How to Compare Two Video Game Franchises Before Buying

Compare the games you would actually play, not the reputations of their logos. Start by fixing your platform, budget, preferred modes, content limits and available time. Then choose one realistic entry from each franchise, examine its core play loop and story requirements, verify the exact edition and current price, and select the series that best matches your priorities. There is no reliable universal winner without knowing the two franchises and the buyer’s circumstances.

This method works whether you are choosing between two long-running single-player series, two multiplayer ecosystems or two collections on a specific console. It also prevents common mistakes such as buying a highly praised sequel you cannot access, comparing a short campaign with a completionist estimate, or starting a story-heavy series in an order that creates spoilers.

1. Set your buying constraints before looking at reviews

A franchise comparison is useful only after you define what “fits” means for you. Write down the constraints that can eliminate a game before its quality matters. A genre label is a starting filter, not a dependable description of the moment-to-moment experience; two games marketed in the same genre can differ sharply in pace, combat, exploration, difficulty and narrative focus.

Platform and hardware

List the systems you already own and any hardware you are willing to buy. Record whether you need a native current-generation version, a backward-compatible release, a handheld edition or a PC build. A series may have the same name on several platforms while offering different performance, controls, downloadable content or online requirements. If one candidate requires hardware you will not obtain, remove it from the comparison rather than treating its theoretical quality as a benefit.

Preferred play style

Describe the actions you want to repeat for hours: precise combat, character builds, driving, investigation, resource management, exploration, puzzle solving, competitive matches or cooperative missions. Also note whether you prefer a fast or deliberate pace, open areas or linear stages, and frequent action or long stretches of story. These details are more predictive of satisfaction than a broad label such as “role-playing game” or “shooter.”

Solo, co-op and competitive requirements

Decide whether the purchase must work alone, with a specific friend group, or in ranked or unranked competition. Check whether the mode is included in the edition you are considering and whether online play requires a platform subscription. A franchise built around seasonal or competitive play has a different time commitment from a self-contained solo campaign, even when both are sold as full-price games.

Content boundaries and accessibility

Record content you want to avoid, such as graphic violence, horror themes, sexual content, gambling-like mechanics or intense language. Check the age rating and content descriptors for the exact regional listing, not a trailer or an overseas edition. Review available settings for subtitles, text size, color options, aim assistance, difficulty selection, remappable controls and other accommodations when those features affect your ability to play.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Budget and time

Set a maximum price and a realistic weekly time budget. Include the cost of required expansions, a subscription, a second controller or an online service if the game needs them. Decide whether you want one finished campaign or an ongoing service that can absorb hundreds of hours. These constraints should be written before you see review scores so excitement does not quietly change the rules.

2. Choose representative entries instead of comparing franchise logos

Do not compare two decades of catalogues as if each series were one consistent product. Select a plausible first purchase from each franchise. For a new player, that may be the latest self-contained mainline game, a clearly labeled remake or the first title in a connected arc. If the newest release assumes earlier knowledge, choose an earlier entry and state why.

How to select a fair candidate

  1. Identify the mainline path. Separate numbered releases from remasters, remakes, expansions, mobile editions and spin-offs.
  2. Match the role of each game. Compare a mainline campaign with a mainline campaign, or a competitive title with another competitive title. Do not place a short spin-off against a 100-hour flagship game unless that difference is the question you are answering.
  3. Confirm the version. Note the platform, release year, edition name, performance mode and included downloadable content.
  4. Inspect actual play. Watch an unedited gameplay segment or read a detailed review that discusses the specific version. Look for the repeated actions, menu friction, mission structure and amount of downtime—not just cinematics or a launch trailer.

The practical guidance in iTechGuides’ video-game buying checklist similarly emphasizes checking gameplay and reviews for the individual title. Use that evidence to test whether the candidate delivers the experience you described in your constraints.

