How to Compare U.S. Sports Betting Apps: Fees, Markets, and Player Controls

There is no reliable nationwide winner for sports betting app fees, markets, or player-protection tools: availability and rules vary by state, and a comparable current fee schedule across operators is not established here. Start by confirming that the app is authorized where you are physically located, then compare the payment methods, wager markets, and account controls available in that same jurisdiction.

First, check whether you can legally use the app where you are

Sports betting authorization is state-specific, and a state’s general approval does not necessarily mean mobile betting is permitted everywhere within its borders. An account by itself does not make a real-money wager legal. Check the state regulator’s current information and the operator’s authorized-jurisdiction list, including any local or intrastate restrictions.

Location can also affect an account after registration. DraftKings says a wagering session ends when a customer enters a jurisdiction where wagering is not permitted; previously placed wagers remain viewable and may proceed normally, but new wagers require the customer to return to a permitted location and pass location verification. bet365 likewise cautions that some areas inside listed U.S. jurisdictions may not allow mobile wagering. Treat each operator’s list as a starting point, not a substitute for checking your precise location.

How to compare the costs of depositing and withdrawing

The available sources do not establish a current, apples-to-apples fee schedule for named apps. That means there is not enough evidence here to call an app cheapest, fee-free, or best for withdrawals. Compare the full payment path for your state and payment method rather than relying on a general claim about an operator.

  1. For each app, record your state and the date you checked its terms.
  2. Choose the same payment method for each comparison. Record any operator deposit charge and any separate charge from your bank or payment provider.
  3. Check the withdrawal method, any withdrawal or expedited-payment charge, processing terms, and stated minimums or maximums.
  4. Check bonus terms separately from cash terms. Record whether promotional credits can be withdrawn, any minimum wager, and how winnings from a promotional wager are handled.
  5. Compare only like with like: same state, payment instrument, transaction type, and date. Recheck the terms before moving money because payment options and conditions can change.

One concrete term illustrates why promotional value should not be mistaken for cash: bet365’s House Rules, accessed October 4, 2026, state a $0.10 minimum sports wager and say bonus bets are non-withdrawable, with returns handled under the stated rules. That is one operator’s rule, not a typical minimum or a cross-app fee comparison.

Markets vary by state as well as by app

There is no universal market menu. DraftKings’ help materials list examples including moneyline, point spreads, parlays, same-game parlays, futures, potential-win bets, and round robins, while noting that available bet types depend on jurisdiction. Those examples do not establish that every listed market is available to every customer or on every sport.

College betting is one area where local rules can make a visible difference. DraftKings’ college-betting overview describes state-specific variation involving in-state teams and player or team proposition bets. Before comparing apps, check the exact sports, leagues, and wager types you care about in the state where you will place bets. A menu shown in another state—or in a general help article—is not proof of local availability.

Compare responsible-gambling tools by what they do

A label such as “responsible” does not show how an app’s controls work. Check the features and terms directly, including whether a control applies to one operator or across a state program.

  • Limits: Look for deposit limits and, where offered, wager or loss limits. Check whether you can set them by day, week, or month and when a change takes effect.
  • Time controls: Check for session limits, elapsed-time displays, reminders or reality checks, and cooling-off periods.
  • Exclusion: Find the operator’s self-exclusion route and any statewide program. Confirm how long an exclusion lasts, which operators it covers, and how to request it.
  • Access to help: Note whether support and help resources are linked from the account or responsible-gaming area.
  • Funding controls: Review age verification, credit restrictions, and rules for transfers or automatic deposits where applicable.

North Carolina’s State Lottery Commission says licensed operators make player-protection tools available, while noting that features may vary. Its examples include daily, weekly, or monthly deposit limits, wager limits, session controls, cooling-off, app-level self-exclusion, reality checks, help resources, and a statewide one-form exclusion option. The commission also says licensed operators must verify bettors are at least 21 in North Carolina; that age rule should not be assumed to apply in every state.

Virginia’s administrative regulation specifies platform access to self-exclusion information, a way to note elapsed time, a cooling-off option, accessible terms, an age-verification notice, credit restrictions, restrictions on fund transfers or automatic deposits, and display of credits and spending as cash. These are Virginia requirements, not a guarantee that every operator offers the same features or implements them identically elsewhere.

What state-level protection counts can—and cannot—tell you

Policy comparisons describe laws and regulations, not an app’s usability or conduct. The September 2024 NCPG/Vixio report assessed public laws and regulations as of June 2024 against 82 NCPG Internet Responsible Gambling Standards across 10 categories. It found that 10 states and Washington, D.C., matched 40 or more standards; nine states matched 25–39; and 11 matched 10–24. Those are counts of matches, not an app ranking or a measure of actual operator practices. The report expressly says it does not evaluate operators’ products or player-protection methods.

The American Gaming Association’s 2025 guide, using jurisdiction data through January 31, 2025, reported that 28 of 38 covered jurisdictions required an overall responsible-gambling plan, all 38 required self-exclusion programs, and 29 jurisdictions with account-based online gaming, sports betting, or digital-wallet casino wagering required a self-limit mechanism. These figures describe the guide’s covered commercial-gaming jurisdictions, not every U.S. jurisdiction or the quality of individual apps. The NCPG/Vixio report also found no state in its June 2024 analysis required deposit limits by law, even though self-exclusion and player-set limits appeared in a clear majority of state laws.

A practical comparison checklist

Before choosing an app, fill out this comparison for the state and location where you expect to wager:

  • Authorization: Is the operator currently authorized in your state, and is mobile betting allowed at your precise location?
  • Payments: For your intended deposit and withdrawal methods, what are the operator charges, outside provider charges, processing terms, and transaction limits?
  • Promotions: Which credits are cash, which are non-withdrawable, and what wagering conditions apply?
  • Markets: Are the sports, leagues, and specific bet types you want available locally?
  • Controls: Can you set limits, manage session time, take a cooling-off break, and reach operator or statewide self-exclusion?
  • Terms: Are control settings easy to find, and do the terms explain when a limit or exclusion begins and what it covers?

Use current operator terms and state regulator information for the final check; availability, payment conditions, markets, and tools can change. Limits and exclusions are controls, not guarantees against gambling-related harm. If gambling is causing problems, use the support resources linked by your state or operator.
