How to Compare Wind Power With Solar Power for Electricity Generation

There is no universal wind-versus-solar winner. Compare projects in the same geography and at the same scale, then evaluate annual and hourly energy, cost and financing, grid connection, land and siting constraints, and lifecycle effects. A national comparison, a utility project, and a household system can produce different answers.

Start by defining the comparison

“Wind power” and “solar power” cover several different project types. Land-based wind farms, offshore wind farms, utility-scale photovoltaic (PV) plants, rooftop PV, and concentrating solar power (CSP) have different resources, costs, land requirements, construction practices, and grid connections. A fair comparison names the technology, location, project size, study period, and purpose before any numbers are collected.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

For example, a national electricity-planning study might compare thousands of megawatts of land-based wind with utility PV over 30 years. A homeowner is instead choosing between a rooftop array, a battery, or grid electricity. The national generation figures for those categories cannot be used to predict the output or economics of a particular roof.

  • Geography: identify the country or market, climate, wind regime, solar resource, electricity prices, transmission network, and permitting rules.
  • Scale: keep utility-scale wind, offshore wind, utility PV, distributed PV, and household systems in separate categories.
  • Purpose: state whether the objective is lowest energy cost, dependable hourly supply, emissions reduction, local generation, energy security, or a specific site decision.
  • Study period: use the same operating lifetime, weather years, inflation assumptions, currency, and price year for both technologies.

Without those boundaries, a comparison can look precise while combining incompatible projects.

Understand what each technology converts into electricity

Wind turbines

Wind turbines capture the kinetic energy of moving air with their blades. The rotor turns a drive shaft connected to an electric generator, and power electronics and a transformer prepare the output for the grid. Wind speed changes continuously, so the turbine does not produce its rated megawatt output all the time.

Output depends on the site’s wind-speed distribution, hub height, rotor diameter and design, turbine availability, wake effects from neighboring turbines, electrical losses, and curtailment. Taller towers can reach stronger and steadier winds, while a larger rotor can capture more energy at lower wind speeds; these design choices also affect construction, transport, and cost.

Solar photovoltaic systems

PV cells convert sunlight directly into direct-current electricity. Inverters convert that DC output into alternating current for buildings or the grid. Panels can be deployed on roofs, parking structures, brownfields, or large ground-mounted sites, from small systems to utility-scale plants.

PV production follows the sun: it rises in the morning, peaks around solar noon, falls in the afternoon, and stops at night. Clouds, snow, shading, panel orientation, temperature, inverter availability, soiling, and wiring losses reduce output. Batteries can store some daytime generation and discharge it after sunset, but storage adds equipment, losses, cost, and a finite duration.

Concentrating solar power

CSP uses mirrors to focus sunlight and produce high-temperature heat, which drives a thermal power cycle. Some CSP designs include thermal storage, allowing generation after sunset. CSP is not interchangeable with ordinary PV in a technology comparison: it needs a strong direct-solar resource, large fields of mirrors, and different plant and water considerations.

Compare energy yield, not nameplate capacity

Nameplate capacity is the maximum electrical output a plant can deliver under specified conditions, measured in megawatts (MW). Electricity generated over time is measured in megawatt-hours (MWh) or kilowatt-hours (kWh). A 100-MW plant that operates at an average 35% of its rating produces far less annual energy than a 100-MW plant averaging 60%.

Use the capacity-factor equation for a common first check:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Capacity factor = actual generation during the period ÷ (nameplate capacity × hours in the period).

For annual comparisons, multiply the capacity by 8,760 hours, then apply the expected capacity factor and losses. This is only an energy estimate; it does not show the hours in which electricity arrives or whether the grid can use it.

Inputs for a credible yield estimate

  • At least one representative multi-year weather dataset, rather than a single unusually windy or sunny year.
  • Wind-speed profiles by hour and height, turbine power curves, wake losses, expected downtime, and electrical losses.
  • Solar irradiance by hour, panel tilt and azimuth, temperature, shading, snow or soiling assumptions, inverter losses, and degradation.
  • Planned capacity, layout, availability, curtailment, and the date the plant is expected to enter service.

NREL identifies the hourly wind profile, expected downtime, and plant energy losses as capacity-factor influences. Solar output similarly depends on the local irradiance profile and project design. A capacity factor is therefore a project result, not a universal property of “wind” or “solar.”

Keep generation categories separate

For U.S. context, the Energy Information Administration reported about 464 billion kWh of wind generation in 2025, equal to about 10.5% of utility-scale U.S. generation that year. The same source reported about 292.817 billion kWh from utility-scale PV and about 93.148 billion kWh from small-scale, grid-connected PV in 2025. The utility-scale and small-scale PV figures must not be combined or compared with wind unless the category boundaries are stated. These are annual U.S. statistics, not forecasts, technology rankings, or project cost estimates.

Examine when electricity is available

Two projects can produce the same annual MWh and have very different value to the grid. Annual totals hide the timing of production, and capacity factor is an annual average rather than an hourly delivery guarantee.

