Compare estimated ad revenue and membership revenue separately in YouTube Studio for the same date range. Don’t use total RPM as a stand-in for ad earnings: YouTube’s RPM can combine ads, memberships, Premium, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and it includes views that generated no ads.

An always-on live stream may be eligible for Watch Page monetization when viewers watch it on YouTube or in an embedded YouTube player, provided the channel has accepted the relevant Watch Page Monetization Module. Eligibility does not guarantee that ads will appear or that a stream will earn a particular amount.

The percentages are shares of different net-revenue bases, not estimates of what a channel will earn. A larger percentage does not mean that revenue stream will pay more.

Compare both revenue streams in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Analytics. Set the same date range for the ad and membership figures so you are comparing like with like.
- In the revenue sources report, read estimated ad revenue. Then review membership revenue separately in Analytics.
- Keep views, estimated monetized playbacks and ad impressions distinct. A view may not include an ad, and a playback can include more than one ad impression.
- Record changes that can affect interpretation, including membership levels, gifted memberships, refunds and any MCN terms. Check that the relevant monetization modules have been accepted and features are enabled in YouTube Studio.
Why RPM cannot answer the comparison by itself
YouTube defines RPM as revenue per 1,000 views after YouTube’s share, but it can include several sources: ads, channel memberships, YouTube Premium, Super Chat and Super Stickers. It also includes views that did not generate revenue from ads. RPM is therefore useful as a broad monetization indicator, but it does not isolate ad revenue or identify which source caused a change.

For the ad-versus-membership question, use the separate revenue figures rather than attributing a change in total RPM to either one. YouTube’s official guidance also says that earnings are not guaranteed under the YouTube Partner Program.
Interpret an always-on channel’s results carefully
- Continuous availability is not proof that ads were served, that viewers watched monetized playbacks, or that the channel earned a particular amount.
- Memberships and ads work differently: membership income comes from recurring payments for perks; ad income depends on ads being served and viewer activity.
- Use your own channel’s analytics for a comparison. YouTube’s platform guidance gives revenue-share terms and metric definitions, but does not establish a typical earnings figure or a universal winner for always-on channels.
