Compare a specific journey, not an abstract vehicle. Match the same endpoints, measure the actual route for each mode, choose one emissions boundary, apply a factor from the same source and year, then adjust for passengers or load. Report both the trip total and the result per passenger-kilometre (pkm), with assumptions beside every figure.
Average rankings are useful context only. The European Environment Agency places rail among the lowest-emission motorised passenger modes, buses and coaches as the most efficient road passenger mode, and cars and passenger flights among the least efficient per passenger-kilometre. It cautions that average values should not be used to calculate an individual trip.

The comparison in one sentence
For each mode, calculate passenger emissions as the mode-specific emissions factor multiplied by that mode’s route distance, then divide vehicle emissions among the people carried. Add access and transfer legs when you are comparing door-to-door travel. Keep the geography, accounting boundary, factor vintage and occupancy assumptions consistent so that the numbers answer the same question.

1. Decide what you are comparing
Total emissions or emissions intensity?
Total trip emissions answer “How much greenhouse gas does this itinerary produce?” They depend on the complete route length and every leg. Emissions intensity answers “How carbon-intensive is this mode per passenger distance?” It is normally expressed in grams of CO2e per passenger-kilometre (g CO2e/pkm). A long train journey can therefore have a higher total than a short flight while still having a lower intensity.

Use passenger-kilometres for a fair comparison of transport efficiency, but use actual distances to estimate your own trip. Do not multiply one mode’s factor by another mode’s distance merely because the endpoints are the same.
One leg or door to door?
State whether the calculation covers only the main train, plane, bus or car leg, or the entire journey from origin to destination. A station taxi, airport rail link, rideshare, parking shuttle or personal car can materially change a short main leg. The UK Department for Transport’s journey-comparison methodology treats airport access as a separate contribution; follow the same logic for every access leg you include.
Who is travelling?
Record the number of travellers and whether they share a vehicle. A car’s fuel use is produced by the vehicle but allocated to its occupants in a per-person comparison. For a solo driver, the full vehicle result belongs to one person; with three passengers, divide it among four travellers. Bus, coach and aircraft factors may already embody an assumed load, so check the factor definition before applying another occupancy adjustment.

Numbers are not comparable if one includes fuel production and another counts only exhaust. Select a boundary before collecting factors and name it in the result.
| Boundary | What it includes | When to use it | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct or tank-to-wheel | Energy used by the vehicle during operation, such as fuel burned or electricity consumed at the vehicle. | Useful when you need a narrow operational figure and every mode is treated the same way. | It omits upstream fuel and electricity production, so electric and combustion modes are not fully comparable on a climate basis. |
| Well-to-wheel (WTW) | Well-to-tank energy supply plus tank-to-wheel vehicle use. | A practical common boundary for comparing passenger transport energy and greenhouse gases. | It normally excludes manufacturing of vehicles and construction and maintenance of infrastructure. |
| Full life cycle | Energy supply, operation, vehicle manufacture, infrastructure and disposal, where data are available. | Long-term fleet or policy analysis. | Comparable data are often unavailable across modes; mixing partial life-cycle studies creates false precision. |
The EEA’s EU-27 comparison used well-to-wheel figures and excluded vehicle and infrastructure life-cycle components because comparable information was lacking. If you use that context, do not present it as a full life-cycle result.
Keep greenhouse-gas units consistent
Use the same metric for every mode, such as CO2e, and state whether aviation non-CO2 effects are included. A direct-CO2-only result and a radiative-forcing-adjusted aviation result are different products; label them rather than placing them in one unqualified ranking.

3. Measure the route each mode actually travels
- Fix the endpoints. Write the origin and destination as addresses or named terminals, not just cities.
- List every leg. Separate the main mode from access, transfers and last-mile travel.
- Measure mode-specific distance. Use the rail route for a train, the scheduled flight distance for a plane, the road route for a bus and the driven road route for a car. Routes rarely have equal mileage.
- Record the distance unit. Convert all legs to kilometres before multiplying by a factor.
- Document the source and date. A route planner can change its result when a service, road or airport changes; retain the value used in your worksheet.
For air travel, use the distance convention required by your chosen factor. Some aviation factors are defined for flight distance and may use a distance uplift or a specific great-circle convention. Do not apply an uplift unless the factor documentation says it is required.

