return the named boss trophy or remains to the relevant quest giver. The community route describes this as the progression gate at each stage; defeating the boss without completing the handoff is not enough. Before leaving an island, check that the quest has advanced and that you have the travel requirements the game requests.

Do not rely on older island-skip instructions. The community progression guide reports that Patch 1.0.5 fixed travel to locked islands. Follow the quest route and unlock each marker in sequence; the inspected sources do not establish a current supported way to bypass those gates. island progression guide

Mandatory story steps versus optional content
- Main route: Complete each island quest, trigger and defeat its story boss, then return the specified trophy or remains.
- Desert side route: Blue Shark and the grill-lighting sequence are optional in the community guide; they are not listed as gates to Rocks.
- Quest-critical items: Keep the Empty Beer Can, the leech-derived Modified Leech bait until used, Tuna’s body, and Bowhead Whale’s intact body until their triggers are complete.

Steam lists How to Fish for Windows and identifies single-player and online co-op, describing the game as a 1–4 player title.
