Compare a Solana token with early-stage crypto assets on other networks using the same questions: what rights does it give holders, what has the project delivered, who controls supply and token permissions, what security evidence exists, and how realistic is an exit? Solana’s network does not validate a token: its own guidance says that creating a token does not give it value, which instead depends on utility, adoption and market dynamics. Read the token’s evidence, not the chain label, ticker or promotional claims.
Compare evidence, not blockchains
Use one framework for every candidate, whether it is issued on Solana or another network. The chain may change how a token works technically, but it does not by itself establish the quality of the project, the enforceability of holder rights, the safety of the code or the ability to sell.

For each asset, record what you can verify, the source, and the date checked. Separate project statements from independent evidence and from your own assumptions. If an important fact—such as a token unlock schedule or the identity of an administrator—is not public or cannot be confirmed, record it as unknown rather than filling the gap with an estimate.

What does the token actually give holders?
Start with the legal and practical terms of holding the token, not with its roadmap or community description. Read the offering documents, token terms and official project disclosures. Look for specific rights, such as access to a service, voting, a claim on an asset or proceeds, and also identify rights the documents expressly exclude. A community expectation is not necessarily an enforceable holder right.

- Use of proceeds: What does the issuer say funds will pay for, and who is responsible for using them?
- Delivery: Which product features or milestones have shipped, and which remain promises? Compare a roadmap with observable releases and usage evidence.
- Resale and refunds: Are transfers or resale restricted? Do the terms describe a refund or cancellation right?
- Issuer representations: What concrete statements has the issuer made about functionality, decentralization or future work?
Investor.gov recommends asking about rights, use of funds, plans, resale or refund terms, public code and independent cybersecurity audits when assessing an initial coin offering. Those questions are useful more broadly, but the answers must be checked against the specific asset’s terms. Investor.gov’s ICO bulletin
How to compare supply, distribution and control
A headline supply figure is not a complete picture of how many tokens may reach the market or who can affect them. Review dated project disclosures and on-chain evidence together. Distinguish current circulating supply from total or maximum supply, scheduled issuance, vesting and unlocks, and treasury holdings. Note who controls treasury assets and any administrative or upgrade keys.
Build a dated record for each candidate. If disclosures do not establish an unlock schedule, circulating amount or key holder, say so. Do not infer future selling pressure from a single supply number or assume that a published allocation is independently verified.

For a Solana token, check whether its configuration enables privileged actions and identify who holds that authority. Solana’s documentation describes supported mechanisms that can freeze an individual token account, pause transfers or seize tokens. These controls can have legitimate compliance or operational purposes; their presence alone does not prove misconduct. The important questions are whether the specific token enables them, who can invoke them, and what disclosed process or limits apply. Solana Platform: Freeze and Compliance
What to look for in a Solana token audit
Find the actual report rather than relying on an audit badge or a project’s statement that it was audited. Verify the auditor, report date, code or contract version examined, scope, findings and any unresolved issues. Check whether the published code matches the deployed version and whether the report covers the relevant token controls or only a narrower component.
Solana advises checking token addresses, looking for audit reports and researching the team. Investor.gov likewise recommends checking whether code is public and whether an independent cybersecurity audit has been conducted. An audit is evidence about a defined review at a particular time; it is not a guarantee that code is free of vulnerabilities, that administrators cannot misuse permissions, or that a project will succeed. Assess product use, market access and exit risk
Evaluate claims of adoption separately from promotion. Look for evidence that the product works and is being used, identify who must continue building or operating it, and distinguish measured activity from a roadmap, social-media following or issuer-provided projection. Token creation itself is easy; Solana lists community tokens, rewards, fundraising, gaming economies and experiments as possible uses, while warning that issuance alone creates no value. Solana: Introduction to Solana Tokens
For market access, record the venues where the token trades, any resale restrictions, and date-stamped liquidity or order-book evidence relevant to the size of position being considered. A displayed spot price is not proof that a large position can be sold near that price: the available buyers, trading depth and transfer restrictions affect the actual exit. No universal liquidity threshold fits every asset or position, so use evidence tied to the specific token and intended transaction.
Investor.gov cautions that crypto trading platforms may not be registered securities exchanges or alternative trading systems, and trading there may not provide protections available for exchange-listed stocks. It also warns that recovery after fraud or theft may be limited. A listing should therefore not be treated as a regulatory endorsement or a promise of investor protection. Investor.gov ICO bulletin