007 First Light - Specialist Edition - PlayStation 5
  • ONLY AT AMAZON - SPECIALIST EDITION
  • EARN THE NUMBER - Discover a new James Bond origin story, and the events that led a young maverick to become the best MI6 agent.
  • A THRILLING ESPIONAGE ADVENTURE - Embark on missions in breathtaking locations, drive iconic vehicles, and dive into a cinematic adventure in pursuit of a rogue agent who’s always one step ahead.
  • SPYING, YOUR WAY - Go silent or go loud. Whether fighting with fists or firepower, using gadgets to infiltrate, or bluffing your way past guards, the approach is entirely up to you.

What to observe in gameplay

  • Core loop: What do you do every few minutes, and how often does that activity change?
  • Pace: How quickly does the game move from input to reward, and how long are travel, dialogue or menu sections?
  • Systems: Are upgrades, equipment, crafting, stealth, driving or party management central or optional?
  • Structure: Does the game use linear missions, open zones, a hub, repeated matches or a campaign divided into chapters?
  • Failure and recovery: How often do you restart, and how much progress is lost?
  • Modes: Is the same content playable solo, cooperatively or competitively, and are there mode-specific restrictions?

3. Map the series structure and decide where to start

Entry order matters most when a franchise has recurring characters, a continuing plot, hidden reveals or mechanics that evolve from one release to the next. First determine whether the series has numbered mainline games, side stories, remasters, remakes, alternate timelines or mostly self-contained entries.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Release order versus chronological order

Release order follows when the games were made available. It usually reflects how the creators introduced mechanics, characters and reveals to the audience. Chronological order follows the fictional timeline and can place a prequel before a game that was released earlier. Neither order is automatically correct.

For a series with major reveals or changing mechanics, release order is usually the safer default because it preserves the intended discovery and avoids assuming that a prequel was designed as an introduction. Chronological order can make sense when the stories are self-contained, when you value the in-world timeline above reveal structure, or when a publisher explicitly presents that order as the recommended route.

Independent tracker PlatPrices’ PlayStation series index displays release and chronological orders where applicable. Its catalogue is limited to the PS4 and PS5 games it tracks, so treat its lists as a reference for that scope rather than a complete history of every platform.

Answering “best game first?”

Starting with the most acclaimed game can be sensible when entries are largely independent and you want to test the series quickly. It can be a poor choice when that game assumes knowledge of earlier events, introduces advanced systems without teaching their foundations or makes older entries feel unnecessarily dated afterward.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use this decision sequence:

  1. Start with the earliest mainline game only if its story is essential and its controls remain tolerable for you.
  2. Choose a modern remake or remaster when it preserves the important story while fixing accessibility or performance problems.
  3. Choose the most self-contained entry when you want a low-risk trial and the series does not require continuity.
  4. Skip a weak entry only after checking whether later games refer to its characters or unresolved plot. A summary can replace some gameplay, but it cannot reproduce the experience of learning the series’ mechanics in order.

Build a spoiler-aware route

For each candidate, mark whether it contains a direct continuation, optional side stories, or an alternate timeline. Label plot-heavy games that should be played before their sequels. If you decide to skip an entry, read a spoiler-light synopsis rather than a detailed ending explanation, then verify that the next game includes the required tutorials and context.

4. Compare the experience across consistent axes

Use the same questions for both candidates. The table below is a worksheet: fill it with evidence for your two chosen games and the region and platform where you intend to buy.

Comparison axis Evidence to record for each candidate How it affects the decision
Representative game and entry point Title, release type, why it is a fair first purchase Shows what you will actually play rather than an abstract franchise reputation
Core gameplay loop Repeated actions, progression, mission or match structure Reveals whether the moment-to-moment work matches your preferences
Story dependence and order Standalone, connected, remake, alternate timeline; release and chronological route Prevents spoilers and identifies the reading or playing commitment
Genre and pace Subgenre, typical tempo, exploration-to-action balance Separates games that share a marketing label but feel different
Solo, co-op and competitive modes Available modes, party size, online requirement and server dependence Confirms that the game works for your preferred way to play
Difficulty and accessibility Difficulty options, assist features, control and display settings Indicates whether challenge is adjustable and barriers are manageable
Estimated time Campaign, typical completion and completionist estimates measured the same way Matches the commitment to your available time
Platform, version and edition Exact system, performance mode, physical or digital format, included content Exposes compatibility limits and edition differences
Rating and content descriptors Regional age rating and listed content warnings Checks suitability for the player and household
Current regional price and included content Store or retailer price, currency, taxes where shown, expansions and subscription requirements Calculates the real cost at the moment of purchase
Best fit if… The priority this candidate serves better Produces a preference-based recommendation instead of a universal ranking

