There is no objectively best World of Warcraft character model. Choose the version that makes you want to keep looking at and playing that particular character. Compare the same race, body type and class in the version you actually play; inspect face and customization choices; watch idle, running and class animations; then judge the character at normal gameplay distance. “Classic,” “modern,” “SD” and “HD” are version-dependent labels, not universal quality grades.
Blizzard’s recent World of Warcraft: Forever announcements add another qualification: the project discusses Standard-Definition (SD) player-character models, High-Definition (HD) druid forms and modern and Classic visual presets. Those announcements describe work for Forever, not a guarantee that the same controls are live in Retail or every Classic version. Verify the current game, patch and setting before comparing screenshots or making a character decision.

What the model labels actually mean
Players often use “classic character model” and “modern character model” as if they were two permanent, universal choices. In practice, the label depends on the World of Warcraft version, the race and form being viewed, and the settings offered by that build. A comparison is useful only when you identify those details.

On October 7, 2026, Blizzard Entertainment’s World of Warcraft: Forever—The Future of Skyborne Visual Updates announcement discussed visual refinement, HD druid forms and SD player-character models. A September 12, 2026 What’s Next panel recap also described Classic and modern visual presets and HD/SD model options. These are announcements about an evolving Forever project. They are not evidence that every feature is already available in every World of Warcraft client.

Start with an apples-to-apples comparison
Lock the character you intend to play
Select the race, body type and class you really plan to use. A model that looks appealing on one race or class may not suit another, and a form used by a class can change what you see during ordinary play. Comparing different races, body types or classes at the same time makes it easy to attribute a difference to the model when it actually comes from the character itself.
Use the controls offered by that version
Blizzard’s character-customization work organizes choices into categories rather than one undifferentiated list. Its documented interface lets you preview choices by hovering and uses a shared character-creation and Barber Shop user interface. Categories can include eyes, face and facial hair, along with other race-specific choices. The exact catalog is not fixed across all races or versions, so inspect the options that are actually displayed for your character.
Make a note of the selected face and other features before switching models or presets. If you cannot reproduce a look after changing a setting, the issue may be a different category, a race-specific limitation or a version difference rather than a rendering problem.

View the character twice
Use a close creator or Barber Shop preview to examine the face, eyes, hair, beard and texture detail. Then move to ordinary gameplay distance. At that distance, silhouette, posture, equipment and animation often matter more than a small facial detail. A close-up preview answers “Do I like this face?”; the in-game view answers “Will I enjoy seeing this character for hours?” Both are necessary.
Compare customization, not just the headline model
A model choice is only one layer of appearance. Two players may select the same broad preset but end up with very different characters because they value different faces, eye choices, hairstyles or facial hair. Compare the complete character you can build, not a default screenshot.

Check every category you care about
- Face: Look for the shape, expression and features that make the character recognizable to you.
- Eyes: Compare eye shape and color at both creator distance and normal gameplay distance.
- Hair and facial hair: Check whether the styles you would actually use are available for that race and model.
- Body and silhouette: Notice proportions and the outline created by your usual armor or transmog.
- Race- or form-specific details: Include any feature that changes when the character enters a class form.
Blizzard’s Engineer’s Workshop article on character customization explains why the system was redesigned around categorized data and a shared creation/Barber Shop interface. It also reports a permutation count in the range of millions for Shadowlands-era texture combinations. That is a technical count of possible texture permutations, not a count of distinct player-facing choices and not proof that one model is visually better. Use it as context for the system’s complexity, not as a score.
Separate “available” from “appealing”
A model can expose many options without offering the one face or hairstyle you want. Conversely, a model with fewer visible choices may contain the specific combination that makes your character feel right. First confirm that your desired categories and choices exist; only then judge the rendering and style.
Watch animation before deciding
Static screenshots cannot show how a character occupies the world. Watch the idle stance, run cycle and class actions where they are available. Pay attention to posture, weight, hand position and the way the face and body read while moving. If the character spends substantial time in a class form, inspect that form as well.
Animation is a personal priority, not a universal quality test. A Blizzard-hosted discussion about model preferences includes players who prioritize animation, players who focus on the model’s face and appearance, and players who consider animation less visible because transmog draws their attention. Those are individual judgments, not a representative survey. The useful conclusion is that you should test the motions you will see rather than borrowing someone else’s ranking.
One forum question captures the disagreement in players’ own words: “Which do you people like or prefer more when playing World of Warcraft? And how has it change your experience in terms of playing your character and game?” The grammar is the poster’s; the question is valuable because it links appearance to the experience of playing a specific character, not to an abstract graphics debate.

