How to Compare U.S. Bitcoin and Ether ETFs: Fees, Custody, Liquidity, and Tracking

Start by checking whether a product holds Bitcoin or Ether directly or gets exposure through futures: those are different vehicles, so their fees, custody, and tracking are not directly interchangeable. Then compare the current prospectus, trading costs, and market data for the specific fund and date you care about.

First identify what the product actually holds

In the United States, products commonly called spot Bitcoin or Ether ETFs are generally exchange-traded commodity trusts that hold the crypto asset itself. The SEC’s Investor.gov bulletin says these products are not registered as investment companies under the Investment Company Act of 1940, even when “ETF” appears in their name or common descriptions. That legal distinction matters: the label alone does not tell you what the fund owns or which regulatory requirements apply.

A futures-based product instead holds futures contracts for exposure and does not directly own Bitcoin or Ether. Its outcome can depend on how it implements that exposure and manages collateral, as well as on the futures market. Comparing its expense ratio or return with a spot trust without accounting for that structural difference can be misleading.

Compare recurring costs and trading costs separately

Read the latest prospectus for the sponsor or management fee, total annual operating expenses, acquired fund fees and expenses, other expenses, and any waiver or reimbursement. A headline management fee is not necessarily the full recurring cost. Also check the waiver’s conditions and end date; an old net expense figure may no longer apply.

Prospectuses disclose brokerage charges separately from fund operating expenses. Your own transaction costs can also include the bid-ask spread, so a low expense ratio does not automatically make a fund cheaper to buy or sell.

Product example Structure and dated expense disclosure What to verify before relying on the figure
CoinShares Bitcoin and Ether ETF (BTF) The January 22, 2026 prospectus describes a futures-based fund that does not directly invest in Bitcoin or Ether. It lists 1.27% total annual operating expenses: 0.95% management fees, 0.03% acquired fund fees and expenses, and 0.29% other expenses. Check the current prospectus for updated expenses and terms. The 1.27% figure is the disclosure in that dated filing, not a comparison with spot products.
ProShares Bitcoin & Ether Equal Weight ETF The September 26, 2025 summary prospectus lists 0.95% expenses after a waiver or reimbursement scheduled through September 30, 2026. It is futures-based. That scheduled waiver date has passed as of October 7, 2026. The cited disclosure does not establish the current net expense; verify the latest filing rather than treating 0.95% as current.

These examples illustrate why expense figures need their filing dates and waiver terms attached. They do not establish which Bitcoin or Ether product currently has the lowest fee.

Check who holds the crypto and what the disclosures say

For a spot trust, look up the named crypto custodian and cash custodian in the current prospectus and review the safeguarding, operational, and custody-risk disclosures. Do not infer the custodian from the ticker or sponsor’s brand. The SEC says spot crypto ETPs are outside the Investment Company Act’s custody requirements, among other requirements that apply to registered investment companies; read the fund’s own filings to understand its arrangements and risks.

For a futures product, examine its derivatives and collateral arrangements instead. It does not hold the underlying Bitcoin or Ether directly, so a list of crypto custodians is not a substitute for understanding how its futures exposure and collateral work.

Custody details can change. As one dated example, an August 2026 ARK 21Shares Bitcoin ETF prospectus supplement names Coinbase Custody, BitGo, Anchorage, and BitGo New York as Bitcoin custodians. The same supplement records a benchmark change effective August 27, 2026. Treat those details as specific to that filing and date, not as a general description of other funds or necessarily the fund’s terms indefinitely.

Read liquidity as several different measures

Liquidity is not one number. Compare the bid-ask spread, trading volume, assets under management (AUM), and the share price’s premium or discount to net asset value (NAV). Use the same date or measurement period where possible:

  • Bid-ask spread: the gap between the best available buying and selling prices. A wider spread can raise the cost of an immediate trade; the spread you face can vary with order size and market conditions.
  • Trading volume: the amount of shares traded over a period. It describes activity, not the price impact or cost of your particular order.
  • AUM: the value of assets in the product. A larger AUM figure by itself does not establish that a specific trade will be inexpensive to execute.
  • Premium or discount to NAV: whether shares trade above or below the fund’s per-share net asset value. This is distinct from the bid-ask spread.

A CoinShares issuer snapshot dated October 2, 2026 reported for BTF a 2.02% 30-day median bid-ask spread, a 2.15% discount to NAV, and $16,866,127.94 in AUM. These are dated figures for one futures-based fund, not a current-market ranking or a forecast of the cost of your trade. Check live market data and the fund’s current disclosures before making a decision.

Also review the prospectus’s creation and redemption description. It helps explain how shares are issued or removed, but it does not guarantee that your own shares will trade at NAV or that a particular order will execute at a favorable price.

Compare tracking on matched dates and against the right benchmark

For a spot trust, identify the benchmark or index in its current prospectus, how the asset is valued, and the valuation time. Compare the fund’s performance with that benchmark over matching dates, and distinguish the trust’s NAV return from the price return you would experience through exchange-traded shares.

For a futures fund, a comparison with the spot price alone is incomplete because the fund holds futures rather than the crypto asset itself. Review the fund’s stated benchmark, futures implementation, collateral, and expenses, then compare performance over the same dates. Do not assume that a Bitcoin and an Ether product use equivalent benchmarks or valuation methods.

Tracking is not exact or guaranteed. The SEC’s Investor.gov bulletin notes that share prices can deviate from the crypto asset’s price; it identifies factors including changing demand for shares, issuer-related issues, and broader crypto-market events. A benchmark may also change: the ARK 21Shares supplement described above records its switch from the CME CF Bitcoin Reference Rate – New York Variant to the FTSE Bitcoin Index on August 27, 2026. Recheck the current benchmark rather than relying on an older comparison.

A practical comparison checklist

  1. Set the scope. Decide whether you are comparing U.S. spot trusts, futures-based funds, or products within one structure. Specify Bitcoin, Ether, or a fund with exposure to both.
  2. Open the latest prospectus and supplements. Confirm what the product holds, its benchmark, valuation method, fee breakdown, waiver terms, custodians or derivatives arrangements, and material risks.
  3. Normalize the costs. Compare total recurring operating expenses on the same basis and date. Keep brokerage charges and the spread you may pay to trade separate.
  4. Use dated liquidity data. Compare spread, volume, AUM, and premium or discount to NAV over matching periods; do not treat any one metric as a substitute for the others.
  5. Match tracking periods. Compare the fund’s return with its stated benchmark over the same dates, and account for the difference between spot holdings and futures exposure.
  6. Read the risk disclosures. Consider the possibility of substantial volatility and loss, operational or custody risks, and the limits of protections that apply to registered investment companies.

Understand the risks behind the label

The SEC describes Bitcoin and Ether as highly speculative and warns of volatility, possible loss, and fraud or manipulation risks in underlying crypto markets. Exchange listing or SEC filings do not mean the SEC endorses a product or guarantees its performance. The SEC also notes that spot crypto ETPs are not subject to Investment Company Act requirements such as that law’s fund valuation and custody rules. For product-specific risks, use the current prospectus and periodic reports rather than relying on the word “ETF.”
