The Pale Elf is Astarion’s companion quest, and it ends with a confrontation against his former master, Cazador Szarr, beneath Szarr Palace. Keep Astarion recruited, reach Cazador’s dungeon, use the Szarr Family Ring to open the main crypt gate, and prepare for a ritual fight in which Astarion can be removed from combat for three turns. After Cazador dies, you must decide whether Astarion completes the Rite of Ascension and separately decide what happens to the imprisoned vampire spawn.
This is a spoiler-heavy walkthrough. The final choice changes Astarion’s status, the fate of thousands of fictional souls, and potentially whether he remains in your party.

What The Pale Elf is and when it ends
The Pale Elf follows Astarion’s history as a vampire spawn and his fear of Cazador Szarr. Its journal wording can change according to your earlier story decisions, so not every objective appears in the same order for every playthrough. The consistent destination is Cazador’s dungeon beneath Szarr Palace in Baldur’s Palace.

You do not complete the quest by merely finding the palace. The decisive sequence is the descent into the dungeon, the fight in the Grand Chamber, and the conversation immediately afterward. Astarion’s final status depends on what you do in that conversation, not simply on whether you defeated Cazador.

Before you enter Szarr Palace
Keep Astarion recruited
Astarion must still be available as a companion for his personal storyline to reach its intended conclusion. If you have not recruited him, or if an earlier decision has removed him permanently, the companion quest cannot proceed in the same way. Keep him in camp or in the active party while you advance the story through the acts, and speak with him when new camp conversations become available.
Decide whether he will be present for the confrontation
The ritual encounter is especially important if Astarion is in the active party. Cazador can seize and bind him to the ritual star, creating a three-turn emergency in the middle of the battle. Bringing Astarion lets you resolve that danger directly and gives the post-fight dialogue its full context. If he is not in the active party, the exact encounter conditions and dialogue can differ, so do not assume that a party arrangement from another playthrough will produce the same scene.
Make a manual save
Save before entering the dungeon and again before triggering the ritual fight. The post-battle conversation contains mutually exclusive outcomes, and the result of refusing to help can include Astarion leaving permanently. A separate save lets you examine the consequences without replaying the approach through the palace.
How to reach Cazador’s dungeon
- Enter Szarr Palace. Explore the palace until you find the route leading below it. The quest’s final battle is not in the palace rooms above; it is in the dungeon beneath the building.
- Find the Szarr Family Ring. The main crypt gate requires this ring. Keep it available when you reach the locked entrance; ordinary lockpicking is not the critical solution for this gate.
- Pass through the crypt gate. Once the ring opens the gate, continue into the dungeon’s connected areas.
- Search the prison area if you want the full story. The dungeon contains cells holding vampire spawn connected to Cazador’s ritual. The prisoners are not simply a lockpicking puzzle. Their eventual fate is decided through Cazador’s staff and the dialogue after the fight.
- Continue to the Grand Chamber. From the prison section, the route to the Grand Chamber is unlocked. Cazador waits there, and entering the chamber begins the confrontation.
The prison is optional exploration before the battle, but it is not irrelevant. The people inside are the souls that the ritual is meant to consume, and the post-fight decision can release, kill, or leave them imprisoned depending on your dialogue choices.
Prepare for the Cazador fight
The most important preparation is not a particular item or damage type; it is a plan for the opening turns. If Astarion is present, Cazador can remove him from the fight immediately. Your party then has only three turns to respond before the ritual advances too far for the same resolution.
- Place your party deliberately. Keep characters who can reach the ritual star quickly near a route toward Astarion, while still leaving room to attack Cazador.
- Bring a reliable Help option. The Help action can free Astarion from the ritual star. Ensure at least one character can reach him without spending all three turns crossing the chamber.
- Plan an alternative interruption. Killing one of the other vampire spawn interrupts the ritual. This is a real tactical option, but it prevents Astarion from ascending in that encounter, so do not treat it as a consequence-free shortcut.
- Keep healing and defensive actions available. The opening turns may be spent rescuing Astarion rather than dealing damage. A character who can survive while moving through the chamber gives you more flexibility.
- Save immediately before entering. The countdown is easy to underestimate on a first attempt. A pre-battle save lets you test your route without losing the entire palace sequence.
The game does not require you to commit to Astarion’s final choice before the battle. Your priority in the chamber is to survive, stop the ritual from completing against your wishes, and defeat Cazador. The moral decision comes afterward.
The ritual fight: the three-turn emergency
What happens when Astarion is captured
When Astarion is in the active party, Cazador can subdue him and bind him to one of the ritual positions on the floor. Astarion is then unavailable as a normal combatant while the ritual progresses. The encounter gives you three turns to free him with Help or interrupt the ritual by killing another vampire spawn.