4. Select factors from one current, documented source
The UK’s current official reporting reference is the 2026 Government greenhouse gas conversion factors for company reporting, published by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero on 11 June 2026 and updated on 31 July 2026. Download the matching 2026 worksheets and methodology paper, then choose the precise service category for rail, road passenger transport and aviation. The release is intended for UK reporting; its geography and purpose should be stated when you publish a comparison.
The Department for Transport’s Journey emissions comparisons: methodology and guidance explains how to combine journey distances and factors, adjust car results for average occupancy, distinguish aircraft seating classes and split example journeys into components. Use its definitions when you need to understand whether a value is per vehicle-kilometre or per passenger-kilometre.
Never mix a rail factor from one year with a flight factor from another unless you explain why. Electricity generation, vehicle efficiency, fleet composition and occupancy change over time. Keep a factor register containing the source title, publication year, table or worksheet name, geography, unit, boundary and any load assumptions.
Vehicle-kilometre versus passenger-kilometre
A factor stated per vehicle-kilometre describes the whole vehicle. Multiply it by distance, then divide by the actual number of travellers. A factor already stated per passenger-kilometre describes one passenger and should not be divided again. Bus, coach, rail and aircraft tables often use passenger-based factors, while a private-car calculation commonly starts with vehicle emissions.
5. Handle occupancy and load correctly
Cars
Calculate the car’s vehicle emissions first, then allocate them across the people in the car. Show at least the actual occupancy for your trip. If you are comparing a policy-average scenario rather than a booked journey, use the occupancy assumption supplied with the factor and identify it as an average. A solo trip and a four-person shared ride have the same vehicle fuel use but different per-person results.

- [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
Buses and coaches
Check whether the published factor already assumes an average load, a specified number of seats or a particular vehicle class. A nearly empty coach and a full coach cannot have the same per-passenger result. If the source provides a load-factor range, calculate both ends instead of silently substituting your own occupancy.
Trains
Rail factors can reflect average passengers, train type, electrification and the electricity mix. Do not infer a diesel result from an electric-train factor or apply a national rail average to a service category with a different definition. If the worksheet distinguishes commuter, intercity or sleeper services, select the category that matches the trip.
Aircraft
Aircraft factors can include an assumed load factor and can vary by seating class. Economy, premium-economy, business and first-class passengers occupy different amounts of cabin space; use the class-specific factor where supplied. Do not divide a passenger factor by the number of people on the aircraft.

Aircraft emit carbon dioxide and other climate-active effects at altitude. Some calculators report direct aviation CO2 only; others apply a multiplier intended to represent non-CO2 radiative forcing. State which treatment you use and keep direct CO2 visible so readers can see what changed.
In its EU-27 analysis covering 2014–2018, the European Environment Agency applied a 1.7 global-warming-potential-weighted factor to direct aviation CO2 for non-CO2 radiative-forcing effects. That 1.7 value belongs to that study’s method and period; it is not a universal multiplier for every current flight calculator. If your selected 2026 factor already includes non-CO2 effects, do not multiply it again.
7. Calculate the result

For a factor expressed per vehicle-kilometre:
Passenger emissions = factor (g CO2e/vehicle-km) × route distance (km) ÷ travellers in the vehicle
For a door-to-door itinerary, calculate each leg separately and add the passenger results:
Total trip emissions = Σ emissions for every included leg
Convert grams to kilograms or tonnes only after adding the legs. Keep full precision in the worksheet and round the displayed answer at the end.
A transparent worked structure
Imagine a traveller comparing a train, a flight, a scheduled coach and a car between the same two addresses. The train and flight have access legs; the coach has a walk to its terminal; the car carries two people. Create one row for each leg, enter its distance and the factor’s unit, and calculate:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Train main leg: train factor × train kilometres.
- Train access legs: each access factor × its distance, then add them to the train main leg.
- Flight main leg: the aviation factor for the selected cabin and boundary × flight kilometres; apply a non-CO2 treatment only if the factor requires it.
- Flight access legs: airport transfers calculated with their own mode factors.
- Coach: coach passenger factor × coach kilometres, plus any access leg.
- Car: car vehicle factor × driven kilometres ÷ two occupants, plus any separate access or parking shuttle leg.
The output is four door-to-door totals and four intensity values. Because the example contains no invented factor values, replace each label with the corresponding cell from your chosen official worksheet.

