How to Compare Smartphone Benchmark Scores Without Being Misled

The safest way to compare smartphone benchmark scores is to compare the same benchmark app, version, test type and score category under similar conditions. Match CPU single-core with CPU single-core, GPU with GPU, and a short peak run with another short peak run. Update both phones, close background activity, test at room temperature, run each test at least three times, and show the spread as well as the average. Treat a benchmark as evidence about a specific workload—not a universal ranking of every phone or every user experience.

What a smartphone benchmark score actually tells you

A benchmark score is the result of one defined test on one device, with one software configuration and one set of conditions. It is not a permanent property of the phone. The app version, operating-system build, temperature, background activity, battery state, cooling behavior and test settings can all affect the result.

That is why a number without its context is incomplete. A result should identify the benchmark, version, individual test, score category, device software and run conditions. The Geekbench Mobile Benchmarks chart, for example, separates single-core and multi-core results and identifies its benchmark version and scoring baseline. Its chart is built from user-submitted results, so it is a collection of reported runs rather than a guarantee that every unit of a model will produce the same number.

Different scores answer different questions

Score category What it is useful for What it cannot establish by itself
CPU single-core Tasks that rely heavily on one active core, such as parts of app launches or lightly threaded work Overall multitasking speed, graphics performance or long-session gaming performance
CPU multi-core Work that can use several CPU cores at once How quickly a phone responds to every everyday action or how well its GPU performs
GPU or graphics Graphics-heavy workloads such as rendering and gaming-oriented tests Camera quality, modem performance, battery life or sustained frame rates outside the test
Aggregate or system score A bundled workload that combines several classes of activity Which individual component is responsible for a difference or whether your own workload matches the bundle
Stress-test result How performance changes during a long, repeated workload as heat builds The highest score the phone can produce in a short burst

3DMark documentation makes the same principle explicit: each benchmark produces a score intended for comparing similar systems, and the appropriate test depends on the hardware and workload. Its user guide describes test-specific scores rather than one universal “phone performance” number.

Are Geekbench scores comparable between Android and iPhone?

They can be compared cautiously when the phones ran the same Geekbench version and the same test category. Keep single-core and multi-core results in their own columns, and record the version shown by the chart or app. Do not compare a recent version on one operating system with an older version on the other, or treat a CPU score as a substitute for a graphics result.

Geekbench’s scoring system uses a baseline within the named benchmark context. The mobile chart says higher scores are better and that a score twice as high represents twice the performance within that stated scoring context. That ratio should not be carried across different benchmark suites, versions, tests or score types. A “twice as fast” conclusion is therefore valid only when the two numbers belong to the same scoring framework and test.

Cross-platform comparisons also need a narrower claim than many headlines use. A result shows how Android or iOS performed in that benchmark on that device under that run’s conditions. It does not prove that one operating system will feel faster in every app, because app implementations, scheduling, storage, display behavior and other system factors are outside a particular CPU or GPU test. Use the score to answer a matching workload question, not to declare a universal winner.

How to set up a fair smartphone comparison

Use this procedure whenever you are generating your own results or checking whether two published numbers are genuinely comparable.

  1. Write down the benchmark identity. Record the app name, exact version, individual test and score category. For a chart result, note the version and baseline shown by the chart.
  2. Match the workload. Compare CPU single-core with CPU single-core, CPU multi-core with CPU multi-core, and the same named graphics test with itself. Do not place unlike scores in one ranking.
  3. Update both devices. Install the current device software and benchmark version available to you, then document the versions. Mixing software generations can turn a software difference into a misleading hardware conclusion.
  4. Use the same physical environment. Test in the same room, at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and other heat sources. UL’s general benchmarking guidance recommends controlled conditions because temperature and the surrounding environment affect repeatability.
  5. Remove avoidable activity. Close background apps, disable notifications where the benchmark guidance permits it, and avoid touching the screen during the run. These controls are included in UL’s mobile-device testing guidance.
  6. Restart and allow the phone to settle. UL’s expert process recommends restarting, waiting two minutes for startup activity to finish, closing background programs and then waiting 15 minutes before running the benchmark. Follow the benchmark’s own instructions if they specify a different sequence.
  7. Run at least three times. Save every individual result, not just the highest one. Calculate the average and show the range; if the device is inconsistent, UL recommends averaging or using the mode rather than selecting the best-looking run.
  8. Repeat the same procedure on the other phone. Keep the order, room, waiting periods and number of runs consistent. If one phone is tested while warm and the other while cool, the comparison is no longer controlled.
  9. Label the result as peak or sustained. A short default run shows burst performance. A long stress test shows what happens after heat accumulates. Put those results in separate sections.