5. Compare time and difficulty without misleading yourself

Time estimates are meaningful only when their definitions match. Compare campaign with campaign, a normal playthrough with a normal playthrough, and completionist with completionist. Do not use one game’s “main story” figure against another game’s “all achievements” figure.

Trophy trackers can provide a useful reference for completion difficulty and time, but those figures describe the tracked catalogue and its trophy requirements—not the time an ordinary player spends enjoying the game. PlatPrices reports trophy difficulty and time-to-platinum ranges for the PlayStation games it tracks; those measures are not universal standards for game difficulty or total play time. The same service’s franchise count is 226 PlayStation franchises across PS4 and PS5 in its 2026 catalogue, which describes its coverage rather than the whole market.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical time comparison

  1. Record the advertised or reviewed main-story estimate for each candidate.
  2. Record a normal-playthrough estimate that includes optional content you are likely to attempt.
  3. Record a completionist or trophy target only if you genuinely pursue that goal.
  4. Note whether multiplayer seasons, grinding or repeated matches can make the endpoint indefinite.
  5. Compare the estimate with your weekly hours and calculate how many weeks the purchase would occupy.

Difficulty also has several meanings. A game can have demanding combat but generous checkpoints, or simple controls but punishing resource management. Look for selectable modes, assist options, checkpoint frequency, save rules, online skill matching and whether the hardest content is optional. State which measure you are using instead of calling an entire franchise “easy” or “hard.”

6. Verify platform, edition and regional purchase details

Many disappointing purchases are specification errors rather than quality judgments. Open the store or retailer listing for the exact candidate immediately before buying and confirm:

  • Platform and generation, including whether the listing grants access to another version
  • Region, currency, tax treatment and language availability
  • Physical or digital format, download size and whether a disc contains the full game
  • Standard, deluxe, complete or collector edition contents
  • Season pass, expansion, cosmetic bundle and upgrade entitlements
  • Single-player availability, online requirement and any subscription needed for multiplayer
  • Save compatibility, cross-progression and whether servers are required for features you care about
  • Age rating and content descriptors for the local release

A price tracker can help you notice a potential deal, but it is not the final authority. PlatPrices warns that listed prices may be outdated and directs readers to confirm the current amount on PlayStation Store. Use the tracker to identify a candidate price, then verify the live store listing before checkout.

Star Fox™ - Nintendo Switch 2
  • Blast off on a high-octane adventure to save a star system from invasion
  • Tear through space, soar across planets, and shoot loads of foes out of the sky at every step of the way
  • A cinematic take on the Star Fox 64 story, featuring fully voiced dialogue, an epic orchestral soundtrack, and a complete visual overhaul for the Nintendo Switch 2 system
  • Enter first-person mode to experience the action from inside the cockpit, and even use mouse controls to fly
  • Invite a second player* to join you as a gunner using Nintendo Switch 2 mouse controls

Calculate the real first-year cost

For a one-time campaign, add the game, required platform subscription and any expansion you already know you want. For a multiplayer or seasonal game, add recurring subscriptions and the amount you are willing to spend on optional content. Keep “included at launch” separate from “available to buy later”; a complete edition can be cheaper than assembling the same content separately, but only the current listing can establish that price.

7. Use ratings and reviews as evidence, not as a verdict

Aggregate scores compress many different preferences into one number. Read reviews for concrete observations about pacing, controls, bugs, progression, accessibility, online population and the version tested. Give extra weight to reviews that identify the platform, patch level and edition, because a technically strong PC release may not represent a console version with different performance.