Judge the visual tone you want
Look beyond resolution or texture sharpness. Compare proportions, face design, surface detail and the overall visual tone. Ask whether the character belongs in the version of Azeroth you enjoy. Some players feel newer models preserve the older identity; others feel that changes in faces or proportions move too far from it. The forum discussion contains both kinds of reaction, so there is no source-backed universal winner.
Questions that reveal a style mismatch
- Does the face look like the character you imagined, or merely like a technically newer asset?
- Do the proportions fit the armor and silhouette you expect to use?
- Does the expression remain appealing when the character is idle, moving and using abilities?
- Does the model’s level of detail fit the surrounding world and the visual era you prefer?
- Will the character still feel familiar if you change hairstyles, facial hair or transmog later?
Answer these questions with the exact character and preset in front of you. Broad labels such as “classic-looking” and “modern-looking” are shorthand for a collection of judgments about proportion, face design, texture and animation; they do not replace the inspection.
A repeatable method for choosing
Use this process whenever you are deciding between an older and newer model, or between SD and HD options that your current version actually provides.
- Identify the environment. Write down the game version, patch and model setting. If you are evaluating World of Warcraft: Forever, record whether the client currently offers the relevant SD, HD, Classic or modern preset.
- Choose the real character. Select the intended race, body type and class. If you are undecided about the class, test the class actions that would influence the decision rather than relying on a generic preview.
- Build the closest version of your character. Use the character-creation or Barber Shop interface. Preview categorized choices by hovering, and record the face, eyes, hair and facial-hair selections you want to compare.
- Inspect the close view. Check face design, eyes, texture detail and the features that make the character recognizable.
- Inspect ordinary gameplay. Move the character, watch idle and run animations, trigger class actions where possible, and view the silhouette with the equipment or transmog you expect to use.
- Score only your priorities. Give each option a simple personal score from 1 to 5 for face, customization, animation, visual tone and gameplay-distance appearance. The numbers organize your reaction; they do not create an objective winner.
- Resolve ties by identification. If scores are close, choose the character you would rather keep looking at and playing. That final response is more useful than a general community ranking.
- Recheck availability. Before committing a character change, verify that the setting and choices you evaluated are present in the live client and patch you will play.

How version and availability can change the answer
Do not compare a screenshot from one client with a live character in another and call the difference a model preference. Record the version beside every screenshot or video. A setting called “Classic” in one context may refer to a different preset or model implementation in another.
The Forever announcements are especially important to label correctly. The September 12 panel recap describes modern and Classic visual presets and HD/SD options in that same project context. Announced work can change before release, and an announced option may not be exposed in the build you are using. Check the in-game character-creation or Barber Shop controls and the current patch notes or official announcement for status.

Do not infer that an SD/HD toggle announced for Forever has been added to Retail or to every Classic version. Conversely, the absence of a toggle in your current client does not disprove an announcement about a different project build. Version labels are part of the comparison, not a footnote.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Choosing from a single close-up
A face can look excellent in the creator and feel wrong during movement. Always perform a normal-distance check and watch at least idle and running animations.
Comparing defaults instead of intended characters
Default faces and hair are convenient for screenshots but may not represent the character you will play. Recreate your preferred categories on both options before judging them.
Treating a community preference as a measurement
Forum comments demonstrate that players disagree; they do not measure a population-wide winner. Use comments to identify questions to test, such as whether animation or face design matters more to you.

The millions-range Shadowlands permutation figure describes technical texture combinations. It does not tell you how many face, eye or hair choices you will see, nor does it establish visual quality.
Assuming an announcement is a live feature
Forever’s SD/HD and preset announcements are project-specific and evolving. Confirm the control in the client and note the patch before making a permanent character decision.
Ignoring transmog and repeated viewing distance
If armor or transmog covers much of the model, animation and silhouette may dominate your experience. If you spend time in menus or close camera views, facial detail may matter more. Test the situations in which you actually see the character.
When the models are both good enough
Sometimes each option satisfies your basic requirements. In that case, do not search for a universal verdict. Choose the model whose face you recognize instantly, whose movement you enjoy watching and whose visual tone matches the version of the game you want to inhabit. If the decision remains tied, keep the option that is currently available in the version and patch you intend to play; a theoretical preference is less useful than a model you can select and keep.
