Compare the same YouTube livestream over equal date ranges, split the report by viewer geography, and use estimated ad revenue for an advertising-only comparison. Then check views, estimated monetized playbacks, ad impressions and playback-based CPM to understand why the totals differ. There is no universal India-to-overseas rate: geography matters, but ad delivery and viewer mix matter too.
Set up a fair comparison in YouTube Analytics
- Choose equal date windows. In YouTube Studio, open Analytics and select the same start and end dates for each comparison. If possible, compare several windows rather than treating one short period as a stable regional rate.
- Keep the reporting basis consistent. Compare livestream data with livestream data, or replay data with replay data. YouTube says live-stream and replay ad revenue can be reviewed in Analytics; mixing them can make a regional comparison misleading. See YouTube’s live-stream monetization guidance.
- Select the geography breakdown. Use the geography dimension in the relevant report and compare India with the overseas regions you care about. Geography data may be limited in some reports, so note missing or incomplete regional data rather than treating it as zero. See YouTube Analytics guidance.
- Choose the revenue metric that matches the question. For advertising earnings, use estimated ad revenue. Keep the currency consistent, and record the reporting dates because estimated revenue can be adjusted at month end. Google’s Analytics API defaults estimated-revenue figures to USD; a currency parameter is supported for some revenue and ad-performance metrics. See YouTube Analytics API metric definitions.
Read the metrics without mixing up their denominators
Revenue totals, advertiser prices and creator yield answer different questions. Compare the same metric across geographies, and label any calculation you make yourself.
| Metric | What it tells you | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Estimated ad revenue | Estimated net revenue from Google-sold advertising for the selected dates and region. | Best listed measure for comparing ad-only earnings. |
| Estimated revenue | Broader estimated net revenue that can include advertising and non-advertising sources, such as YouTube Premium and fan funding, depending on the report. | Do not label it ad-only revenue. |
| Views | Times the video was played. | Use as the total-play denominator if calculating regional revenue per 1,000 views. |
| Estimated monetized playbacks | Playbacks with at least one ad impression. The API definition can include a pre-roll impression even if the viewer leaves before the video itself starts. | Shows how many playbacks had an ad, not how many individual ads were shown. |
| Ad impressions | Individual ads shown. | Use to examine ad delivery; one playback can involve more than one impression. |
| Playback-based CPM | Advertiser cost per 1,000 video playbacks that included at least one ad. | Useful for advertiser-side pricing on monetized playbacks; it is not creator earnings per 1,000 total views. |
| CPM | Advertiser cost per 1,000 ad impressions, before the creator revenue share. | Describes impression pricing, not creator earnings per 1,000 video views. |
| RPM | Creator revenue per 1,000 views after revenue share; it can include ads, Premium, memberships, Super Chat and Super Stickers. | Useful for overall monetization, but not an ad-only regional comparison. |
For a creator-yield comparison, you can calculate estimated ad revenue divided by total views in that region, then multiply by 1,000. Label it clearly as estimated ad revenue per 1,000 total views. For advertiser-side pricing, playback-based CPM uses a different denominator. Do not multiply CPM by total views and present the result as creator earnings.
Why India and overseas results can differ
YouTube explains that advertisers can target geographies and that competition differs by location: “Different locations will have different levels of competition in the ad market, so CPMs will vary by geography.” Geography is one influence, not a complete explanation of a channel’s revenue gap. YouTube also identifies seasonality and ad-format distribution as CPM influences. Read YouTube’s explanation of ad revenue analytics.

Not every view receives an ad. A video may not be advertiser-friendly, ads may be disabled, no available ad may match a viewer’s targeting, the viewer may have Premium, or the viewer may recently have seen an ad. As a result, regional totals can differ because of both advertiser prices and the share of views that actually monetize. Attribute the difference to country-level ad rates only if your own figures support that interpretation.
What changes on a 24/7 livestream
YouTube’s live-stream guidance lists pre-roll, display and mid-roll ads for monetized livestreams, and says the system decides which opportunities receive ads. Compare live and replay reporting on a consistent basis, and do not infer a fixed ad cadence from a stream’s 24/7 schedule.

In a March 24, 2025 explanation, YouTube said its system chooses which mid-roll slots to fill based on factors including creator earnings, viewer experience and advertiser needs. The YouTube Team put it plainly: “Just because there’s many ad slots doesn’t mean we will serve an ad on each one of them.” It also reported an average 5% revenue increase in experiments when creators combined automatic and manual mid-roll slots. That is YouTube’s experimental result, not a guaranteed lift and not a measured India-versus-overseas result for 24/7 streams. YouTube recommends placing manual slots at natural pauses rather than disruptive moments. See YouTube’s mid-roll ads explanation.
Report the result clearly
- State the dates, currency, stream-or-replay basis and revenue metric used.
- Show regional estimated ad revenue alongside views, monetized playbacks, ad impressions and playback-based CPM where available.
- Separate total contribution from per-view yield and advertiser pricing; they are not interchangeable.
- Disclose limited geography data and remember that revenue estimates may be adjusted at month end.
- Avoid a universal India-versus-overseas multiplier. No official fixed country ratio is established by the cited YouTube sources.