UL says its benchmark-score precision is usually better than 3% for consistently performing systems in well-controlled environments. That is a repeatability guideline, not a promise that every phone or every run will stay within 3%. Modern multitasking operating systems cannot be completely controlled, so individual runs can fall outside that margin.

Why the second run can be lower

The most important explanation is heat. A phone may begin with a cool processor and deliver a high burst result. As the workload continues, the device can reduce clock speeds or otherwise limit performance to control temperature. UL’s mobile guidance states: “Some high-powered mobile devices use thermal throttling to avoid overheating the CPU, which can lead to lower scores on successive runs.”

A lower second or third result is not automatically a faulty phone. It may show that the first run measured a short peak while later runs measured a warmer operating state. Background activity and the uncontrolled scheduling of a multitasking operating system can add variation as well. Record the sequence instead of discarding lower runs: the pattern itself is useful evidence.

  • High first score, falling later scores: investigate heat build-up and report the result as peak versus sustained performance.
  • Results that move up and down without a trend: repeat after a restart, use the same waiting period and check for background activity or notifications.
  • All runs are consistently lower than another unit: verify the exact benchmark version, test category, software updates and environmental conditions before blaming the hardware.

Peak performance versus sustained performance

A short benchmark answers, “How fast can this phone complete this workload while it is cool?” That matters for brief actions, but it does not answer, “How much performance can it maintain during a long game, render or computation?” Those are different measurements.

For mobile devices and thin-and-light laptops, UL recommends a 20-minute 3DMark stress test to show heat build-up and the effect of the cooling system. The 3DMark Reviewers’ Guide treats that long test as a way to observe performance over time, not as a replacement for a short score.

Report the two outcomes separately:

  • Peak result: the score from the normal short run, with the number of runs and spread shown.
  • Sustained behavior: the stress-test result, performance stability or decline over the 20-minute run, and the conditions under which it was measured.

Do not average a short peak score and a stress-test score into one number. Combining them hides the distinction a buyer often needs most: whether a phone is briefly fast, consistently fast, or both.

Choosing the right benchmark for the question

Start with the task, then select the test. UL’s 3DMark guidance warns that older tests may no longer produce useful scores on current hardware, so a familiar test name is not automatically the most informative choice.

For general CPU comparisons

Use a CPU benchmark that reports separate single-core and multi-core results. Keep those lists separate when sorting phones. A phone with a stronger single-core result may respond well to lightly threaded work while another with a stronger multi-core result may finish parallel workloads sooner.

For gaming and graphics

Use the same named graphics test and compare devices from similar performance classes. Check whether the result is a short score or a stress-test outcome. A graphics score cannot tell you how a particular game’s engine, resolution, frame-rate cap or graphics settings will behave unless those conditions are also matched.

For a broad system impression

An aggregate test can be useful as a quick overview, but inspect its component results before drawing a conclusion. Two phones can reach similar totals through different strengths, and your workload may emphasize only one part of the bundle.

How to read benchmark charts and published reviews

First check whether the chart is a live collection of submissions or a controlled lab table. The Geekbench mobile chart uses user-submitted results, so entries can reflect different temperatures, software builds, storage states and run procedures. Treat a cluster of results as more informative than one unusually high entry, and do not assume the highest listed number is the normal result for every retail unit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Next look for the details that make a score auditable:

  • Phone model and memory/storage variant, when listed
  • Operating-system version and benchmark version
  • Single-core, multi-core, GPU or aggregate category
  • Individual runs, average, median or range
  • Room temperature and cooling conditions
  • Whether the phone was cool, warm or tested repeatedly
  • Whether the result came from a short run or a stress test

If a page gives only one number and none of this context, use it as a rough clue rather than a precise head-to-head measurement. A score can be genuine and still be a poor comparison if its test identity or conditions are unknown.

How much variation is meaningful?

UL’s “usually better than 3%” precision statement applies to consistently performing systems in well-controlled environments. It does not turn a 3% difference into a universal rule for every phone. Use the number as a reason to repeat close comparisons, not as permission to ignore all variation.

For your own test, show the individual values and the range. For example, if three runs produce 1,980, 1,955 and 1,962, the spread is visible and readers can see that the first value is not being presented as the device’s guaranteed performance. If the runs are unstable, report that instability and use the average or mode as UL recommends. Never remove a low run solely because it weakens a preferred conclusion; investigate the cause and describe the test sequence.

