Compare Watch time (hours) in YouTube Studio over the same date range and at the same reporting level. Choose the same content filter—Live, On demand, or Live and on-demand—for both items. A stream’s broadcast length is not its watch time: the metric counts time viewers actually spent watching.
Compare the same thing in YouTube Studio
For a single livestream and a single regular video, compare their video-level Analytics. For channel totals, use channel-level reporting for both. Don’t compare a video’s figures with a channel total: they describe different reporting levels.
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Analytics for the livestream or its video entry. Open Analytics for the regular video as well. You can also use Advanced Mode for specific comparisons and exports. YouTube’s Analytics guide describes Analytics levels and Advanced Mode.
- Set the same date range in both reports. A shared range makes the comparison about performance over the same period, rather than mixing a recent stream result with a video’s lifetime total.
- Choose the same content filter in each report: Live for live viewing, On demand for playback of an archive or regular video, or Live and on-demand when you want the combined figure.
- Compare Watch time (hours) directly. Record views, average view duration, and other context separately; none of them is a substitute for accumulated watch time.
- If the stream has an archive and you want to know whether viewers watched live or later, compare the Live and On demand reports separately where available. Use the combined filter only when the question is total viewing across both.
YouTube notes that Analytics is based on video ID and processed to remove spam, and that it measures different information from the Live Control Room. The real-time dashboard and Analytics can therefore show different figures without either difference, by itself, proving an error. See YouTube’s live-stream metrics guidance.
Know what each metric tells you
| Metric | What it tells you | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Watch time (hours) | The amount of time viewers watched the video. | Use this as the main measure when comparing total viewing. YouTube’s reach documentation defines the metric. |
| Views | Legitimate view starts under YouTube’s counting rules; a view is not a fixed amount of viewing time. | Use for reach, not as a proxy for hours watched. |
| Average view duration or average watch time | Average time watched per view or playback, as labelled in the report. | Use to understand typical viewing depth alongside total watch time. YouTube’s engagement documentation explains engagement metrics. |
| Concurrent viewers / peak concurrent viewers | How many viewers are watching simultaneously, or the livestream’s peak simultaneous audience. | Use as a live-audience measure, not as accumulated viewing time. |
A 24-hour broadcast does not automatically produce 24 hours of watch time. The total accumulates from viewers’ actual playback. Likewise, a video with more views can have less total watch time than another video if its viewers watch for less time on average.

Separate the livestream from its replay
A broadcast and its archive can represent different viewing behavior. A person watching while the event is live contributes to live viewing; someone playing the saved video later contributes to on-demand viewing. Decide whether you are comparing the live event, its replay, or both before choosing the filter. If the report offers only a combined figure for the view you need, don’t treat it as a live-only or replay-only result.
For continuous broadcasts, there is an important archive limitation: YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup. A 24/7 stream therefore may not have a complete replay to compare. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

Check monetization progress in Earn, not general Analytics
General Analytics watch time and the valid public watch hours used for YouTube Partner Program eligibility are not interchangeable. YouTube’s eligibility guidance says livestream watch hours do not count toward the public-watch-hour threshold when streams are unlisted, deleted, or not converted to VOD. Check the Earn area in YouTube Studio for the eligibility figure rather than assuming that all watch time in Analytics qualifies. YouTube’s Partner Programme eligibility page lists one route of 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 valid public watch hours in the past 12 months, as well as a separate Shorts route of 1,000 subscribers and 10 million valid public Shorts views in the past 90 days. Meeting a threshold alone does not guarantee acceptance; policy review also applies, and YouTube’s published requirements can change.
Troubleshoot misleading comparisons
- The stream’s watch time looks much smaller than its duration: broadcast duration is not viewing duration. Compare the Watch time (hours) metric, which accumulates actual viewer playback.
- The livestream and regular video totals seem mismatched: check that both use the same date range, reporting level, and content filter. Confirm whether the stream report includes only live viewing or also on-demand playback.
- The Live Control Room differs from Analytics: the reports measure different information, and Analytics is processed and despammed. Use the report appropriate to your question rather than treating the dashboard difference alone as evidence of an error.
- A 24/7 stream has no complete archive: streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube recommends a local archive backup; don’t assume a full VOD exists for replay analysis.
- Analytics watch hours do not match Earn’s progress: Earn reports valid public watch hours for eligibility, with exclusions for certain livestream states. Consult that figure for monetization progress.
YouTube says the Studio interface is being updated gradually beginning July 2026, so labels and layout may vary. If a control is in a different place, use the Analytics filter/report descriptions rather than relying on an exact screen position. YouTube’s Analytics guide includes the rollout note.
