The reliable way to judge a television deal is to match the exact model and screen size, calculate the full delivered price, check that price against recent history, and compare several retailers. A large “was/now” percentage is only a claim until those checks agree. Energy information, delivery terms, returns and warranty can change the value of two otherwise similar offers.
This guide is UK-focused. Consumer-law references describe UK requirements; energy-label arrangements differ between Great Britain and Northern Ireland, so check the rules and label shown for your location.

1. Match the exact television before comparing prices
Start with identity, not the headline discount. Television families often contain several screen sizes, tuners, finishes and regional variants. A price comparison is meaningful only when the listings describe the same model number and the same diagonal size.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRecord the model code and size
Copy the complete model code from each retailer’s specification panel, packaging photograph or manufacturer information. Do not rely on a shortened family name such as “Series 6” or “4K OLED.” Add the screen size, usually expressed in inches, to your notes. UK energy-information guidance treats the model number as part of the product information that identifies an appliance: GOV.UK energy-labelling guidance.

Make a small comparison record before opening sale pages: model code, screen size, condition, colour or finish, included accessories and the date and time you checked it. The full suffix matters because a retailer may list a regional tuner, stand design or finish under an almost identical family name. If a page hides the model number, ask the retailer or use another listing rather than assuming the match.
Check variant details that can change value
- Screen size and resolution.
- The full model suffix, which can indicate a regional tuner, stand or finish.
- Whether the listing is for a new set, refurbished unit, display item or clearance stock.
- Included accessories such as a stand, remote, wall-mount hardware or a promotional bundle.
- The stated warranty provider and length.
- Any condition note, such as damaged packaging or a product that has been opened.
If any of these details differ, treat the listings as different products rather than declaring one cheaper. A lower price for a smaller or refurbished variant is not a saving on the model you intended to buy. A bundle can also make two prices look different even when the televisions themselves are identical, so list the television and extras separately.
2. Compare the total amount you will pay
Use the checkout total, not the large number beside the product photograph. Add unavoidable delivery, installation, recycling or handling charges. Keep optional services—such as a paid installation slot or extended cover—in a separate line so they do not hide the base price.

| Item to record | How it affects the comparison |
|---|---|
| Television price | The advertised amount for the exact model and size. |
| Mandatory delivery or handling | Add it when every buyer must pay it; a headline price that excludes it is incomplete. |
| Required installation or recycling fee | Include only when the retailer makes it compulsory for the offer. |
| Optional extras | List separately so two base offers remain comparable. |
| Total payable at checkout | The figure to compare across retailers. |
The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) summarises the UK rule plainly: “Prices must be clear, complete and accurate.” Its price-transparency summary, updated 7 January 2026, says sellers should provide the total price up front and not reveal unavoidable charges only late in the purchase path.
Check the destination postcode before recording a total. A retailer may show a headline delivery price that changes for a particular area, room-of-choice service or large-item slot. Save a screenshot or note of the final total, because the product page and checkout can display different figures. Compare like with like: a free standard delivery offer should not be compared with a paid room-of-choice service unless that service is something you actually require.
Separate finance from a discount
A monthly payment can make an expensive television look cheaper. Compare the cash price and, if you use finance, the total amount repayable, term and interest separately. Do not count a credit promotion as a lower product price unless the terms genuinely reduce what you pay. Record any eligibility, membership or minimum-spend condition beside the price rather than treating a conditional figure as universal.
3. Test the “was” price against recent history
A “was/now” label and a percentage-off badge describe a reference price chosen by the seller; they do not prove that the current price is unusually low. Look for the model’s recent prices and note whether the current offer is below, near or above its typical level.
Why the reference price needs scrutiny
Which? reported that about 87% of the televisions it examined at Very used a “was” price that was not the most recent price. The analysis covered televisions promoted with “was/now” pricing at Amazon, AO, Argos, Currys and Very between February 2024 and February 2025; it is a finding about that sample and retailer set, not a market-wide rate. The practical implication is not that every promotion is misleading. It is that the “was” figure should be one data point, alongside the model’s recent selling levels and the total you can pay today. A short-lived voucher, bundle or membership price may also make an apparently higher historical figure difficult to compare directly.
A practical history check
- Save the exact model code, size and the date you saw the offer.
- Check a price-history record that covers the same model, not merely a similar product family.
- Look for the lowest and typical prices over recent months, and note whether the line is for a short promotion or a normal selling price.
- Compare the current total delivered price with those figures.
- Record any bundle, voucher or membership condition; a conditional price is not equivalent to an unconditional one.
- Check more than one retailer’s history where possible, because one retailer’s reference price cannot establish the market level.
If a retailer’s “was” price is higher than the model’s recent selling level, judge the saving from the history and the all-in total instead of the advertised percentage. If no dependable history is available, say so in your notes and rely more heavily on direct, same-day retailer comparisons.
4. Compare several retailers, then verify each offer directly
Check multiple independent retailer listings for the same model on the same day. The CMA’s consumer guide says prices can vary significantly even during major sales and recommends checking several retailers to help find the best possible deal: CMA consumer guide, 13 November 2025. Its advice is useful even when all the shops use similar sale language, because delivery charges, stock and conditions can differ.
Use comparison pages as leads, not proof
Comparison services can save time, but the CMA warns that businesses may pay to improve their rankings. Open the retailer’s own page from the result and verify the model code, size, stock status, delivery charge and checkout total. A ranking is not evidence that an offer is cheapest or best value. Prices can also change between a comparison result being collected and your click, so treat the retailer page and checkout as the current record.
Compare the value dimensions together
| Axis | What to check | Decision question |
|---|---|---|
| Product identity | Exact model number, screen size and variant suffix. | Are these genuinely the same television? |
| Total price | Television price plus unavoidable charges. | What will leave my account for the purchase? |
| Price history | Recent levels for the exact model. | Is today’s price low for this product, rather than merely below a high reference? |
| Energy information | Label and product-information data where supplied. | Could a cheaper-to-run set cost less over years of use? |
| Availability and delivery | In-stock status, dispatch window and delivery conditions. | Will it arrive when needed, and are charges unavoidable? |
| Retailer terms | Returns process, warranty and exclusions. | What protection do I receive if the set is faulty or unsuitable? |
Do not combine a low price from one retailer with generous terms from another when making the decision. Write each retailer’s complete offer in its own row, then compare the rows. This prevents a prominent price from overshadowing a missing accessory, a long dispatch estimate or a return condition.
5. Check stock, delivery, returns and warranty before paying
Two identical prices do not represent equal offers if one television is back-ordered or difficult to return. Read the retailer’s current product and checkout pages because these terms change and were not independently verified here.
Availability and delivery
- Confirm that the exact size and model are in stock, rather than available for a future dispatch.
- Note the promised delivery window and whether it is a date or an estimate.
- Check doorstep, room-of-choice and installation conditions; a low price may exclude services you need.
- Save the delivery charge and any surcharge for your postcode in the total-price worksheet.
- Check whether the order can be cancelled if the dispatch date moves beyond the time you need it.
Returns and warranty
Read how the retailer handles unwanted returns, damaged-on-arrival sets and warranty claims. Check who provides the warranty, how long it lasts, whether collection is available for a large television and whether refurbished or display stock has different cover. These terms can outweigh a small price difference, especially for a heavy or fragile screen.

