It is the model that produces an acceptable result for your defined task at the lowest cost per successful task. To find it, run the same representative workload on each qualifying model, apply the same success test, record every billed input, output, cache, tool and media unit, and divide total spend by the number of successful completions.
What “cost” should mean in an AI-model comparison
Provider price cards normally quote a rate per million tokens or another metered unit. That rate is only one input to a task-level comparison. A model can be cheaper per token yet require longer prompts, produce more output, call more tools, or need more retries. A more expensive model may finish correctly on the first attempt.

Use cost per successful task as the primary number:
cost per successful task = total measured spend across all test attempts ÷ number of attempts that meet the success criterion

“Successful” must be defined before testing. For a document extractor, it might mean every required field is present and valid. For a coding assistant, it could mean the patch passes a specified test suite without manual fixes. For a support reply, it might require factual accuracy, policy compliance and an approval score.
This measure counts failed attempts and retries, rather than presenting the price of only the best-looking output. It also lets you show the trade-off between cost, quality and speed instead of declaring a universal cheapest provider.
Define the task before looking at prices
Write a workload specification
Record the shape of a normal request, not an idealized short prompt. Include:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Typical and maximum input size, including documents, conversation history and retrieved context.
- Required output format, length, schema, language and safety constraints.
- Whether the request includes images, audio, video or other non-text media.
- Tools such as search, code execution, retrieval, function calls or external APIs.
- Acceptable end-to-end latency and whether asynchronous processing is acceptable.
- Expected region, data-residency requirements, privacy rules and availability needs.
- Expected volume, peak traffic and the proportion of difficult cases.
A small prompt used for a demo can produce a misleading forecast if production requests contain long histories, retrieved pages or large attachments.
Set a pass/fail rubric
Use the same rubric for every candidate. State which errors are fatal, which are tolerable and who evaluates the result. Human review, an automated test, or a hybrid score can all work, but the method and threshold must remain constant. If human correction is required for a result to count, log that correction and its time separately so the economics are visible.
Separate hard constraints from preferences
Exclude a model that cannot meet a non-negotiable requirement, such as the required context size, modality, region or tool interface. There is no useful price comparison between a model that can complete the job and one that cannot. Preferences such as slightly lower latency or a nicer writing style belong in the quality-and-cost trade-off after eligibility is established.
The cost formula
For a single run, calculate each metered component at the rate that applies to the selected model and service tier:
estimated cost per run = (uncached input tokens × input rate + cached input tokens × cached-input rate + output tokens × output rate) ÷ provider token unit + metered tool, modality, storage and other applicable charges