Use the same comparison table for every candidate
Complete a row for each token and cite the evidence date in your own notes. The table is a diligence template, not a ranking: missing evidence is itself relevant, but it is not proof of a particular outcome.
| Comparison area | Questions to answer | Evidence to record |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose and holder rights | What does holding the token entitle someone to? What rights are expressly absent? | Token terms, offering materials and issuer disclosures; distinguish contractual rights from community expectations. |
| Execution and dependencies | What must be built or adopted, who is expected to do the work, and what has actually shipped? | Roadmap compared with delivered product, named responsible parties and independent evidence of use. |
| Supply and distribution | What is circulating now, what may be issued or unlocked, and who controls treasury or administrative keys? | Dated disclosures and on-chain evidence; mark schedules or control details that cannot be confirmed as unknown. |
| Code and token controls | What code was audited, when and within what scope? Can accounts or transfers be restricted, and who has authority? | Published code, the dated audit and its findings, enabled token permissions and the identity of relevant administrators. |
| Market access and exit | Where can the asset trade, what restrictions apply, and is liquidity relevant to the position being considered? | Dated venue, order-book or liquidity evidence and the offering’s resale terms. |
| Legal and disclosure | What has the issuer represented, what rights attach to the asset, and what registration or exemption disclosures apply? | Offering documents, relevant SEC or EDGAR filings and official regulator materials for the applicable jurisdiction. |
| Custody and operations | Who controls the private keys, and what happens if access to a wallet or exchange account is lost? | Wallet or custodian terms and an assessment of the holder’s own key-management and recovery arrangements. |
Keep U.S. regulatory claims specific
U.S. securities treatment depends on the facts of the offering and transaction; do not infer a legal conclusion solely from a token’s name, network or technical design. The SEC’s April 22, 2026 educational material, updated April 29, describes the investment-contract analysis using the Howey factors: an investment of money in a common enterprise with a reasonable expectation of profits derived from the essential managerial efforts of others. A crypto asset and the transaction in which it is offered should not be casually collapsed into the same legal conclusion. SEC: Transactions Involving Crypto Assets
A separate SEC framework page reviewed May 15, 2026 lists SOL as an example of a digital commodity within that framework. It does not establish the legal status of every Solana project token. The same page explains that a tokenized security is a financial instrument represented by a crypto asset and that holder rights may differ materially from those of the underlying security. The SEC Division of Corporation Finance’s crypto FAQ was issued September 25, 2026 and updated September 28, 2026. The page says its answers are staff views, not an SEC rule or regulation, and have no legal force or effect. It discusses how an issuer’s own statements about functionality or decentralization, including specific promotional promises, may matter to an investment-contract analysis. For a particular offering or jurisdiction, consult a qualified legal professional rather than treating general educational material as a ruling on the asset. Account for custody and operational risk
A wallet does not hold crypto assets in the way a physical wallet holds cash; it manages the keys and passcodes used to access them. Decide whether keys are controlled by the user, a custodian or an exchange, and understand the consequences of lost credentials, compromised devices or platform failure. The project’s merits do not remove this separate operational risk. Investor.gov: Crypto Assets
A repeatable diligence workflow
- Identify the exact asset. Obtain the token or mint address from official project material and verify it; names, tickers and logos can be impersonated. Do not rely on a search result or an address shared only in an unofficial channel.
- Read the terms and promises. Record holder rights, use of proceeds, resale or refund terms, team, roadmap and specific issuer representations. Separate what is contractual from what is promotional.
- Check supply and authority. Compare dated disclosures with on-chain evidence for circulation, allocations, unlocks and privileged controls. Note anything you cannot independently confirm.
- Inspect security evidence. Locate the full audit and published code, then check report date, scope, version, findings and unresolved issues rather than treating an audit claim as a safety guarantee.
- Test delivery claims against use. Look for shipped functionality and independent evidence of adoption; do not count token issuance or ecosystem association as proof of demand.
- Examine the exit conditions. Check trading venues, dated liquidity information and transfer or resale restrictions against the position size and time horizon under consideration.
- Review legal and custody exposure. Consider applicable disclosures and jurisdiction-specific rules, then identify who controls the keys and what recovery options actually exist.
Solana’s safety checklist also advises using official project websites, checking liquidity before large purchases, using reputable information and being skeptical of guaranteed returns. Its examples of token-specific hazards include impersonation tokens, rug pulls, honeypots that can be bought but not sold, and pump-and-dump manipulation. Solana token safety guidance
