1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe best soybean bid is the one that leaves you with the highest net return for the same delivery window, quality and contract terms—not necessarily the quote with the highest cash price or strongest basis. Compare each offer by separating its futures component from its local basis, matching the correct futures month, and subtracting your actual hauling, storage, handling and quality costs.
Start with the three numbers in every soybean quote
A soybean cash bid is the price a buyer offers for grain delivered under stated conditions. That price can be analyzed as two components: the futures price and the basis.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Basis = local cash bid − relevant soybean futures price. USDA Agricultural Marketing Service (USDA-AMS) documents the calculation as the difference between its Bid field and Futures Price field. For soybeans, the futures reference is the Chicago Board of Trade market within CME Group.

|---|---|---|
| Cash bid | The buyer’s quoted price for your soybeans under a specified delivery arrangement. | This is the gross price before your farm-specific delivery and quality costs. |
| Futures price | The price of the referenced soybean futures contract month. | It is the benchmark portion of the quote and can change independently of local conditions. |
| Basis | Cash bid minus the matching futures price. | It isolates the local differential created by supply, demand, freight, storage and handling conditions. |
| Net cash price | Cash bid after hauling, storage, drying, handling, discounts and other applicable costs. | This is the figure that should drive a sale decision. |
A negative basis does not automatically make an offer poor, and a positive basis does not automatically make it best. The futures market level, delivery month and your costs must all be equivalent before bids can be judged fairly.

Build an apples-to-apples bid sheet
Before calculating anything, record the details that define what each quote actually buys. Use one row per buyer and delivery period.
- Buyer and physical location, including whether the quote is at the farm, an origin elevator or a destination facility.
- Date and time the quote was observed.
- Delivery date or delivery window, such as harvest, a named month or a 30-day arrival period.
- Soybean commodity and contract type: current cash, forward contract, delayed pricing, basis contract or another arrangement.
- Futures contract month named by the buyer, if one is stated.
- Quantity accepted and any minimum or maximum load requirement.
- Grade, moisture, damage, test weight, foreign material and other quality specifications.
- Premiums, discounts, shrink, drying charges, grading fees, check-off deductions or other stated adjustments.
- Who pays freight and where title or risk transfers.
- Storage, handling, elevation, interest or service charges and when each charge begins.
Two prices that look different may be economically identical after freight. Conversely, two quotes at the same elevator may have different net values if one has a narrower delivery window, stricter quality limits or an earlier pricing deadline.
Identify the bid format before comparing it
USDA-AMS distinguishes origin elevator bids from destination or 30-day-to-arrive bids. An origin bid generally refers to grain delivered to the local elevator, while a destination bid may include a different transportation arrangement and arrival obligation. Do not place those quotes in the same ranking until you have converted them to the same delivery point and responsibility for freight.
Also separate a live cash bid from a forward-delivery bid. A forward bid may lock a price for a later month, while a nearby cash bid may require delivery immediately. The dates, futures month and carrying costs are different even if the displayed cents-per-bushel number is similar.
Match the cash delivery window to the right futures month
The futures month is the most common source of a misleading basis calculation. USDA-AMS describes the closest contract month as the basis reference, and Iowa State Extension describes using the nearest-to-maturity futures contract. In practice, match the buyer’s delivery window to the futures contract that represents that period, not simply the contract month that is easiest to find on a screen.
- Write down the buyer’s delivery period exactly as quoted.
- Ask which soybean futures contract month the buyer used. If the quote does not state it, request clarification.
- Use a futures price from the same observation time, or as close as the available quotation allows.
- Calculate basis with that month only.
- If you compare another buyer using a different delivery month, keep the calculations separate until you account for the futures spread and carrying costs.
For example, a November harvest bid should not be compared with a January bid by subtracting both from the January futures price. The apparent basis difference would include the November-to-January futures spread rather than only the local elevator differential.
Calculate basis and net value step by step
1. Capture the matching futures quote
Suppose a buyer quotes a cash price of $10.70 per bushel for November delivery and identifies the November soybean futures contract at $11.00. The illustrative basis is:
$10.70 cash − $11.00 November futures = −$0.30 basis.
This is an example for explaining the method, not a current market quotation.

