How to Compare Streaming Services for Legal Dramas and Original Movies

Start with the legal dramas and original movies you actually want to watch, then compare where each is available in your country and whether access is included, ad-supported, rented, or purchased. There is no reliable global winner: catalogs, rights, plans, and prices vary by market and change over time.

Compare titles, not service reputations

A large catalog or a service’s reputation for originals does not tell you whether it has the films and series you care about. Make a shortlist of must-watch titles—ideally a few legal dramas and original movies—and check every service against the same list.

For each title, note whether it is available in your country and the exact way you can watch it. A title appearing in a service’s search results does not necessarily mean it is included with a subscription.

Separate the ways to watch

JustWatch describes its guide as covering legal offers on multiple platforms, including subscriptions, free streaming, ad-supported streaming, rentals, and purchases. Its support page says: “We only show 100% legal offers on many different platforms for paid subscriptions, free streaming, streaming with ads, for rental, and for purchase.” JustWatch’s U.S. guide can help you find offers, but confirm the offer with the service before paying.

Access type What to check
Subscription-included Confirm the title is included in the specific plan you would buy, rather than merely listed by the service.
Free or ad-supported Check whether access is free, whether ads are shown, and whether the offer is available in your country.
Digital rental Record the rental price and any time limit or viewing conditions shown by the seller.
Digital purchase Record the purchase price and check the seller’s terms for accessing the title.

JustWatch’s filters distinguish subscription offers from buy-or-rent options. Use them to avoid treating a rental or purchase as part of a subscription’s catalog. A one-off payment may be preferable to starting another recurring plan for a single title.

Compare the real cost for your shortlist

First establish which of your chosen titles each service actually includes. Then compare the cost of the plan you would need, plus any add-ons and rental or purchase charges for titles not included. Estimate the total over the period you expect to watch; a lower advertised starting price is not necessarily the lower-cost choice if it leaves more of your shortlist outside the subscription.

Hulu’s U.S. legal-drama collection lists Reasonable Doubt, Law & Order, Damages, Boston Legal, and For the People. When reviewed in 2026, that page showed plans starting at $12.49 per month. Its separate U.S. legal-movie collection lists films including Brian Banks and Indictment: The McMartin Trial; when reviewed in 2026, that page showed plans starting at $11.99 per month. These are collection-page snapshots, not a dependable comparison of plan tiers. Confirm the current price and the plan that includes each title on Hulu’s own pages: legal dramas and legal movies.

Those examples are U.S.-specific and do not establish a best service or guarantee that a listed title remains available. JustWatch’s guide is also explicitly U.S.-specific; choose the correct country rather than assuming its results apply elsewhere.

Check country and catalog details before subscribing

Streaming rights are title- and country-specific. Set the guide to your country, look up each title individually, and open the provider’s own title or plan page to verify the offer. Recheck shortly before subscribing: catalogs and prices can change, and a title may no longer be included by the time you are ready to watch.

  1. Write down the legal dramas and original movies you most want to watch, or choose the same sample titles for every service.
  2. Set a legal-availability guide such as JustWatch to your country.
  3. Search each title and record the provider and access type: subscription, free or ad-supported stream, rental, or purchase. Use the subscription filter when assessing a plan and the buy/rent filter to find alternatives.
  4. Verify the title and current plan price on the provider’s own pages.
  5. Compare total costs over your expected viewing period, including any add-ons and one-off payments.

Account for household needs and what “original” means

Beyond title coverage and cost, check practical terms that affect your household: ads, simultaneous streams, downloads, video quality, accessibility, and cancellation terms. These details can differ by plan and can change, so verify them directly with each provider before choosing.

Also distinguish service originals from licensed titles if original films are a priority. A genre collection can show examples of what a provider offers, but it does not establish a complete, current audit of which titles are originals across competing services. Check the individual title and provider information rather than inferring originality from a category page.

Choose the service that fits your actual viewing

For a fair comparison, use one country, one shortlist, and the specific access type and price available for each title. Prefer the service that covers the titles you value at a total cost and under terms that suit your household—not the one with the broadest-sounding genre label or the lowest starting price. If no single subscription covers enough of your list, compare a subscription plus a few rentals or purchases against paying for multiple subscriptions.