Common ways smartphone comparisons go wrong

Comparing unlike score types

A CPU multi-core score and a GPU score measure different workloads. Even two numbers from the same app may answer unrelated questions. Put each category in its own comparison.

Mixing benchmark versions

Benchmark versions can change workloads, scoring and baselines. A version number belongs next to the score, not in a footnote that readers cannot find.

Ranking phones by the highest submitted result

User-submitted charts contain real results but not identical test conditions. A peak entry may be an outlier. Look at the distribution and the test metadata where available.

Running one phone cool and the other warm

Heat changes repeat runs. Use the same room and waiting periods, and do not compare a first run on one device with a third run on another.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reporting only the average

An average can conceal a wide spread. Include the individual runs or at least the range so readers can judge consistency.

Using a short score to predict a long gaming session

A short run measures burst performance. Use a 20-minute 3DMark stress test when the question is sustained graphics performance, and label it separately from the default score.

Assuming a benchmark settles every real-world question

A benchmark establishes performance in its named test under its named conditions. It does not, by itself, prove better cameras, reception, battery life, software support, app behavior or comfort. Those require other evidence and workload-specific testing.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Do benchmark scores show real-world performance?

They can inform a real-world decision when the benchmark matches the task and the comparison is controlled. A CPU test is relevant to CPU-heavy work; a graphics test is relevant to graphics-heavy work; a stress test is relevant to performance maintained over time. The farther your use is from the benchmark’s workload, the weaker the inference.

The most defensible conclusion is narrow: “Phone A scored higher than Phone B in this named test, version and condition.” A broader statement such as “Phone A is better for everyone” requires additional evidence about the user’s apps, sustained behavior and other device characteristics. Benchmark scores are one measurement, not a complete experience rating.

A practical decision framework

If you care about everyday responsiveness

Start with matched CPU single-core results, then check multi-core results for heavier multitasking. Favor a consistent cluster of runs over one record score. If the difference is small, treat it as inconclusive until both devices are tested under the same conditions.

If you care about gaming

Use the same graphics test, then inspect sustained behavior with a stress test. A phone that posts a high short score but falls sharply during the 20-minute run may not deliver the same advantage in a long session.

If you care about intensive creation or computation

Use multi-core results and sustained testing, because repeated workloads can expose heat-related limits. Record the time sequence rather than relying on the first result.

If you are comparing Android with iPhone

Use the same Geekbench version and category, keep single-core and multi-core separate, and avoid carrying score ratios into another suite. State that the result is benchmark-specific and do not treat it as proof that every app will behave identically.

What to do when your results look wrong

  1. Check identity first: confirm the app version, test name and score category on both devices.
  2. Repeat after a restart: wait two minutes for startup activity, close background apps and allow the recommended settling period.
  3. Check the environment: move away from sunlight or another heat source and test at room temperature.
  4. Run three or more times: save every result and calculate the range and average.
  5. Look for a thermal pattern: a downward sequence suggests heat-related throttling; a random pattern suggests uncontrolled background activity or inconsistent conditions.
  6. Separate peak from sustained testing: use the short run for burst performance and the 20-minute 3DMark stress test for heat and cooling behavior.
  7. Report the limitation: if the device remains inconsistent, say so instead of selecting the most favorable value.

For PCMark mobile testing specifically, UL’s guidance recommends a 15-minute cooling period before and after runs. Use that requirement where applicable, while following the exact instructions for the benchmark you are running.

What a trustworthy comparison should publish

A useful comparison lets another reader understand and, where practical, reproduce the test. Include:

  • The exact benchmark and version
  • The individual test and score category
  • Device software and meaningful hardware variants
  • Room and heat conditions
  • Background-app and notification controls
  • Number of runs, every result or the full range, and the averaging method
  • Whether the result is a short peak run or a sustained stress test
  • A conclusion limited to the workload the benchmark actually measured

This level of reporting prevents a common mistake: turning a precise measurement of one workload into an imprecise claim about the entire phone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line

Compare smartphone scores only after matching the benchmark, version, test category and conditions. Run each phone at least three times, show the spread, and distinguish a cool-device peak from performance maintained under heat. Geekbench’s separate CPU categories and user-submitted chart are useful when their version and baseline are preserved; 3DMark’s test-specific scores and 20-minute stress guidance help answer graphics and sustained-performance questions. The result is strongest when it stays narrow: it tells you how these devices performed in this workload, not which phone is universally better.