2. Calculate each offer independently
Do not calculate one regional basis and apply it to every elevator. A buyer’s location, delivery terms and timing determine its own basis. If a second buyer quotes $10.85 against the same $11.00 November futures contract, its basis is −$0.15. The second buyer has the stronger basis, but that does not yet prove it is the better sale.
3. Convert to a common net price
Subtract costs that differ among offers. Include freight from your farm, commercial storage, on-farm storage carrying cost, drying, handling, quality discounts and any contract-specific fees. Add premiums only when you are confident your grain meets the stated specification.
| Illustrative November offer | Buyer A | Buyer B |
|---|---|---|
| Quoted cash bid | $10.70/bu | $10.85/bu |
| Referenced November futures | $11.00/bu | $11.00/bu |
| Calculated basis | −$0.30/bu | −$0.15/bu |
| Hauling and other delivery costs | $0.08/bu | $0.24/bu |
| Illustrative net before unrelated farm costs | $10.62/bu | $10.61/bu |
In this example, Buyer B offers the stronger basis and higher gross cash price, yet Buyer A leaves one cent more after the stated delivery costs. The result changes if freight, timing or quality assumptions change.
4. Keep deductions tied to the correct load
A quoted bid may assume a particular moisture or grade. If your soybeans fall outside that specification, apply the buyer’s actual discount schedule rather than an assumed average. If a buyer has not stated a charge, mark it as unknown and ask before signing. Do not treat an unstated cost as zero.
Use futures spreads, storage and interest correctly
A later delivery month often has a different futures price from the nearby month. That spread can reflect the market’s compensation for storage and interest, but it is not a guaranteed payment for every bushel you store. Compare the added futures value with your complete carrying cost.
- Commercial storage rent and warehouse or elevator charges.
- On-farm storage operating cost, monitoring and shrink risk.
- Interest on the grain’s value or on borrowed operating capital.
- Insurance, quality deterioration and the possibility of additional drying or handling.
- Extra transportation or a second handling event when grain moves later.
- The opportunity cost of keeping bins occupied for a later crop.
For a stored-sale comparison, calculate the expected later net price and subtract all costs incurred between harvest and the later delivery date. A stronger later basis can help, but a basis change alone does not compensate for an unfavorable futures spread or high carrying cost.

Check whether the basis is historically strong or weak
Current basis has meaning only in context. Compare it with observations for the same location or reporting district and a similar point in the marketing year. A harvest-week basis should be compared with prior harvest-week observations, not with a midsummer average.
Iowa State Extension’s July soybean-basis resource reports regional and historical observations for Iowa and selected nearby markets. Its analysis compares cash prices and futures on a specified weekday, uses the closest delivery-month contract, and presents average, maximum and minimum basis across recent marketing years. Some quotations span several cents, so the tables use a midpoint. That midpoint is a regional reference, not the exact bid available to your farm.
Historical ranges help answer, "Is this basis unusually weak for this place and season?" They cannot answer, "Will basis improve next month?" Weather, processor demand, export movement, local stocks, freight availability and competing bids can change the outcome.

Understand what moves soybean basis
USDA-AMS identifies local and global supply and demand, local supplies, storage availability and transportation availability as major influences on basis.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Harvest supply
When many growers deliver at harvest, elevators may receive more soybeans than they can immediately store, process or ship. The increased local supply can push cash prices lower relative to futures, producing a weaker basis. This is a tendency, not a rule: a nearby processor or exporter with urgent demand may bid aggressively even during harvest.
Immediate demand
A crush plant, exporter or feed user needing beans now may raise its cash bid relative to futures. That can strengthen basis at one location while a nearby elevator with full bins posts a weaker basis.
Storage capacity
Limited space can pressure bids for immediate delivery. Available capacity can support bids or make later delivery more practical. Ask whether the quoted price depends on delivery before a facility reaches a capacity limit.
Transportation
Rail, truck and barge availability affects the cost of moving grain. During periods of heavy movement, freight demand can rise at the same time that harvest deliveries increase. A distant bid with a strong posted basis may still produce a lower net return after trucking.

