How to Compare T-Shirt Fabric, Fit, and Print Quality Before Buying

The fastest way to judge a T-shirt is to verify its fiber percentages, treat GSM as only a weight clue, compare the garment’s actual measurements with a shirt that already fits, inspect seams and collar construction, and match the print method to the fabric and color. A shirt labeled “premium” can still have an unknown blend, poor sizing, weak seams, or a print that fails after washing. Use the checks below in that order, whether you are holding a shirt in a store or evaluating a product page.

Start with the information that can be verified

Before judging softness or appearance, collect the facts that should be stated clearly. A reliable listing or sewn-in label gives you enough information to compare one shirt with another without relying on adjectives.

Fiber percentages and origin

Look for the exact fiber composition, such as “100% cotton,” “60% cotton, 40% polyester,” or “95% cotton, 5% elastane.” In the United States, Federal Trade Commission rules generally require textile products to disclose fiber content, country of origin, and the identity of the responsible business. Cotton claims must be accurate. In the European Union, composition is listed in decreasing percentage order and is kept separate from care information.

Marketing phrases such as “premium cotton,” “luxury jersey,” or “high-quality blend” are not a substitute for percentages. Treat those phrases as incomplete until the actual composition is shown. If a seller will not identify the fibers, you cannot make a meaningful prediction about breathability, stretch, shrinkage, opacity, or print compatibility.

Manufacturer and product identity

A product page should identify the manufacturer or responsible business, the style name or number, available colors, and a measurement chart. This information helps you compare the same shirt later and makes a return or warranty request possible. A generic mock-up with no garment photos, measurements, or maker identification offers little evidence beyond the artwork.

Use GSM to compare fabric weight, not to declare a winner

GSM means grams per square metre. It describes how much fabric weighs over a standard area. A higher GSM generally means more material, which often improves opacity and gives the shirt more structure. A lower GSM usually feels lighter and may drape more easily in hot weather. Neither result is automatically better.

Useful reference points

For context, Gildan’s 2026 guide lists its 64000 Adult T-Shirt at 150 g/m². Next Level Apparel’s 2025 print guide lists a heavyweight cotton jersey at 230 grams. These are manufacturer figures for particular products, not universal standards or recommendations. Compare shirts intended for the same use: a lightweight summer tee should not be judged against a heavyweight streetwear shirt by the same comfort criteria.

Weight clue Common feel and behavior Questions still unanswered
Lower GSM Lighter on the body and often easier to drape; may be less opaque. Is the yarn strong? Will it shrink? Are seams stable? Will the print show through?
Mid-range GSM Often balances comfort, coverage, and everyday structure. How does this particular knit handle washing and stretching?
Higher GSM Usually denser, more structured, and less transparent; can feel warmer. Is it soft or coarse? Does the collar hold shape? Is the extra weight worth the climate and fit?

GSM does not tell you softness, yarn quality, seam construction, shrinkage, cut, or print durability. Two fabrics with the same GSM can feel very different because of yarn, finishing, knit structure, and treatment. No universal “ideal” GSM has been established; choose the weight that suits your climate, layering plans, and desired silhouette.

Check the fiber blend for the job you actually have

100% cotton

Cotton can feel breathable and familiar against the skin and is generally a strong match for direct-to-garment printing. It can also shrink, wrinkle, and hold moisture longer than many synthetic blends. “100% cotton” tells you the fiber percentage, not the grade of yarn, finishing quality, or fit accuracy.

Cotton-polyester blends

Polyester can add shape retention, faster drying, and resistance to some kinds of shrinkage. The trade-off may be a different hand feel, less absorbency, or printing constraints. A blend is not automatically inferior; it is a different set of compromises. Ask for the exact ratio because a 90/10 blend behaves differently from a 50/50 blend.

Elastane and other stretch fibers

A small percentage of elastane can improve recovery in fitted or performance-oriented shirts. Check whether the care label restricts heat, because high temperatures can damage stretch fibers. Do not infer stretch from the word “fitted”; verify it from the composition and garment measurements.

Compare measurements with a shirt that already fits

Letter sizes are not a measurement standard. One brand’s medium can be another brand’s small or large, and a “relaxed” cut can have a very different body and sleeve shape from a “slim” cut in the same nominal size.

Take a reference shirt

  1. Choose a T-shirt whose fit you already like and whose fabric has not stretched out.
  2. Lay it flat without pulling the fabric.
  3. Measure chest width across the garment just below the armpits, shoulder width from seam to seam, body length from the highest shoulder point to the hem, and sleeve length from shoulder seam to cuff.
  4. Record collar opening and note whether the hem is straight, curved, or split.
  5. Compare those numbers with the seller’s chart, using the same measurement definitions.

