T-Mobile’s advertised credit is conditional; an iPhone bought outright from Apple or with Apple Card Monthly Installments is unlocked, while one financed through T-Mobile’s Equipment Installment Plan is locked to T-Mobile until paid in full.
Compare the full cost over the time you expect to keep the plan
Start with a consistent comparison period, such as the number of months you expect to remain with T-Mobile. Include service costs as well as the phone: a device promotion can be outweighed by a more expensive plan required to qualify.

Use your actual plan costs and trade-in eligibility rather than comparing T-Mobile’s headline maximum with Apple’s estimate. T-Mobile’s offers may depend on a particular plan, trade-in model and condition, a new line or port-in, credit approval, and other terms. Check the specific offer at checkout: T-Mobile’s current offer listings can change and may show multiple promotions.

What a T-Mobile iPhone credit does—and does not—mean
T-Mobile’s offer listings checked in 2026 included a trade-in promotion of up to $1,200 in promotional credit on Experience Beyond, with eligibility and offer terms applying. That is a maximum, not a guaranteed discount or an estimate of typical savings. The same listings describe offers with up to 36 monthly bill credits; the amount and qualification rules depend on the individual promotion.

Credits are commonly applied over time rather than deducted as an immediate discount. In offers carrying the warning, T-Mobile states: “Bill credits end if you pay off device early.” Its offer terms also warn that credits can stop if you cancel the account before they are complete; depending on the offer, the remaining device financing balance may become due. Read the terms for the exact promotion before relying on the advertised total.
Include the cost of any required plan change
Find the plan you would keep if you bought the unlocked phone, then compare it with the plan required by the T-Mobile promotion. If qualifying requires moving to a more expensive plan, add that price difference for every month in your comparison period. This is often the most important adjustment to a headline device credit.

Also check whether the offer requires opening a new line or porting a number, and whether your trade-in qualifies based on its model and condition. An offer’s listed maximum does not establish what your particular device or account will receive.
Understand the lock and financing differences
Buying unlocked from Apple
Apple says an iPhone paid for in full or purchased with Apple Card Monthly Installments is unlocked. Apple describes ACMI as 0% APR, subject to credit approval and credit limit; it is not universally available financing. Apple’s checkout requires selecting a supported carrier for an iPhone purchase. Unlocked status offers carrier-use flexibility, but it does not remove installment payments or other applicable terms.

Financing through T-Mobile
Apple says an iPhone financed through T-Mobile Equipment Installment Plan is locked to T-Mobile until it is paid in full. T-Mobile’s unlock policy, checked in 2026, says a financed or leased device must be paid in full and active on its network for at least 40 days on the requesting line to qualify under the stated criteria. Review the policy and your account’s status before assuming you can move the phone to another carrier.

- T-Mobile may cost less overall if your existing plan qualifies, your trade-in meets the promotion’s requirements, and you expect to remain for the full credit period. Calculate using credits you can actually receive and the service costs you would actually pay.
- Apple’s unlocked route may suit you better if carrier flexibility matters, you might switch before credits finish, or you would have to pay more for service to qualify for the T-Mobile offer.
These are decision conditions, not a tested price result. The official materials cited here do not publish an independent estimate of average customer savings between the two routes, so the answer depends on your exact offer, trade-in and plan.
