Add taxes and one-time charges, and compare service costs over the same period as the credits. Keep the phone-only total separate from the combined phone-and-service total: a low advertised device payment is not the whole cost.
Use the same phone, offer terms, and time period
Compare the same iPhone model and storage capacity in each option. T-Mobile’s offer terms accessed October 4, 2026, list example full balances of $1,199.99 for an iPhone 18 Pro 256GB and $1,299.99 for an iPhone 18 Pro Max 256GB. These are examples in current promotion terms, not universal prices or personalized quotes. Check the exact checkout price for the phone you want on T-Mobile’s current offers page.

The same page listed iPhone promotions with credits of up to $1,000 and terms as long as 36 monthly credits when checked October 4, 2026. Specific offers can have different maximums and requirements; “up to” is not a typical saving or a promise that your trade-in earns the maximum. Some offers accept any-condition trade-ins, while others require a qualifying model or condition.
Match the comparison period to the credit schedule. A 24-month cost and a 36-month credit stream are not directly comparable unless you state what happens after month 24.

- When you receive the phone, insert a SIM card from a compatible carrier. Then, turn it on, connect to Wi-Fi, and follow the on screen prompts to activate service.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charger and charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Calculate the phone cost and the overall cost separately
For a chosen comparison period, use this formula:
Device-and-service total = upfront device payment + device taxes + connection or activation charges + device payments − immediate trade-in value − bill credits actually received + service charges and plan-price difference + applicable service taxes and fees.
Track two figures:
- Device-only net cost: device payments and upfront device charges, minus the trade-in value applied to the purchase and bill credits actually received.
- Phone-and-service total: device-only net cost plus service charges, applicable fees and taxes, and any additional plan cost incurred to qualify.
If you would have paid for the same service plan anyway, show that service cost separately rather than treating all of it as a new phone expense. If the deal requires a more expensive plan, include the added cost over the credit period. T-Mobile’s plan comparison and disclosures can help identify plan prices and terms; charges, surcharges, and taxes may vary by plan and location.

Separate trade-in value from promotional credits
A trade-in estimate is not necessarily the final accepted value, and neither figure is automatically the same as the promotion’s recurring bill credits. T-Mobile’s Trade-In Program Terms say the offer price and/or promotional offer follows the customer’s answers to eligibility questions. T-Mobile may inspect the device and revalue it if the actual model or condition differs from those answers.

- For an in-store transaction, the accepted trade-in offer price may be applied to the new device or accessories; any remainder is applied as a T-Mobile account bill credit.
- For a mail-in trade-in, the phone must arrive by the relevant expiration date and pass validation. The terms say a bill credit is issued within three bill cycles.
Record the phone model and condition, the accepted value, how it will be applied, and any separate promotional credit. Keep the trade-in confirmation and, for a mailed phone, proof of shipment or receipt. Do not assume a device qualifies just because a different offer accepts phones in any condition; the terms of the specific offer control.

Check what earns the bill credits—and when they arrive
T-Mobile requires EIP financing for promotional pricing. Its promotion FAQ explains: “For this promotion, we give you a monthly bill credit to offset all, or a portion, of that monthly payment for the length of the EIP Agreement.” In other words, the full monthly Equipment Installment Plan (EIP) payment appears on the bill, with a recurring promotional credit offsetting some or all of it during the offer period.
Before counting a promotion’s maximum, check that you meet its specific requirements. Depending on the offer, these may include a qualifying plan, financing approval, a particular trade-in model and condition, a new line or port-in, and keeping the account and eligible line in good standing. The offers page warns that credits may take two billing cycles to appear, so do not mistake a delayed first credit for an immediate reduction in the device’s financed balance.

Include upfront charges
T-Mobile says device taxes are due on the pre-credit device price. Current promotion terms may also require a $35 device connection charge. Include both where they apply instead of subtracting promotional credits from them. Verify the amounts shown for your order and location, since taxes and service fees can differ.

Account for early payoff, cancellation, and plan changes
Do not count future credits as guaranteed if you may leave before the credit term ends. T-Mobile’s FAQ says customers enrolled from July 1, 2024 onward who pay off an EIP early forfeit the remaining recurring device credits. The current offers page also says a line generally must remain active and in good standing to receive credits; canceling the entire account before all credits arrive may stop them and make the remaining finance-agreement balance due. Some individual offers say to contact T-Mobile before canceling to learn whether remaining credits can continue, so follow the terms for the offer you actually have.

For a realistic comparison, use the number of months you expect to keep the line and remain eligible, not just the advertised credit term. If you plan to pay off early, cancel, or change plans, check the exact offer terms and ask T-Mobile how the change affects credits before acting.
Build a comparison you can verify
- Write down the exact phone: model, storage, and full pre-credit price for each option.
- Record the trade-in: device model and condition, accepted offer price, application method, and the specific promotion’s trade-in requirements.
- List eligibility terms: required plan, new-line or port-in condition, financing, account standing, and any other stated qualification.
- Map payments and credits: upfront device payment, monthly EIP payment, credit amount and term, and when credits are expected to start.
- Add costs outside the advertised device payment: pre-credit device taxes, connection or activation charges, service charges, surcharges, and applicable taxes.
- Compare plans over the same period: show the required plan’s total cost and the incremental cost over the plan you would otherwise choose.
- State the exit assumption: say whether your total assumes you keep the line and account eligible through the final credit.
Public offer terms cannot establish one personal total without your exact phone and storage, plan, line requirements, trade-in device and condition, purchase channel, eligibility, and expected time on the plan. Use the offer displayed for your account and checkout rather than treating a headline maximum as your quote.