Wind’s profile

Wind output follows the site’s wind regime. Some locations are windier at night, some during the day, and many have strong seasonal patterns. Output can change over minutes or hours as weather systems pass. A portfolio spread across different regions can smooth some variation, but transmission is required to move that power.

Solar’s profile

PV output is concentrated in daylight and usually peaks near midday. A plant can have high annual energy while producing nothing at night. Its profile may align well with daytime cooling demand, or it may coincide with abundant midday generation from other solar plants and increase curtailment. A battery can shift energy into evening hours, subject to its power rating, energy capacity, round-trip losses, operating limits, and replacement schedule.

Use hourly and seasonal tests

For a project or policy decision, compare hourly simulated generation with the local load and grid conditions. At minimum, report:

  • Monthly and seasonal generation totals.
  • Hourly output distributions and the number of hours below a chosen output threshold.
  • Expected curtailment when transmission or demand is insufficient.
  • Ramping requirements and the need for reserves or balancing resources.
  • Storage duration, charging source, discharge schedule, and losses, if storage is included.

Annual energy alone cannot establish that one resource is more useful to the grid. Location, transmission access, demand shape, neighboring generators, storage, and flexibility services determine system value.

Compare costs without mistaking LCOE for a complete answer

Levelized cost of energy (LCOE) converts a project’s capital expenditure and operating costs into an average cost per unit of energy over its assumed life. NREL’s archived 2019 Annual Technology Baseline describes LCOE as combining capital expenditure, operations and maintenance, and capacity factor. Its technical documentation states: “The LCOE uses an annual average capacity factor when spreading costs over the anticipated energy generation.”

That metric is useful for screening, but it omits important operating and system effects. NREL notes that the simplified calculation does not capture specific behavior such as ramping, start-up, and shutdown, and that the value of capacity and flexibility services depends strongly on the electricity system where a plant is introduced. The archived estimates also exclude some location-specific costs. They should not be presented as current bids, universal prices, or a local project’s delivered cost.

Build a matched cost model

Cost or assumption What to specify for both technologies Why it changes the result
Capital expenditure Equipment, construction, development, interconnection, roads, foundations, substations, and owner’s costs Wind and solar have different site works and electrical designs; remote projects can require expensive infrastructure.
Operations and maintenance Fixed and variable O&M, inspections, land leases, insurance, replacement parts, and major component replacements Costs occur at different times and can vary with project access and technology.
Financing Debt and equity rates, tax treatment, inflation, construction schedule, and risk premium Financing assumptions can move LCOE as much as equipment assumptions.
Lifetime and degradation Operating years, annual output decline, repowering, inverter replacement, and decommissioning Longer life or different degradation changes lifetime MWh and costs.
Grid connection Interconnection studies, transmission upgrades, losses, congestion, and curtailment A cheap generator at a constrained node may deliver less usable energy.
Policy and market rules Tax credits, grants, renewable certificates, contracts, tariffs, and price assumptions Support differs by jurisdiction and can change the private economics.

State the currency, price year, geography, tax treatment, discount rate, lifetime, and whether connection and storage are included. Compare the same service: a generator delivering energy at its busbar is not equivalent to a firm evening supply contract.

Add system-value measures

After calculating project LCOE, add measures that reflect the grid’s needs. These can include the cost of transmission, balancing, storage, backup capacity, congestion, curtailment, and energy delivered during high-demand hours. A project with a higher LCOE can still provide greater value if it produces during scarce hours or uses existing transmission, while a low-LCOE project can lose value when its output is frequently curtailed.

Check the site and interconnection before choosing a technology

Wind-site checks

  • Measure or model wind speed, direction, turbulence, and seasonal variation at the proposed hub height.
  • Assess setbacks, homes, roads, aviation, radar, shadow flicker, access roads, crane pads, and turbine spacing.
  • Map transmission distance and available capacity, including any required substation or line upgrades.
  • Screen bird and bat habitat, protected areas, migration routes, and cumulative effects from nearby projects.
  • Confirm transport routes for blades, towers, and nacelles, plus construction and maintenance access.

Solar-site checks

  • Measure solar irradiance, shading, orientation, slope, temperature, snow, and soiling conditions.
  • Confirm usable roof or ground area, structural capacity, setbacks, drainage, geotechnical conditions, and fire access.
  • Evaluate land-use conflicts, habitat clearing, glare, agricultural compatibility, and community acceptance.
  • Locate the point of interconnection and estimate line losses, upgrade costs, and export limits.
  • For CSP, verify direct-normal irradiance, mirror-field water needs, thermal storage design, and tower-related wildlife considerations.

Land area should be described carefully. Wind farms may occupy a large project area while allowing some farming or grazing between turbines; roads, foundations, substations, and setbacks still create direct and indirect land effects. Ground-mounted PV can provide dense generation on a fenced site but may require clearing or compete with other land uses. Rooftop PV uses an existing structure and avoids a new generating field, but roof orientation, age, shading, and structural limits constrain output.

Compare environmental effects by category

Both wind and solar avoid direct air emissions during normal electricity generation, but neither has zero lifecycle impact. Manufacturing, mining, transport, construction, land use, maintenance, and end-of-life management all matter.