Keep the listing, order confirmation and checkout terms together. If the delivered television has a different suffix, condition or included equipment from the listing, those records make the discrepancy easier to identify. A low headline price is not useful if returning a large, damaged set is impractical or an advertised accessory is absent.

6. Use energy information as a second cost axis
The purchase price is only one part of ownership. Where an energy label and product information are available, compare the stated energy-use data for the exact model and size. The UK government’s energy-information guidance, updated 8 April 2026, explains label and product-information requirements for products in scope and identifies model and energy-use information as part of that system.
Read the label in the correct jurisdiction
Presentation and applicability differ between Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Use the label supplied for the market in which you are buying; do not assume that a label or database entry from the other jurisdiction is interchangeable. If a listing does not show the relevant information, ask the retailer for the product information rather than inferring consumption from the television family name.
Turn energy data into a useful comparison
Compare televisions of the same size and usage mode. If one set has a lower purchase price but materially higher stated consumption, estimate the running-cost difference using your electricity tariff and expected viewing hours. Keep that estimate separate from the retailer’s discount: it is an ownership-cost calculation, not a sale price. Use the same tariff and viewing assumptions for every model so the comparison is fair, and label the result as an estimate rather than a guaranteed bill.

7. A repeatable deal-check workflow
Use this sequence whenever you see a sale banner, seasonal promotion or “limited-time” price.
- Identify the target. Write down the exact model code, screen size and any suffix or condition note.
- Collect comparable listings. Open several retailers and reject pages that do not show enough information to confirm the match.
- Build the all-in total. Add compulsory delivery and other unavoidable charges; record optional extras separately.
- Check the history. Compare the current total with recent prices for that exact model and size.
- Interrogate the promotion. Read the conditions behind vouchers, membership prices, bundles, trade-in credits and finance.
- Check practical value. Confirm stock, delivery timing, returns, warranty and energy information.
- Verify at checkout. Recheck the model, total and terms immediately before payment because online prices and stock are volatile.
- Save evidence. Keep the product page, checkout total and terms for your records in case the delivered item differs from the offer.
If the checks produce conflicting signals, pause rather than averaging them mentally. For example, a low current price with no stock date is not equivalent to a slightly higher price that is available when needed; a large percentage discount with a high delivered total is not automatically better than a modest discount at a lower total.
8. How to interpret common discount claims
“50% off”
Calculate the current all-in price and compare it with the model’s recent history. The percentage is useful only if the reference price reflects a recent, genuine selling level.
“Lowest ever”
Look for a dated price record and confirm that the claim applies to the same model and size. A family name or different regional suffix is not enough.