Providers commonly quote rates per million tokens, so the provider token unit in that expression is often 1,000,000. Use the exact unit and currency in the current pricing table. Do not combine a standard input price with a batch output price, or a text rate with an audio rate.
| Component | What to record | Why it changes the result |
|---|---|---|
| Uncached input | Tokens sent without an eligible cache read | Long prompts and retrieved context can dominate spend. |
| Cached input | Tokens served from an accepted cache, plus any cache-write or storage charge | Cache reads may be cheaper, but eligibility, retention and hit rate vary. |
| Output | Tokens generated, including structured fields and tool arguments where billed | Verbose answers can cost more even with identical inputs. |
| Tools | Searches, function calls, code execution, retrieved-content tokens and tool-generated input | A “free” model call can trigger separately metered services. |
| Media | Image, audio or video units and any conversion charges | Non-text modalities may use different units and rates. |
| Processing mode | Standard, batch, flex, priority or regional-processing tier | The same model can have different rates, latency and availability by tier. |
| Other charges | Storage, minimums, taxes, account terms or infrastructure billed outside tokens | These can matter at production volume and are not part of a token-only estimate. |
For a test set, sum the complete spend for every attempt. Then divide by the number of attempts that pass. A model with eight successful results from ten runs is evaluated on all ten runs, not on the eight selected outputs.
A repeatable comparison workflow
- Define the task. Write the input shape, output requirements, success threshold, context size, latency target, modalities and tools.
- Select eligible candidates. Keep only models that satisfy quality, modality, context, region, privacy and integration constraints. Record the exact model and version.
- Build a representative test set. Use identical instructions and cases for every candidate. Include ordinary requests, difficult examples and known failure modes. Repeat enough cases to expose variation; a single prompt is not a benchmark.
- Run under declared conditions. Fix temperature or other generation settings where the API allows it. Record processing tier, region, time, queue behavior and any asynchronous mode.
- Capture usage and outcomes. Log input, output, cached usage, cache writes, tool calls, media units, latency, success or failure, retries and any human correction.
- Apply the rate card. Convert each measured unit using the rate for that model, tier and date. Add separately billed search, storage, tool or media charges.
- Report task economics. Show total test spend, number of runs, successful completions, cost per success, latency and quality scores. State the sample size and assumptions.
- Project only after measuring. Scale a representative cost per successful task to expected volume, then model retries, workload mix, cache hit rate and peaks. Label the result as an estimate.
What to measure in every run
Application logs and provider usage records should be joined by a request ID. At minimum, retain the following fields:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
| Field | Example entry |
|---|---|
| Model and version | Exact model identifier, not merely a family name |
| Input and output usage | Uncached input tokens, cached input tokens and generated tokens |
| Cache events | Cache write, cache read, hit or miss, retention period and charge |
| Tool and modality usage | Search count, retrieved tokens, function calls, image/audio/video units |
| Processing conditions | Standard, batch, flex or priority; region; synchronous or asynchronous |
| Outcome | Pass/fail under the declared rubric and reason for failure |
| Operational data | End-to-end latency, queue time, timeout, retry and human-edit time |
Do not infer usage from character counts or dashboard averages when an API supplies authoritative token counts. Averages can hide a small number of very large prompts or expensive tool calls.
Worked rate-card examples
The following arithmetic illustrates the method; it is not a cross-provider quality benchmark. Public prices change, so the figures were checked on October 13, 2026 and should be rechecked against the applicable pricing page before use.
Gemini 3.1 Flash-Lite illustration
The Gemini API pricing page lists Gemini 3.1 Flash-Lite Standard text, image and video input at $0.25 per million tokens and output at $1.50 per million tokens. Suppose one text request uses 100,000 input tokens and generates 2,000 output tokens, with no cache, tools or media charges:
- Input: 0.1 million × $0.25 = $0.025.
- Output: 0.002 million × $1.50 = $0.003.
- Illustrative token total: $0.028 per run.
The same page lists Batch rates of $0.125 per million input tokens and $0.75 per million output tokens for that model. Under the same hypothetical usage, the token total would be $0.014, before any other applicable charge. Batch eligibility, queue time and workload timing must fit the task; the lower rate does not automatically make it suitable.

GPT-5.4 batch illustration
OpenAI’s GPT-5.4 model page lists batch input at $2.50 per million tokens, cached input at $0.25 per million and output at $15.00 per million. Using the same hypothetical 100,000 uncached input tokens and 2,000 output tokens gives $0.25 plus $0.03, or $0.28 in token charges. This is a model- and batch-specific example, not a rate for every model or API tier. The page also documents a different long-context price condition for prompts above 272,000 input tokens, so a large-context workload must be priced under that condition rather than this simple example.

From run cost to successful-task cost
Assume, purely as an illustration, that ten test attempts consume $1.20 in all billed charges and eight meet the rubric. The measured cost per successful completion is $1.20 ÷ 8 = $0.15. If two failures require human rework or another model call in production, include those costs in the workflow estimate instead of treating the eight successes as the only spend.
Provider pricing dimensions that commonly change the answer
Batch, flex and priority processing
Batch or asynchronous services can reduce token rates but add queue time and may impose request-size, completion-window or availability rules. Priority processing can improve latency while costing more. Flex-style options may trade guaranteed capacity for lower prices. Test the mode your production workflow can actually use; do not apply a batch discount to interactive traffic that cannot wait.
Caching
Repeated system instructions, long reference material and stable tool context may qualify for caching. Measure cache-write charges, read rates, retention and hit rate. A forecast that assumes a 100% hit rate will understate cost when requests vary or entries expire. OpenAI publishes separate input and cached-input rates, and Gemini’s pricing page documents context caching; the exact eligibility and prices are model-specific.
Tools and grounding
Tool use can add both a per-call fee and additional tokens. Anthropic’s Claude pricing documentation lists web search at $10 per 1,000 searches plus standard token costs for search-generated content; tool use and tool-generated input can also increase usage. Google’s Gemini pricing page lists $14 per 1,000 Google Search grounding requests after the stated shared monthly allowance, subject to that page’s eligibility and model details. Count the searches and retrieved content in the same task ledger as model tokens.
Modalities
A text-token estimate does not price an audio or video workflow. Gemini’s pricing page lists separate audio pricing, while text, image and video input for Gemini 3.1 Flash-Lite Standard share the cited input rate. Confirm the exact modality unit, conversion step and output format for your model version.
API surface and regional terms
OpenAI’s documentation states that the Responses, Chat Completions, Realtime, Batch and Assistants APIs are not priced separately; tokens are billed at the selected model’s rates. That does not eliminate differences in modality, tool or processing charges. Regional processing, data-residency commitments, contractual discounts, taxes and availability can differ from public list pricing and must be added when they apply to your account.
Compare candidates on more than token price
| Axis | Measure or verify | Decision question |
|---|---|---|
| Cost per successful task | All billed usage across attempts ÷ successful completions | What does an accepted result really cost? |
| Output quality | Same cases, rubric and evaluator | Does the cheaper result meet the requirement without extra correction? |
| Input/output profile | Actual tokens per task | Will production prompts or answers be longer than the test set? |
| Caching | Eligibility, write/read rates, hit rate and storage | Are repeated contexts genuinely reusable? |
| Tools and modalities | Calls, retrieved content and media units | Are ancillary charges larger than model-token charges? |
| Latency and throughput | End-to-end time, queue effects and concurrency | Can the service meet the user-facing or batch deadline? |
| Context and limits | Context ceiling, price thresholds and supported inputs | Will large or multimodal cases remain eligible? |
| Deployment constraints | Region, residency, privacy, availability and service level | Can the model legally and operationally run in this workflow? |
| Volume and billing mode | Traffic, minimums, free-tier boundaries and effective date | Does the selected discount still apply at expected scale? |
Present the result as a cost-quality frontier when models differ materially. A single “winner” hides whether a modest extra cost buys a much higher success rate or whether a cheap model needs costly retries.

