For a like-for-like US comparison, Samsung’s March 2026 MSRP is $899.99 for a 256GB Galaxy S26 and $859.99 for a 256GB Galaxy S25: a $40 difference before offers, taxes, financing, service plans, or other costs. Your actual total depends on where you buy, what trade-in or bill-credit terms you qualify for, and how long you keep the phone.
Start with the same storage capacity
Samsung’s March 2026 US MSRP list gives these unlocked prices:

The cleanest comparison is the 256GB pair: the S26 is $40 more at MSRP. Comparing the lowest listed prices—$799.99 for the 128GB S25 and $899.99 for the 256GB S26—mixes storage capacities, so the $100 gap is not a same-storage comparison. Samsung notes that MSRP prices may change without notice.
These are list prices, not necessarily checkout prices. Samsung’s product page accessed for this comparison displayed the 256GB S26 at $799.99 against $899.99, but that was an AT&T-configured page. It does not establish a current unlocked price or an Amazon price. Treat a displayed deal as specific to its page, date, configuration, and eligibility rather than a guaranteed offer.

Calculate the total over the same ownership period
Choose a time horizon—for example, the number of months you expect to keep each phone—and use the same horizon and end-of-period assumption for both. Count actual costs and credits, not just advertised device prices.
Total ownership cost = device payments after eligible discounts and trade-in + financing charges + required plan cost + mandatory fees and taxes + protection or upgrade charges − credits actually received.
If comparing unlocked phones while you would keep the same mobile plan either way, the plan cost is common to both options and can be left out of the price difference. Include it when a carrier deal requires a more expensive plan or a minimum service commitment. State whether you will keep, sell, or trade in the phone at the end; if you include an expected resale value, base it on a current source rather than a guess.

MSRP-only example
For a 256GB-to-256GB comparison with no offer, trade-in, financing charge, plan difference, taxes, fees, or accessories included, the MSRP-only device-cost difference is $899.99 − $859.99 = $40. This is a baseline calculation, not a prediction of your final bill.

Use the same units in both columns: total dollars over the selected period, not one phone’s full price against the other phone’s monthly installment. For monthly bill credits, count only the credits you expect to receive during that period and account for what happens if you cancel service or pay off early.
Compare unlocked purchases and carrier deals fairly
Unlocked purchase
Record the price for the exact capacity and configuration at checkout, then add the taxes and required fees shown there. If you would use the same service plan with either phone, keep that plan outside the comparison or include it equally in both totals. Check whether the advertised price depends on a trade-in or another condition.

Carrier financing and bill credits
A carrier’s headline “up to” trade-in or credit is not equivalent to cash unless you qualify and meet its conditions. Before comparing it with an unlocked phone, identify:
- The qualifying plan and its price for the full period you are comparing.
- The required trade-in model, condition rules, eligibility, and submission deadline.
- Whether the trade-in reduces the phone price immediately or arrives as recurring bill credits.
- The device-financing term, monthly payment, and any financing charge.
- The credit amount and schedule, including what happens if you cancel the line, switch plans, or pay off the device early.
- Taxes, activation charges, shipping, and other mandatory checkout fees.
Count credits only for the months you expect to satisfy the offer terms. If leaving early would end the credits, compare that outcome too when your plans may change. Do not use launch-period offers as though they remain available: Samsung’s February 25–March 11, 2026 S26 pre-order promotions have ended.
Include financing, protection, and upgrade charges only when they apply
Financing
Compare the total repayment under the terms actually offered to you, not just the monthly payment. Samsung’s New Galaxy Club page states that pay-over-time rates may range from 0% to 36% APR; eligibility and the rate offered to an individual buyer are not established by that range. The page also describes Affirm Pay in 4 at 0% APR, subject to eligibility and availability. Use the disclosed APR, term, and total repayment for your own checkout.

Upgrade programs and Care+
Samsung’s New Galaxy Club page gives example charges of $6.20 per month for an eligible Galaxy S25 and $8.33 per month for an eligible S25+ or S25 Ultra. The program requires at least 12 monthly payments before an upgrade. Its page describes availability for selected S25 models before June 20, 2025, excludes carrier-financed purchases, and says one year of Samsung Care+ benefits is included; from month 13, the full then-current Care+ fee applies unless canceled. These terms do not make the program a universal S25 or S26 ownership cost. Include it only if your model, enrollment date, purchase route, and current terms qualify, and verify the remaining balance, upgrade, and cancellation conditions.
Likewise, add Samsung Care+ or another protection plan only if you expect to buy it, using its actual price and the same coverage period for each phone. Samsung’s February 2026 launch announcement also described a $150 Samsung credit for certain no-trade-in pre-orders, usable on eligible additional products rather than the phone itself and subject to purchase and return conditions. That time-limited offer is over; do not subtract it from a current phone price.

Replacing an S25 with an S26 may involve accessory costs. Tom’s Guide’s March 20, 2026 comparison reports that the S26 is slightly larger and that an S25 case will not fit the S26. Because fit depends on the exact case and phone, treat a replacement case as a possible cost and check your accessory rather than assuming every buyer must replace it.

If you already own an S25, compare the net cost of switching with the value of keeping it—not only with the S25’s original MSRP. Any resale or trade-in estimate should be current, model-specific, and conditional on your device’s condition and eligibility. Do not count the same S25 value twice as both a trade-in credit and a resale return.
Make the decision from your own quote
- Match capacity. Compare 256GB with 256GB where possible; otherwise write down the storage difference.
- Collect dated prices. Save checkout quotes for the exact models and purchase route, separating MSRP from temporary offers.
- Verify trade-in terms. Confirm your device qualifies, its condition meets the rules, and when and how value is credited.
- Use one ownership horizon. Add installments, service costs, and recurring charges over the same number of months.
- Check total financing and fees. Record APR, total repayment, taxes, activation, and other mandatory charges.
- Add only real extras. Include protection, upgrade-program charges, or a replacement case only if they apply to your purchase.
- Set the end point. Decide whether you will keep, sell, or trade in each phone at the end, and use a supported value if you include one.
Your final comparison is the difference between the two completed totals. A $40 matched-capacity MSRP gap can widen, narrow, or reverse after buyer-specific discounts, required service, financing, taxes, fees, and credits are applied.