Bundle and voucher offers
Value included accessories only if you would otherwise buy them and the bundle lists them clearly. A voucher that requires a membership, minimum spend or later redemption should not be treated as an immediate reduction in the television’s cash price. If the voucher is redeemed later, record its timing and conditions separately from today’s payable total.

An AI assistant can help locate model codes, organise a comparison sheet or explain an energy label. It may have stale prices, confuse similar suffixes or omit delivery charges. The CMA advises verifying AI-generated recommendations with the retailer. Open the retailer’s current page, confirm the exact product and calculate the checkout total yourself before buying.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11The same caution applies to a broad search such as “4K smart TV.” It can locate products, but it does not identify a particular model, guarantee a live price or establish that a television is the right fit. Use it as a starting point, then apply the model, total-price and history checks to each candidate.
10. Choose the deal that fits your priorities
There is no universal “best deal.” After the identity and total-price checks, decide which trade-off matters to you:
- Lowest immediate spend: choose the lowest verified all-in price for the exact model, provided stock and return terms are acceptable.
- Lowest ownership cost: weigh the purchase price against energy information and your expected usage.
- Fast replacement: give delivery certainty and in-stock status more weight than a small discount.
- Lower risk: prefer clear returns, accessible warranty support and a seller whose terms you can verify.
- Specific features: compare only televisions that match the required size, connections or other specifications; a cheaper incompatible set is not a deal.
Write down the priority before comparing prices. That prevents a dramatic discount label from overriding a requirement that actually matters to you. If two offers remain close, choose the one whose price, stock and terms are easiest to verify rather than assuming the larger “saving” is superior.
11. What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you
The 87% “was” price finding is a warning about the sample studied by Which?, not proof that 87% of all television promotions are misleading. Likewise, government guidance explains how prices and energy information should be presented; it does not identify a current cheapest retailer or certify a particular model. Prices, availability and retailer terms change, so the final decision must be based on the live listing and checkout details for your purchase.
Bottom line
A genuine television bargain survives four checks: exact model and size, complete delivered price, recent price history and a direct comparison with other retailers. Then check energy information, delivery, returns and warranty. If the offer fails any of those checks, treat the discount headline as marketing rather than proof of a saving.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best way to compare the same TV model from its standard price to a sale price?
Record the complete model code and screen size, calculate the current checkout total including unavoidable charges, compare that figure with recent prices for the exact model, and check several retailers directly. Treat the “was” price and percentage-off label as claims that need this context.

Is a “was/now” price proof that a TV is a bargain?
No. Which? found that about 87% of the televisions it examined at Very used a “was” price that was not the most recent price. That result applies to the examined sample, so use price history and same-day retailer comparisons instead of relying on the reference price alone.
What charges belong in a TV price comparison?
Include the television price and every unavoidable delivery, handling, installation or recycling charge. List optional installation, extended cover and other extras separately. The meaningful comparison is the total payable at checkout for the exact product.
Can I trust the order of results on a comparison website?
Use comparison pages as leads. The CMA warns that businesses may pay to improve rankings, so open the retailer’s page and verify the model, stock, delivery charge and checkout total yourself.
How do I compare energy costs between televisions?
Use the energy label and product information for the exact model and size where available. Compare the stated consumption using the same viewing hours and electricity tariff, and keep any running-cost estimate separate from the sale discount. Check whether the label is appropriate for Great Britain or Northern Ireland.
What should I check if two retailers have the same price?
Compare stock status, delivery date or estimate, postcode charges, returns for unwanted or damaged sets, warranty provider and length, and whether the listing is new, refurbished or display stock. These terms can make one otherwise identical offer more useful or less risky.
Should a membership price, voucher or finance offer count as the TV’s price?
Record the unconditional cash price first. Note membership eligibility, minimum spend, later voucher redemption and finance interest or total repayment separately. A conditional or deferred benefit is not the same as an immediate reduction in the amount payable.

What should I do when an AI assistant recommends a TV deal?
Use the recommendation to find model codes or organise comparisons, but verify it on the retailer’s current page. AI can have stale prices, confuse suffixes or omit delivery charges; confirm the exact product and checkout total before paying.
The Bottom Line
A real TV deal is the lowest verified total for the exact model and size after checking recent history, other retailers, energy information and retailer terms. A dramatic “was/now” label alone is not evidence of a saving.