Wind

Wind turbines do not release air or water emissions during operation, with rare exceptions, and do not require cooling water. Potential local and lifecycle effects include audible noise, visual changes, roads and foundations, material production, and bird and bat injury or death. Turbine blades are made from composite materials that remain difficult to recycle in many current systems, so decommissioning plans should specify removal, reuse, recycling, or disposal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Solar PV and CSP

Solar power plants do not produce air pollution or greenhouse gases while operating. Manufacturing and disposal have environmental effects, including material extraction, industrial energy use, and waste handling. Some ground-mounted facilities require land clearing that can affect habitat. Some solar facilities use water for panel cleaning or cooling. These statements do not apply equally to every PV installation: rooftop PV generally has different land and water requirements than a large plant, while CSP towers can harm birds and insects because of concentrated heat and intense light.

Use matched lifecycle boundaries

If emissions or material impacts are compared, use the same lifecycle method, functional unit, system boundary, geography, recycling assumptions, and operating lifetime for both technologies. Do not compare a PV energy-payback statement with an unmatched wind figure. The EIA reports that a PV system can produce energy equal to the energy used to manufacture it within one to four years and that most PV systems operate for 30 years or more. That statement has a specific lifecycle scope and should not be treated as a direct wind-versus-PV ranking without a matched study.

A practical comparison workflow

  1. Define the decision. Write down the location, project scale, technology variants, target service, commissioning year, and whether storage is allowed.
  2. Collect site data. Obtain hourly wind or solar resource data, land or rooftop constraints, grid maps, weather years, and applicable permitting requirements.
  3. Choose comparable designs. Specify turbine hub height and rotor, PV module and inverter design, plant capacity, layout, storage, and expected lifetime.
  4. Model hourly generation. Calculate annual MWh, monthly output, capacity factor, losses, availability, degradation, curtailment, and extreme-weather downtime.
  5. Match the delivered service. Compare energy at the same electrical boundary, then test transmission, storage, balancing, backup, and congestion assumptions.
  6. Calculate costs transparently. Use identical currency, price year, discount rate, financing convention, lifetime, policy treatment, and inclusion of interconnection.
  7. Value timing. Compare hourly output with demand, market prices, reliability needs, and renewable curtailment rather than relying on annual MWh.
  8. Screen environmental and social effects. Include materials, construction, land, water, wildlife, noise, visual effects, waste, and decommissioning.
  9. Test uncertainty. Run low, central, and high cases for resource quality, capital cost, financing, degradation, curtailment, connection delays, and policy changes.
  10. Report the trade-off. State which option best meets the defined objective and identify the assumptions that could reverse that result.

Common comparison mistakes and how to correct them

Mistake Why it misleads Correction
Equating MW with MWh or kWh Capacity is a rate; generation is energy accumulated over time. Report expected annual and hourly generation with capacity factor and losses.
Using a universal capacity-factor ranking Resource quality, design, downtime, and curtailment differ by site. Model the actual location and technology configuration.
Mixing generation categories Utility-scale wind, utility PV, and small-scale PV represent different boundaries. Label each category and compare like with like.
Presenting archived LCOE as a current quote Older national estimates may omit local connection costs and current financing. Use the archived NREL method as a framework, then build a current project model.
Comparing annual energy only It ignores timing, demand, transmission, storage, and curtailment. Use hourly and seasonal profiles and calculate delivered system value.
Calling either technology impact-free Manufacturing, land, water, wildlife, and end-of-life effects remain. Report each lifecycle category with matched boundaries.
Applying utility data to a home Rooftop area, roof condition, tariffs, backup needs, and retail rates differ from grid projects. Perform a site-specific household assessment.

How the answer changes by decision type

National or regional planning

Use a portfolio model with hourly demand, transmission, existing generators, reserve requirements, storage, and geographic diversity. The relevant question is not which single technology has the lowest average cost, but which mix reliably serves demand while meeting land, emissions, and policy constraints.

A utility-scale project at a known site

Prioritize measured resource quality, interconnection queue position, construction logistics, permitting risk, curtailment, financing, and the contract’s delivery requirements. A site with an excellent resource but no affordable transmission may be less attractive than a moderate-resource site near available grid capacity.

A household or small facility

Compare usable roof or property area, hourly load, retail electricity prices, export compensation, outage requirements, battery size, maintenance, and the building’s expected occupancy. Utility-scale wind and national PV generation statistics do not establish whether a small wind turbine or rooftop array will work at a particular address.

Decision checklist

  • Are wind and solar being compared in the same location, year, scale, and electrical boundary?
  • Are land-based and offshore wind separated?
  • Are PV and CSP separated?
  • Are utility-scale and small-scale PV figures labeled separately?
  • Do annual MWh estimates include resource, downtime, design, degradation, and losses?
  • Do hourly profiles show when energy is produced and how much may be curtailed?
  • Are transmission, interconnection, storage, balancing, and backup assumptions explicit?
  • Does the cost model state price year, currency, financing, lifetime, policy, and connection scope?
  • Are land, water, wildlife, noise, materials, and end-of-life effects reported separately?
  • Does the conclusion identify the objective and the assumptions that drive it?