8. Build a worksheet that exposes assumptions
| Column | Entry | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Option | Train, plane, bus/coach or car | Identifies the comparison row. |
| Leg | Main service, station access, airport transfer, parking shuttle | Prevents hidden door-to-door emissions. |
| Distance (km) | Measured route distance | Allows each mode to use its real route. |
| Factor value | Number from one dated source | Keeps the calculation reproducible. |
| Factor unit | g CO2e/pkm or g CO2e/vehicle-km | Determines whether occupancy division is required. |
| Boundary | Direct, WTW or life cycle | Stops unlike accounting systems being mixed. |
| Occupancy or load | Actual travellers or source assumption | Controls per-person allocation. |
| Aviation treatment | Direct CO2 only or non-CO2 included | Makes the flight result interpretable. |
| Result | Leg emissions and summed trip emissions | Shows both components and the final total. |
Add a notes column for rail electrification, vehicle type, seating class, unusual detours, cancellations or a factor’s stated limitations. A reader should be able to reproduce the result without guessing what a cell means.
9. Use average rankings only as a reasonableness check
The EEA’s EU-27 well-to-wheel analysis found rail among the lowest-emission motorised passenger modes, buses and coaches the most efficient road passenger mode, and cars and passenger flights among the least efficient per passenger-kilometre. Its figures aggregate many services and years; they are not substitutes for route-specific distances, occupancy and factors.
The same analysis reported a 12% improvement in aviation passenger-transport efficiency and a 13% improvement in rail efficiency from 2014 to 2018. It associated aviation’s change largely with more efficient aircraft, and rail’s change mainly with electrification and a lower-carbon electricity mix. Those are historical EU aggregates, not forecasts or guarantees for a particular operator or journey.
Use an average chart to spot an implausible spreadsheet result, not to claim that every train beats every plane. A long, indirect rail route, a lightly loaded coach, a shared car or a short flight with low access emissions can change the ordering.
10. Test uncertainty instead of reporting false precision
Three inputs usually dominate uncertainty: route distance, occupancy or load, and the factor itself. Run a sensitivity case for each material uncertainty.
- Occupancy case: calculate the car with one occupant and with the actual party size; for buses or aircraft, use the low and high load assumptions documented by the source.
- Electricity case: if rail factors vary by electricity mix, show the applicable regional factor and an alternative published mix only when both use the same boundary.
- Aviation case: present direct CO2 and the selected non-CO2-inclusive result as separate lines.
- Route case: compare the booked route with a reasonable alternative only when both are real options, and explain why their distances differ.
Report a range when the assumptions produce a range. Do not attach extra decimal places to a result whose occupancy or factor is only an average.
11. Mode-specific pitfalls and fixes
Train
- Pitfall: using a national rail average for a diesel branch, an electric intercity service or a metro without checking the category. Fix: choose the worksheet row that matches the service and note the traction and electricity assumptions.
- Pitfall: comparing rail kilometres with the flight’s straight-line distance. Fix: use the actual booked rail route and the aviation distance convention required by the aviation factor.
- Pitfall: omitting the trip to the station. Fix: add walking, bus, taxi or car access when your comparison is door to door.
Plane
- Pitfall: presenting a direct-CO2 number as the aircraft’s complete climate impact. Fix: label the boundary and show a separate non-CO2 treatment when appropriate.
- Pitfall: applying an economy factor to a premium cabin. Fix: select the seating-class factor supplied by the source.
- Pitfall: forgetting airport access and the extra distance to an out-of-town airport. Fix: calculate those legs independently.
Bus or coach
- Pitfall: treating every bus as the same vehicle. Fix: distinguish local bus, long-distance coach and any fuel or propulsion categories in the factor table.
- Pitfall: assuming a full load because the service has many seats. Fix: use the factor’s stated load or show a sensitivity range.
Car
- Pitfall: quoting vehicle emissions as though one person always travels. Fix: divide by the actual number of occupants for a per-person comparison.
- Pitfall: ignoring detours, traffic-related route choices or parking transfers. Fix: record the driven distance and include separate legs that fall inside your chosen boundary.
- Pitfall: mixing a fuel-use factor with an electricity factor without checking upstream treatment. Fix: use factors that share the same direct or WTW boundary.
12. Interpret the final table
Present, for each option, the main-mode distance, access distance, total distance, occupancy, factor source and boundary, followed by total kg CO2e per traveller and g CO2e per pkm. A concise decision statement should identify which option has the lowest result under the stated assumptions and how that conclusion changes under the sensitivity cases.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf two options overlap once uncertainty is shown, call them broadly comparable rather than forcing a precise winner. Explain whether the difference comes from route length, occupancy, electricity, seating class, access legs or aviation treatment. This is more informative than ranking modes by a single unqualified average.
13. A publication checklist
- Endpoints and trip date are defined.
- One-way or return travel is stated; return calculations include both directions.
- Main-mode and access-leg distances are listed.
- All factors come from a named source and compatible vintage.
- Units distinguish vehicle-kilometres from passenger-kilometres.
- Direct, WTW or life-cycle boundary is identified.
- Car occupancy and public-transport load assumptions are visible.
- Aircraft seating class and non-CO2 treatment are stated.
- Totals and per-pkm intensities are not conflated.
- Ranges or sensitivity notes cover material uncertainty.
- Rounding occurs only after the calculation.
14. Choosing the right comparison for a real decision
For a traveller deciding between booked itineraries, use door-to-door totals and the actual party size. For a policy or fleet comparison, use passenger-kilometre intensity with a clearly defined average load. For a corporate report, follow the current factor set and its reporting geography, retain the worksheet version and document every excluded life-cycle component. For public communication, show the assumptions prominently enough that readers do not mistake an average modal value for a promise about their own journey.
