Review the images side by side or as an overlay, then use a difference view to locate changes. A visual diff points to rendered differences; it does not tell you whether they are bugs. Verify each important change on the live page before keeping or replacing a baseline.
What a screenshot comparison can tell you
A screenshot comparison checks how a page rendered at two points in time. It can expose shifts in layout, missing elements, changed text, altered colors, or image differences. It cannot identify the cause on its own: a highlighted area may reflect a real regression, an intentional redesign, or a different capture condition.
The available documentation does not establish VisualScraper-specific buttons, comparison modes, or settings. The steps below describe a general workflow; if VisualScraper offers the relevant view or controls in your account, use them, but do not assume a particular interface label.
Prepare a comparable before-and-after pair
1. Match the page and its state
Use the exact same URL for both captures. Reproduce the same relevant state, such as whether a menu is open, which form step is visible, or how far down the page you have scrolled. For pages that vary by login, region, or user preference, keep those conditions consistent too.

- CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
2. Match the rendering conditions
Keep the browser, viewport dimensions, and device scale the same. Wait for fonts, images, and other assets to load before capturing. If a page has animation, rotating banners, or other changing content, stabilize it where possible or capture both versions at a comparable point in the cycle. A different viewport or a late-loading font can create visible differences even when the page itself has not changed.
3. Save a trusted baseline and capture the current page
Use a screenshot you have reason to trust as the baseline. Capture the current page with the same method and conditions, then confirm that both images show the intended URL and state. Keep the original baseline unchanged while investigating unexpected differences.
Inspect the difference without mistaking it for a verdict
- Side-by-side: Useful for seeing the overall layout and comparing content in context.
- Overlay or slider: Useful for spotting alignment shifts and changes in position when the images are viewed together.
- Pixel-difference or highlight view: Useful for locating changed pixels or regions after you know where to look.
These views answer different questions: side-by-side helps with context, overlays make alignment changes easier to notice, and a pixel diff directs attention to changed regions. If your comparison tool has a sensitivity or threshold control, raising the tolerance may suppress minor pixel noise. The trade-off is that a less-sensitive comparison can also hide a subtle but genuine change. ScreenshotRender describes shared-viewport comparisons with side-by-side, overlay, slider, and threshold options; the availability of those controls in VisualScraper is not established (ScreenshotRender).

Decide whether to accept the change
- Open the actual page. Check the changed area in context instead of relying only on a percentage or highlighted region.
- Assess impact. A small change around a price, button, or important message may matter more than a large change caused by an animation or image rotation.
- Confirm intent. Check whether the difference is expected, such as a planned copy edit or redesign.
- Update the baseline only for an expected change. If the change is intentional and correct, save the new version as the reference. If it is unexpected, keep the trusted baseline and investigate or fix the page first.
This distinction is central to visual regression testing: a diff is evidence to inspect, not an automatic pass/fail explanation. iTechGuides outlines the same-state capture and deliberate-baseline workflow, while Playwright documents screenshot snapshots, stabilization, and snapshot updates (iTechGuides; Playwright).

Manual comparison or repeatable visual regression checks?
| Approach | Best suited to | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Manual live comparison | A one-time review or exploratory check of two page versions. | Quick to inspect, but consistency depends on matching the URL, state, viewport, and capture timing. A comparison service may provide different views or sensitivity settings; verify which are available before relying on them. |
| Automated screenshot snapshots | Repeated checks, especially when a team wants to catch visual changes during development. | Requires a trusted snapshot and deliberate management of updates. Playwright Test documents screenshot comparisons, repeated captures to stabilize output, snapshot updates, and pixel-difference options; its behavior and setup are specific to Playwright (Playwright). |
| Crawl-to-crawl comparison | Reviewing changes across pages captured in separate site crawls. | Matching the exact same URL matters. VisualSitemaps describes crawl comparison with low, medium, and high sensitivity choices; these are that service’s documented choices, not verified VisualScraper settings (VisualSitemaps). |
For a single page, manual inspection may be enough. For recurring checks, automated snapshots can make captures more repeatable, but only if the environment and baseline are controlled. Neither approach makes the meaning of a difference self-evident.

Troubleshoot misleading differences
- Many elements appear shifted: Check viewport dimensions, device scale, browser, and scroll position. A mismatch in capture geometry can move much of the page.
- Text wraps differently: Verify that the same fonts loaded before capture and that the viewport matches. A fallback font can change line breaks and element heights.
- Images or banners differ: Look for carousels, rotating promotions, changing timestamps, or animation. Compare at a stable state if possible.
- Differences appear only near page load: Wait for assets and page content to settle before taking either screenshot. If available, a tool’s readiness or stabilization settings may help; their names and availability vary by product.
- The diff is noisy across many pixels: Review capture consistency first, then consider a sensitivity adjustment if your tool supports one. Lower sensitivity can reduce noise but may hide small real changes. SiteReceipt discusses this trade-off (SiteReceipt).
- A large difference seems harmless—or a tiny one looks serious: Inspect the actual page and the purpose of the changed region. Area or percentage alone does not measure user impact.
Or skip the browser setup
If you want to create the current screenshot without configuring a browser capture yourself, ScreenshotNeo accepts a URL in one GET request and returns a screenshot or PDF. For a repeatable comparison, keep your trusted baseline separately and compare the returned image with it using your chosen review or visual-testing workflow.