Gameplay videos are useful for confirming visual readability, camera behavior, menus and the amount of uninterrupted play. Watch enough to see a complete loop rather than a heavily edited highlight. Avoid deciding from a cinematic trailer, which may not show the systems that occupy most of your time.

8. Turn the evidence into a personal decision

There is no evidence-based weighting that makes one franchise universally superior. Build a small scorecard around your own priorities instead.

Score only what matters

Give each criterion a score from 0 to 5 for each candidate, where 0 means it fails your requirement and 5 means it is an excellent fit. Mark non-negotiables separately: a game that cannot run on your platform or violates a content boundary should be eliminated regardless of its total.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Possible criteria include core loop, story accessibility, campaign length, solo or multiplayer fit, accessibility settings, current total cost, technical performance and replay value. If story continuity is your top concern, give it more weight than a minor price difference. If you have only a few hours each week, give time-to-finish more weight than the size of an endgame.

Best Value
Marvel's Wolverine PS5
  • Marvel’s Wolverine is a new action-packed adventure from Insomniac Games
  • Play as Wolverine and Ravage enemies with explosive brutality and unleash razor-sharp adamantium claws to deploy fast, fluid attacks and overcome impossible odds
  • An Original, Emotionally Charged Story. Beneath Wolverine’s gruff exterior and violent temperament is a man fighting for a cause greater than himself
  • A Global, Adrenaline-Fueled Journey where you slice into enemies across detailed locales such as the frosted Canadian Wilderness, the narrow streets of Tokyo, and the high and low districts of the island nation of Madripoor

Use “best fit if” statements

Write a sentence for each series rather than declaring a winner:

  • Choose the first series if you want a connected story, are comfortable following a release-order route and can commit to its longer campaign.
  • Choose the second series if you want a self-contained entry, adjustable difficulty and a lower verified cost on the platform you already own.

Replace those conditions with the priorities you actually recorded. This wording makes trade-offs visible and remains valid when prices or patches change.

9. Common comparison mistakes and how to correct them

Comparing reputations instead of games

A celebrated franchise can contain entries with different developers, modes and design goals. Correct this by naming one representative game per side and comparing its loop, structure and version.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using incompatible time estimates

“Main story” and “completionist” are different measurements. Correct this by recording equivalent categories and stating whether the source measures campaign, trophies or optional content.

Ignoring the purchase edition

A standard release may omit expansions or a next-generation upgrade that another listing includes. Correct this by copying the exact edition name and included-content list from the store page at checkout.

Treating a tracker as live pricing

Independent catalogues can lag behind sales, regional changes or delistings. Correct this by using them for discovery and confirming the amount on the current platform store.

Starting a connected series with a prequel automatically

Chronological order can spoil reveals or assume familiarity with later mechanics. Correct this by checking both orders and choosing release order when discovery and system progression matter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Letting review consensus override a hard constraint

A perfect score cannot compensate for an unsupported platform, inaccessible control scheme or required online mode you will not use. Eliminate non-fitting games before totaling softer preferences.

10. A five-minute pre-purchase checklist

  1. I can play the exact version on hardware I own.
  2. I know whether the candidate is mainline, a remake, a remaster or a spin-off.
  3. I have chosen release or chronological order for a clear reason.
  4. I watched or read evidence about the representative game, not only the franchise.
  5. The mode I want—solo, co-op or competitive—is available under my conditions.
  6. The difficulty and accessibility settings fit my needs.
  7. The time estimate uses the same category for both candidates.
  8. The regional rating and content descriptors are acceptable.
  9. The edition includes the content I expect.
  10. I verified the current price and any subscription or expansion cost on the live store listing.

When a comparison cannot produce a responsible winner

If the two franchises, platform, region and buyer priorities are unspecified, a specific recommendation would be guesswork. The responsible result is a process: narrow the candidates, collect comparable evidence and make the trade-off explicit. Prices, editions, online populations and technical support can change, so revisit those facts at the moment you purchase rather than treating an old comparison as permanent.