Read the cut description critically

“Classic,” “modern,” “slim,” “relaxed,” and “oversized” describe intent, not a guaranteed measurement. A modern cut may have a narrower chest but longer body; an oversized cut may broaden the shoulders while dropping the seam. Product photos can reveal shoulder placement and body proportions that a size chart does not. If measurements fall between sizes, decide whether you prefer a closer or looser fit and check the return policy before ordering.

Look for movement and balance

When trying a shirt on, raise your arms, sit, and reach forward. The shoulder seam should sit where the cut intends rather than halfway down the arm unless the style is deliberately dropped-shoulder. The chest should not pull across the print or buttons, and the hem should remain long enough for your normal posture. Excess fabric at the lower back, twisting side seams, or a collar that rides up signals a pattern or size problem rather than a GSM problem.

Inspect collar, seams, and finishing

Collar and neck opening

A collar should lie flat without rippling, twisting, or standing away from the neck. Ribbing that is stretched before the first wash may lose shape quickly. Check whether the neck opening matches the listing photos and whether a neck tape or binding keeps the seam comfortable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Side seams and hem

Lay the shirt flat and look for straight side seams. A tube-knit or poorly balanced garment can twist after washing, making the front and back appear to rotate. The hem should be even, securely stitched, and free of skipped stitches. A curved hem is not a defect when it is intentional and shown in the product description.

Stitching consistency

Inspect the inside and outside for even stitch length, secure starts and ends, and loose threads that could unravel. Small thread tails are easy to trim; open seams, puckering, or irregular tension are more serious. Reinforcement at shoulder joins and underarms is useful because those areas see repeated stress.

Match the decoration method to fabric and color

Print quality is a combination of process, ink, curing or bonding, artwork, and fabric. ASTM International practice D6321/D6321M-22 covers test methods and procedures used to evaluate important characteristics of machine-washable T-shirts, including shirts that are dyed, washed, printed, embroidered, or trimmed. A listing that names the process gives you a better starting point than one that simply says “printed.”

Direct-to-garment (DTG)

DTG places ink directly onto the garment and is especially suited to cotton. It can produce a soft hand feel and detailed, multicolor artwork. On a dark shirt, inspect the light underbase: an obvious rectangular pretreatment area around the design can indicate poor application. Colors should be even, fine details clean, and small text free of fuzzy edges. A soft print is not proof of durability; ask whether a sample was washed.

Screen printing

Screen printing pushes ink through a mesh screen onto the shirt. It is well suited to solid-color graphics and production runs, but the result depends on ink choice, blend content, pigment dyes, and curing temperature. Check that edges are sharp, coverage is even, and the ink is not tacky or excessively thick. A heavy layer can crack when the fabric bends, while under-cured ink may feel sticky and release color during washing.

Sublimation

Sublimation works well for polyester garments because the dye integrates into the fibers rather than forming a raised film. The design should look part of the fabric and remain smooth to the touch. It is generally a poor match for dark cotton: the process needs a suitable synthetic surface and is most predictable on white or light colors. Mimaki Europe describes polyester garments as a strong use case for sublimation.

DTF and heat-transfer films

Direct-to-film and other heat-transfer methods normally leave a surface film that you can feel. Inspect the perimeter for complete adhesion, especially at sharp corners and small lettering. Stretch the fabric gently; fine lines should not split and edges should not lift. A thick, rubbery hand is not automatically a failure, but it may be uncomfortable on a large chest graphic and can trap heat.

Fabric and color exceptions

Decoration settings change with fabric and color. Gildan’s 2026 guidance records exceptions by fabric and color and notes that sublimation performs best on 100% polyester, preferably white or light shades. It also warns that “the amount of pre-treat used on fabric blends might differ to the amount used on 100% cotton.” That difference can affect color density, hand feel, and wash behavior, so do not assume that a process proven on cotton will look identical on a blend.

Method Best-supported situation What to inspect before buying
DTG Cotton garments and detailed artwork. Even color, fine detail, and no visible pretreatment rectangle on dark shirts.
Screen printing Solid graphics and volume production. Sharp edges, even coverage, non-tacky ink, and evidence of proper curing.
Sublimation Polyester, especially white or light garments. Integrated appearance and smooth surface; avoid assuming it suits dark cotton.
DTF/heat transfer Graphics applied as a bonded film. Fully adhered edges, no lifting, and lines that survive gentle stretch.

Use the care label and wash evidence as durability clues

Care instructions are not decoration. FTC rules require a seller or manufacturer to have a reasonable basis for care information, including reliable evidence or testing, before sale. A useful label specifies wash temperature, drying method, ironing restrictions, bleaching guidance, and warnings. “Easy care” alone tells you very little.

Questions to ask about a printed shirt

  • Was a production sample washed, rather than only a blank garment?
  • How many washes were performed, and under what temperature and drying conditions?
  • Are post-wash photos available in normal light?
  • Does the recommended care change for a blend, dark color, or transfer film?

No universal print-wash lifespan has been established for every method and fabric combination. A heavy shirt can still lose a print if the ink or transfer was poorly applied. Follow the label, wash inside out when advised, use the stated temperature, and avoid high heat when the instructions prohibit it.

