Compare the RPM for livestreams and regular videos in YouTube Analytics using the same date range, then check each format’s views and revenue sources. RPM is creator revenue per 1,000 views after YouTube’s share—not an ad-only rate—so a difference does not, by itself, show that livestreams or regular videos earn more from ads.
What RPM tells you—and what it does not
YouTube defines RPM as creator revenue per 1,000 views after YouTube’s revenue share. It can include advertising, YouTube Premium, channel memberships, Super Chat and Super Stickers. RPM also counts views that did not generate revenue, so a larger share of unmonetized views can lower RPM even if total revenue has not fallen. YouTube’s ad revenue analytics guidance explains the distinction.

CPM is different: it describes advertiser spending per 1,000 ad impressions before YouTube’s share. It is not a like-for-like substitute for creator RPM. Compare RPM with RPM, and examine ad revenue separately if the question is specifically about ads.

- Choose one reporting window. Use the same start and end dates for both format groups. A comparison across different periods may reflect seasonal demand, audience changes or other shifts rather than format.
- Compare like with like. In YouTube Analytics, review content performance and RPM for livestreams and replays versus regular videos. YouTube’s revenue reporting guidance for Android describes performance and RPM reporting across content formats. Where practical, compare similar topics, audiences and publishing circumstances.
- Check views and revenue sources. Record the view totals alongside RPM, then inspect the revenue-source breakdown. YouTube counts a view when playback starts across long-form video on demand and live formats. The total RPM figure can combine ads, Premium and fan funding, so a different mix of sources can produce a different total.
- Separate ad revenue when needed. If you want to know whether ad earnings differ, use the revenue-source details rather than treating total RPM as ad RPM. YouTube’s live monetization guidance says the Live filter can show ad-revenue breakdowns for livestreams and replays.
- Note live monetization settings. Record whether automatic or manual mid-roll ads were enabled and whether settings changed during the selected period. Also note whether relevant channel features, such as memberships or Super Chat, were enabled and available.
- Interpret the result for this channel and period. Check that each group has enough views for the observed values to be useful for your channel. Report the dates, formats, view totals and revenue sources alongside the RPM difference; do not present it as a universal rate.
Why live and regular-video RPM can diverge
Different view and monetization mixes
Because RPM includes views that did not monetize, a format with more unmonetized views can show a lower RPM without a corresponding drop in total revenue. Audience, geography, playback and other differences between the selected content groups may also affect the comparison. Check the actual views and revenue-source breakdown before attributing the difference to format.

Live ad delivery and mid-rolls
When monetization is enabled, livestreams can have pre-roll and display ads; mid-rolls can be automatic or manual. An enabled ad slot is not a guarantee that an ad will serve: YouTube’s systems decide whether to fill it. That means a mid-roll setting can affect delivery without guaranteeing a particular number of ads or a higher RPM.
Non-ad revenue
Eligible channels that have enabled the relevant features can also earn from Super Chat, Super Stickers and memberships during live content. Premium revenue is another possible component of RPM. If live RPM is higher, the difference may come partly or entirely from these sources rather than live ad rates.

How to read YouTube’s published mid-roll figure
YouTube reported that, across 207 countries in January 2024, creators who chose live automatic mid-roll ads had an average increase of over 20% in instream ad revenue per hour compared with channels that had not turned them on. This is YouTube’s reported average for that comparison—not a promised outcome, a livestream-versus-regular-video RPM benchmark, or an estimate of what an individual channel will earn. YouTube’s live monetization guidance provides the figure and context.

| What to record | Livestreams and replays | Regular videos |
|---|---|---|
| Reporting dates | Use the same window for both groups | Use the same window for both groups |
| Views | Record the Analytics total | Record the Analytics total |
| RPM | Record format-specific RPM | Record format-specific RPM |
| Revenue sources | Check ads, Premium and any applicable fan-funding sources | Check the available source breakdown |
| Monetization settings | Note enabled live ad formats and mid-roll configuration | Note relevant changes to monetization during the period |
Use this record to describe an observed difference, not to claim that one format inherently pays a fixed amount more. If total RPM differs but ad revenue does not, the source mix or unmonetized-view share may explain the gap.