USDA-AMS Grain Basis dataset
The USDA-AMS Grain Basis dataset includes soybean bid, futures price, nearby futures month, basis, market type and location fields. The page consulted for this guide reported weekly publishing and temporal coverage from 2007 to the present; its displayed last-update date was July 23, 2026. Use the location and market-type fields to avoid comparing unlike quotes.
A weekly dataset is useful for context but may not show the buyer’s live price when the market is moving. Treat the timestamp and publication schedule as part of the data, not as a guarantee of execution.
USDA-AMS State Grain Reports
USDA-AMS maintains a directory of state grain reports with a mix of daily and weekly products. Select the state and market report that covers your delivery area, then read its metadata for collection frequency, market type and delivery terms.
Report-specific metadata
The North Carolina Cash Grain Bids report, for example, describes daily price collection and says reporters periodically verify information and are recertified every two years. Those details belong to that report page; do not assume every state report uses the same schedule or verification process.

Decide which bid fits your sale
Use a decision sequence rather than ranking basis in isolation.
- Confirm execution. Verify that the buyer is accepting your quantity and grade for the stated window.
- Normalize delivery. Convert each offer to the same destination and account for who pays freight.
- Match futures months. Recalculate basis only with the contract month tied to each delivery period.
- Calculate net cash. Apply known hauling, storage, handling, drying, discounts and premiums.
- Check timing. Compare the cash needed now with the cost and risk of holding grain for a later bid.
- Use history as context. Compare with the same location and season, while recognizing that history does not forecast a guaranteed move.
- Read the contract. Confirm pricing deadline, delivery appointment, cancellation terms, payment timing and who bears quality or transportation risk.
If two offers have nearly identical net value, choose based on operational reliability, available receiving hours, payment terms, distance and your tolerance for price or storage risk. Those factors are part of the sale even when they do not appear in the headline bid.
Common comparison mistakes and how to fix them
Choosing the highest cash number
Problem: The highest gross bid may require a long haul, a narrow delivery window or expensive quality adjustments.
Fix: Calculate net value at your farm’s actual freight and handling cost.
Choosing the strongest basis automatically
Problem: Basis ignores differences in futures month, futures price, delivery cost and carrying cost.
Fix: Compare both the flat cash bid and the net price, then use basis to understand the local component.
Using the wrong futures month
Problem: Subtracting a November cash bid from January futures embeds the November-to-January spread in the basis.
Fix: Ask the buyer for the referenced contract month and use a matching quotation.

Fix: Put both offers on the same delivered basis before ranking them.
Treating a regional average as a firm offer
Problem: Public reports may show a range or midpoint and may be updated daily or weekly.
Fix: Call the buyer for a live, written bid and record the time it expires.
Ignoring quality and quantity
Problem: A bid for a full truckload of specification-grade soybeans may not apply to a smaller load or grain with different moisture or damage.
Fix: Confirm the exact grade schedule, load size and deductions for your grain.
Assuming history predicts the next move
Problem: A basis near its historical minimum can remain weak or weaken further when local storage or freight conditions change.
Fix: Use historical averages and ranges to frame risk, not to promise a future price.

Final checks before committing grain
- Ask the buyer to state the futures month and whether the basis is fixed or subject to change.
- Confirm whether the price is for immediate delivery, forward delivery or arrival during a stated period.
- Obtain the buyer’s quality discount and premium schedule.
- Verify receiving hours, appointment requirements and maximum daily volume.
- Calculate freight using your actual route, truck rate and expected wait time.
- Include storage and interest through the planned delivery date.
- Check payment timing and any title-transfer or cancellation provisions.
- Save the written confirmation with your worksheet.
Public USDA-AMS and university extension data can show how a bid compares with broader market conditions, but neither can determine the best sale for an individual farm. That answer depends on your location, delivery timing, grain quality and quantity, transportation and storage costs, and the buyer’s enforceable terms.