A practical buying workflow

  1. Save the listing details. Record fiber percentages, GSM if provided, manufacturer or style number, color, size chart, decoration method, care instructions, price, and return terms.
  2. Reject missing fundamentals. If composition, measurements, or responsible business information is absent, treat the shirt as high uncertainty rather than filling the gaps with marketing language.
  3. Compare weight within a use case. Put the stated GSM beside shirts meant for the same climate and silhouette. Do not rank a 150 g/m² summer tee against a 230-gram heavyweight jersey as though one must be universally superior.
  4. Match measurements. Compare chest, shoulder, length, sleeve, collar, and hem shape with your reference shirt.
  5. Evaluate construction. Inspect collar lay, side-seam alignment, hem stitching, and stress points in photographs or in person.
  6. Check print compatibility. Confirm that the method suits the fiber and color, then inspect edges, coverage, film adhesion, and hand feel.
  7. Read care and wash evidence. Prefer a specific label and credible post-wash information over broad durability claims.
  8. Confirm the exit plan. Check return deadlines, condition requirements, and whether a customized or washed shirt can be returned.

Use this comparison table before you buy

Criterion Record for each shirt Why it matters
Fiber composition Exact percentages and order shown on label or page. Predicts feel, stretch, shrinkage tendencies, and print compatibility more reliably than “premium.”
Fabric weight GSM or grams per square metre, with the source and product style. Helps compare opacity, structure, and drape, but does not establish softness or longevity.
Actual measurements Chest, shoulder, body length, sleeve, collar, and hem shape. Size labels vary; measurements predict fit.
Construction Collar, seam alignment, stitch consistency, reinforcement, and hem finish. Reveals whether the garment is likely to hold its shape and withstand stress.
Decoration DTG, screen print, sublimation, DTF, or another named process. Lets you judge compatibility with fiber and color and anticipate hand feel.
Print evidence Edge sharpness, coverage, adhesion, stretch behavior, and post-wash photos. Separates a plausible process claim from evidence of execution.
Care label Temperature, drying, ironing, bleaching, and warnings. Specific instructions are a practical signal that care requirements were considered.
Price and returns Current price, return window, exclusions, and shipping terms. A low price is less attractive if sizing uncertainty or customization removes your return option.
Manufacturer identification Responsible business, style number, and country of origin. Makes the product traceable and easier to replace or report.

Common trade-offs and the right choice for each use

Hot-weather everyday wear

Prioritize a lighter fabric, breathable fiber, comfortable drape, and a color that is not overly transparent. Confirm that the lighter weight does not make the print show through or cling uncomfortably. A blend may dry faster, while cotton may feel more absorbent; neither choice eliminates the need to check fit and care.

Layering under jackets or overshirts

Look for a smooth collar, moderate body length, and sleeves that do not bunch under the outer layer. Excessive GSM can add bulk, while an extremely light shirt may twist or lose opacity. Measure the shirt you already layer successfully rather than choosing by the size letter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Large graphic or artwork with fine detail

Prioritize a named process, clean edges, and a fabric compatible with that process. DTG can suit detailed cotton artwork; screen printing can suit solid graphics when ink and curing are controlled. For a transfer film, inspect adhesion and stretch behavior around small lettering.

Workwear or frequent washing

Choose construction and care evidence over headline GSM. Reinforced stress points, a stable collar, specific wash instructions, and a sample that has been washed provide more useful evidence than “heavyweight” alone.

Red flags and what to do about them

  • Only “premium” or “luxury” is listed: Ask for exact fiber percentages and the country of origin; otherwise compare it as an unidentified garment.
  • GSM is advertised without measurements: Request the chart. Weight cannot correct an inaccurate or unsuitable cut.
  • Photos show only a flat mock-up: Ask for a photo of the actual collar, side seam, hem, and print surface.
  • The print process is not named: Ask whether it is DTG, screen print, sublimation, DTF, or another method and which fabrics and colors were tested.
  • Edges look fuzzy or a film is lifting: Do not assume washing will fix it; request a replacement or use the return process before laundering.
  • Care language is vague: Treat durability claims cautiously and follow only instructions that are actually stated.
  • Blend and color are omitted from print guidance: Ask whether pretreatment, curing, or transfer settings change for that exact garment.

Bottom line: rank evidence, not adjectives

A good T-shirt is the one whose measurable details fit your use: exact fiber content, suitable weight, accurate dimensions, sound construction, a decoration method compatible with the fabric and color, and care instructions supported by credible evidence. GSM helps you compare material weight, but it cannot replace a measurement chart or a print inspection. “100% cotton” can be a sensible choice for feel and DTG compatibility, yet it does not guarantee a better shirt. Before paying, make the seller show the composition, measurements, process, and care facts that let you judge the garment rather than the marketing.