Spending the first round attacking Cazador while nobody moves toward Astarion can leave you without enough time to rescue him. Assign one character to the rescue immediately and use the remaining characters to control threats or damage Cazador.
Option one: use Help to free Astarion
- Identify which character can reach Astarion most quickly.
- Move that character toward the ritual star without waiting for a better attack opportunity.
- Use Help when the character is in range. The action frees Astarion from the binding.
- Return Astarion to the fight and continue attacking Cazador or managing the remaining spawn.
Freeing Astarion preserves the possibility of the Rite of Ascension later. It does not force you to support that rite; it simply keeps the post-fight choice available.
Option two: kill another vampire spawn
You can interrupt the ritual by killing one of the other spawn participating in it. This may be the faster solution if reaching Astarion is unsafe or your party is already positioned beside another ritual participant. The cost is permanent for this encounter: killing a spawn stops the ritual and removes Astarion’s opportunity to ascend afterward.
Use this option when your priority is stopping the rite regardless of Astarion’s later preference. Do not describe it as a way to obtain the same result as Help. The two actions change what Astarion can do once Cazador is dead.
Continue fighting after the interruption
Once Astarion is free, or the ritual is interrupted by killing a spawn, keep your party focused on ending Cazador’s threat. The battle still contains ordinary combat risks, so avoid scattering every character across the room after the emergency is solved. Consolidate around the remaining enemies, keep vulnerable characters protected, and use your strongest available actions to finish the encounter.
If a first attempt fails, reload the pre-entry save and change only the opening sequence. A faster rescue route, a different character assigned to Help, or an earlier decision to interrupt the ritual can make the difference without requiring a completely different party.
What to do after Cazador dies
Defeating Cazador opens the decisive conversation with Astarion. You have three broad responses: help him complete the Rite of Ascension, persuade him to stop, or refuse to help. The wording of individual dialogue checks can vary with your story and relationship state, and no single persuasion threshold applies to every playthrough.
Help Astarion complete the Rite
If you support the rite, Astarion becomes a Vampire Ascendant. The ritual sacrifices the participating vampire spawn and the imprisoned souls tied to Cazador’s plan. The game describes the scale as 7,000 souls; that number is fictional story material, not a real-world statistic.
This is the power-focused outcome. Astarion escapes Cazador’s control and gains the ascendant status, but the transformation requires the deaths represented by the ritual. Choose it only if that consequence matches the character and story you want to play.
Persuade Astarion not to ascend
If you convince him to stop, Astarion remains a vampire spawn and is free of Cazador. The rite is not completed, so the prisoners’ fate becomes a separate decision in the scene. They can be freed, killed, or left imprisoned, depending on the dialogue outcome and the choice you make with the staff.
In the documented freed-spawn branch, the released spawn head toward the Underdark. Astarion’s refusal to ascend does not automatically decide what happens to them; make that choice deliberately after the argument about the rite.
Refuse to help
Refusing assistance is not the same as persuading Astarion. In the documented branch, he can leave the party permanently when you deny him help. Treat this as a party-breaking outcome, not as a neutral way to postpone the decision.
Recommended Free Tools
The prisoners can remain locked up in that branch. If keeping Astarion is important to your run, make a save before selecting a refusal line and consider whether you are prepared for his departure.
Astarion’s outcome and the prisoners’ fate are separate decisions
The most common mistake is treating the conversation as one all-or-nothing choice. First determine whether Astarion ascends. Then resolve what happens to the captives. If he remains a spawn, you still have to choose whether to free, kill, or leave the prisoners. Their outcome is not automatically fixed by sparing Astarion.
| Decision after Cazador’s defeat | Astarion’s outcome | Prisoners’ outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Help with the Rite of Ascension | Becomes a Vampire Ascendant | Participating spawn and imprisoned souls are sacrificed as part of the ritual |
| Persuade him not to perform the rite | Remains a vampire spawn and is free of Cazador | You choose their fate in the scene: free, kill, or leave them imprisoned |
| Refuse assistance | Can leave the party permanently in the documented branch | Can remain locked up in that branch |
Choosing the ending for your playthrough
If you want Astarion’s power
Keep him available during the fight, rescue him with Help if Cazador captures him, defeat Cazador, and then support the Rite of Ascension. Remember that killing another spawn to interrupt the ritual removes this option for the encounter.
If you want Astarion free but still a spawn
Do not kill a ritual spawn as your emergency interruption if you want the full post-fight choice. Free Astarion with Help, defeat Cazador, and persuade him to stop. Afterward, make a separate decision about the prisoners rather than assuming they are automatically released.