A useful projection includes:
- Expected successful volume by task type.
- Observed retry and failure rates, including fallback-model calls.
- Input, output and cache-hit distributions, not only means.
- Peak concurrency and the processing tier needed during peaks.
- Tool, search, media, storage and retrieval charges.
- Human review or correction time when the workflow requires it.
Keep unrelated infrastructure or fixed platform costs outside the token calculation unless you have measured and intentionally included them. Report both a variable per-task figure and any fixed monthly commitments so readers can see the break-even point.
A 2025 arXiv preprint proposes “Levelized Cost of Artificial Intelligence” (LCOAI), which normalizes capital and operating costs by productive inference volume and discusses API and self-hosted scenarios. It is a framework for broader total-cost analysis, not an established industry standard. Use it as a way to think about deployment economics, not as a universal benchmark.
Common comparison mistakes and fixes
Choosing the lowest input-token rate
Why it fails: Output, retries, tools and quality differences can outweigh input savings.
Recommended Free Tools
Fix: Calculate total spend per successful task on the same test set.
Comparing different workloads
Why it fails: One model may receive a short prompt while another receives full history and retrieved context.
Fix: Freeze instructions, context, attachments and generation settings for each case.
Counting only successful attempts
Why it fails: Failures and retries are real production spend.
Fix: Log every attempt and divide total spend by successful completions.
Best Value
Ignoring cache and tool billing
Why it fails: A cached prompt or a search call can change the effective price substantially.
Fix: Record cache reads and writes, tool calls, retrieved tokens and media units per request.
Applying a discount universally
Why it fails: Batch, free-tier, regional and promotional terms have eligibility limits and may change.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix: State the service tier, region, date and conditions beside every quoted rate. Treat free access as a temporary boundary, not a permanent commercial price.
Presenting a rate card as a benchmark
Why it fails: Official pricing pages describe billing, not neutral task quality.
Fix: Publish your test cases, rubric, sample size, measured usage and limitations. Do not claim that one provider is cheapest for an unspecified task.
Projecting from one unusually short prompt
Why it fails: Long-tail inputs and peak traffic drive bills and latency.
Fix: Include difficult cases, maximum context tests and a workload distribution that resembles production.
How to decide which model is cheapest for your use case
- Remove models that fail a hard context, modality, region, privacy or integration requirement.
- Run the same representative cases and score them with one rubric.
- Calculate all-in spend for every attempt, including tools, cache, media and retries.
- Divide by successful completions and place the result beside latency and quality.
- Choose the lowest cost per successful task that satisfies your service and quality thresholds.
- Recheck the calculation whenever the model version, rate card, workload mix or processing tier changes.
Because model catalogs and prices change, date-stamp every rate and keep the raw usage log behind the summary. Reverification is especially important for scheduled price changes, long-context thresholds and account-specific terms.
Bottom line
To compare AI-model costs fairly, define one task and one success standard, run identical representative cases, measure every billed unit and divide total spend by successful results. Provider rates such as Gemini 3.1 Flash-Lite’s listed Standard and Batch prices, GPT-5.4’s batch and cached-input figures, or Anthropic’s 50% Batch API discount are useful inputs, but none proves which model is cheapest for your workload. The defensible answer is the model that meets your constraints at the lowest measured cost per successful task on a dated, reproducible test.
