Starlink’s position is less definitive for a household buyer. A Press Information Bureau release reporting a written Rajya Sabha reply, posted 29 January 2026, says the Department of Telecommunications issued Starlink Satellite Communications Private Limited a Unified License with GMPCS authorization. That is a regulatory milestone. It does not establish a consumer launch date, a monthly India price, a hardware price, taxes, installation terms, data policy, or orderability at your home.

Jio Platforms announced on 12 March 2025 that it had agreed with SpaceX to offer Starlink services and equipment through Jio retail outlets and online storefronts, with installation and activation support. The announcement was explicitly conditional on SpaceX receiving its own authorizations. The later government authorization does not, by itself, prove that this retail arrangement is active for your address. Treat it as an announced arrangement until an official order flow confirms otherwise.

Use Jio’s availability process for your city and exact address before choosing a tier. A plan shown on a regional page can still be unavailable in a particular building, lane, or apartment complex. The same page says installation and activation take approximately two hours from the engineer’s visit after documents are verified. That is an estimate for the on-site process, not a promise that an engineer will arrive within two hours of placing an order. Calculate first-year cost without hiding deposits

Use two separate totals:

1. Recurring service cost: 12 monthly plan charges plus GST applicable to the plan and any taxable components.
2. Upfront cash: recurring service cost plus non-refundable setup fees and refundable deposits. Show the deposits separately so a reader can see the amount temporarily tied up.

Because the regional page supplies prices before GST but does not provide a single tax-inclusive annual figure, the calculations below show the pre-GST base. Add the GST shown in your current order summary.

What the 2025 Jio announcement means

In its 12 March 2025 release, Jio Platforms said the proposed arrangement would make Starlink services and equipment available through Jio retail outlets and online storefronts, with installation and activation support. Jio Group CEO Mathew Oommen said, “Ensuring that every Indian, no matter where they live, has access to affordable and high-speed broadband remains Jio’s top priority.” SpaceX President and Chief Operating Officer Gwynne Shotwell said, “We are looking forward to working with Jio and receiving authorization from the Government of India to provide more people, organizations and businesses with access to Starlink’s high-speed internet services.” Those statements describe the announcement and its authorization condition at that time; they do not prove that a Starlink kit can be ordered through Jio today.

Historical warning, correctly dated

On 26 November 2021, the Department of Telecommunications said Starlink was not licensed at that time to offer satellite internet in India, told the company to stop bookings, and advised the public not to subscribe to services advertised then. That statement is historical. The 2026 PIB report describes a later authorization, so the 2021 warning should not be presented as the current licensing position.

Compare speeds without creating a false head-to-head

Jio’s regional prepaid page gives numerical download and upload figures because it describes those tiers as symmetric. The material reviewed does not provide an India-specific Starlink speed figure. Consequently, a table claiming that one service is faster than the other would be speculative.

When Starlink supplies an address-specific offer, record every speed field separately:

• Advertised download speed and whether it is a range or a single figure.
• Advertised upload speed.
• Any latency or performance qualification.
• Data allowance, traffic-management, or fair-use language.