If you are role-playing a hard refusal
Refusing to help communicates that the party will not participate in the rite, but it may cost you Astarion permanently. Save first, because the documented result can remove him from the party. This branch is best treated as a deliberate character decision, not as a test of whether the game will let you change your mind later.

Common problems and how to recover
“The crypt gate will not open.”
Check that you have the Szarr Family Ring. The main dungeon gate requires it; ordinary lockpicking is not the intended solution. Once the gate opens, continue through the dungeon rather than searching the palace above for another entrance to the Grand Chamber.
“Astarion disappeared from combat.”
Cazador has likely bound him to the ritual star. Count the remaining turns and use Help as soon as a character reaches him. If reaching him is impossible in time, kill another participating spawn to interrupt the ritual, understanding that this removes Astarion’s ascension opportunity in that encounter.
“I stopped the ritual, but the ascension dialogue is unavailable.”
That is expected if you interrupted the rite by killing another spawn. Reload and use Help instead if you want Astarion to retain the option to ascend after Cazador’s defeat.

Astarion’s decision and the prisoners’ fate are separate. Continue the scene and use the available staff and dialogue choices to decide whether the captives are freed, killed, or left imprisoned.
“Astarion left after the conversation.”
That can happen after refusing to help him in the documented branch. Reload the save made before the dialogue if you want to pursue another outcome; the result is not a temporary camp departure.
Is there a required persuasion score?
No single check value should be promised for every party. The available dialogue and approval context can change with earlier decisions, relationship state, and the way you handle the confrontation. Save before the conversation, read each response carefully, and choose the line that matches the outcome you want rather than relying on an unverified universal threshold.
Story detail: the scale of Cazador’s ritual
The quest presents the rite as consuming 7,000 imprisoned souls. This is a fictional count used to communicate the scale of Cazador’s plan. It is not a statistic about real people, real-world vampire folklore, or the game’s player base.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I complete The Pale Elf without bringing Astarion to the fight?
Astarion’s presence changes the ritual encounter, and the documented three-turn rescue mechanic applies when he is in the active party. Other party arrangements can produce different conditions, so do not assume the same dialogue or combat sequence.
Does killing a vampire spawn make Astarion ascend later?
No. Killing one of the other spawn interrupts the ritual but removes Astarion’s opportunity to ascend in that encounter. Use Help instead if you want to preserve that choice.
Are the imprisoned spawn automatically freed if Astarion stays a spawn?
No. After persuading Astarion not to ascend, you still decide the prisoners’ fate separately. They can be freed, killed, or left imprisoned depending on the scene’s choices.
