The most reliable way to compare smart TVs is to work from the room outward: choose a screen size for your seating distance, compare the actual panel and backlight performance, verify HDR formats alongside brightness and contrast, then check gaming ports and the streaming apps you use. “OLED,” “Mini LED,” “HDR,” and “smart TV” are useful starting labels, not guarantees of how a particular model will look or operate.
No single size or display technology is best for every room. A careful comparison uses the exact model number, its physical dimensions, measured picture performance, port capabilities, regional app availability and current price.

Start with seating distance and field of view
Screen size matters because it determines how much of your vision the picture occupies at a given distance. A very large television can feel overwhelming at close range, while a small one may make films, sports scores and game interfaces harder to see from a sofa across the room.

RTINGS reports the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) recommendation of at least a 30-degree field of vision for mixed use. A 40-degree field is a more immersive cinema reference. These are viewing-distance recommendations, not a guarantee that every viewer will prefer the result.

| Screen size | Approximate distance for 30° mixed use | Approximate distance for 40° cinema immersion |
|---|---|---|
| 65 inches | 8 ft 10 in | 6 ft 6 in |
For a 65-inch set, someone seated around 8 feet 10 inches away is near the mixed-use reference, while a seat around 6 feet 6 inches away creates the more immersive cinema angle. If your seat falls between those points, decide whether everyday television or a cinema-like presentation matters more. The figures are useful anchors rather than rigid rules.
Measure the television, not just the diagonal
The diagonal size printed on a box does not tell you whether the cabinet will fit. Before ordering, record the exact model’s width, height, depth, stand footprint and weight. Check the opening of an entertainment unit, the clearance below a shelf, and the distance between stand feet. If you plan to wall-mount it, measure the wall area and verify the mount specification for that model.
- Measure the viewing distance from your normal eye position, not from the front edge of the coffee table.
- Account for a soundbar or other equipment that may sit in front of the screen.
- Check whether the supplied stand has multiple positions; some sets require more width than the panel itself.
- Leave room for ventilation and for the cables to bend without pressing against the wall.
Account for room lighting
Windows, lamps and light-colored walls can reflect from a glossy screen and reduce perceived contrast. Note where light sources are located during the hours you normally watch. A television that looks excellent in a dark showroom may need stronger brightness or better reflection handling in a sunny living room. Treat brightness and reflections as room-specific performance questions, not as consequences of screen size alone.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Understand what OLED and Mini LED actually describe
Display labels do not all refer to the same part of a television. OLED describes pixels that emit their own light. An OLED pixel can turn itself off, which gives the technology a fundamental black-level advantage in dark scenes. Mini LED describes an LCD television’s backlighting approach: the set uses many smaller LEDs and local-dimming zones behind an LCD panel.
OLED: self-emissive pixels
Because each OLED pixel controls its own light, bright objects can appear against very dark backgrounds without a conventional backlight illuminating the entire panel. This is why OLED models generally have an advantage for black levels and dark-room contrast. You still need to examine the individual model’s brightness, reflections and viewing-angle behavior; the OLED label does not describe every aspect of the picture.
Mini LED: LCD with a more precise backlight
Mini LED is a backlight design, not a complete picture-quality specification. Smaller LEDs can support more localized dimming than a basic LCD backlight, but the result depends on the LCD panel, the number and arrangement of zones, and the software controlling them. Two Mini LED televisions can therefore produce noticeably different black levels, blooming control and highlight brightness.
Why dimming-zone counts are not a verdict
RTINGS’ testing discussion cautions that a higher zone count alone does not determine black-level performance. The dimming algorithm decides how aggressively a television reacts when a bright object moves across a dark scene. A set with fewer zones but better control can outperform one with a larger advertised number. Compare measured results and photographs or descriptions of difficult scenes when those are available, rather than ranking models by zone count.

Do not treat manufacturer category names as universal definitions
LG states that selected QNED models use Mini LED, but that does not make QNED a universal synonym for Mini LED across manufacturers or product lines. Read the exact model specification to identify the panel and backlight technology. “Premium,” “quantum,” or other marketing terms may describe a family rather than a single standardized design.

Compare these picture characteristics on the exact model
| Characteristic | What to examine | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Black level and contrast | How dark scenes look, including shadow detail and bright objects on dark backgrounds | Determines depth in films and games, especially in a dim room |
| Brightness | Sustained brightness and highlight behavior, not only a peak number | Helps HDR highlights stand out and counters ambient light |
| Viewing angle | Color, contrast and brightness changes when seated away from center | Important for wide sofas or open-plan rooms |
| Reflection handling | How strongly windows and lamps appear on the screen | Can matter more than a small specification difference in a bright room |
RTINGS’ 2025 comparison describes testing 45 Mini LED and OLED televisions under its 2.01 methodology. Those results characterize the tested models; they are not category-wide statistics. Use them to compare specific sets, and confirm that the size and regional version you are considering is the one tested.
Compare HDR as format support plus image performance
High Dynamic Range is not a single switch. A television must support the HDR format used by your content, and it must have enough contrast and brightness to display the intended difference between dark areas and bright highlights.
Check the formats for the exact series and market
HDR10 and Dolby Vision are examples of HDR formats. LG’s buying guide notes that support depends on the series. Do not infer support from a brand name or from another size in the same family. Record the formats listed for the exact model and regional SKU.

| Brightness | How bright the set remains in real scenes and whether highlights retain impact in your room |
| Contrast and local control | Whether bright highlights can coexist with dark blacks without excessive lift or blooming |
| Content source | Whether the program, disc, console or streaming title is actually mastered in HDR |
A format logo cannot compensate for weak contrast or insufficient brightness. Conversely, a television with strong picture performance may still be a poor match if it lacks the format your main sources require. The available evidence does not establish one HDR format as universally superior, so compare support and performance together.
Check refresh rate, HDMI ports and gaming features
Gamers should treat connectivity as a model-level specification. LG’s guide identifies HDMI 2.1, variable-refresh compatibility and a high refresh rate as relevant gaming considerations. A television can advertise one of these features while limiting it to particular ports or input modes.
Make a port map before buying
- List every device you expect to connect: consoles, a computer, a soundbar and any other source.
- Write down how many HDMI inputs the exact television provides.
- Check which individual ports support HDMI 2.1 rather than assuming every input does.
- Verify which ports support variable refresh and the high refresh rate you intend to use.
- Reserve compatible inputs for devices that need them, and confirm that the remaining ports are sufficient for your other equipment.
Port count matters when a console and soundbar both need a direct connection. If the specification only says “HDMI 2.1 compatible” without identifying the number of ports or supported capabilities, look for the detailed model manual or regional specification before making the decision.
Match features to your games
A high refresh rate is useful only when the game device and game can deliver the relevant signal. Variable refresh can help coordinate the television and a compatible source, but support must exist on both sides. Compare the television’s documented capabilities with your console or computer rather than paying for a feature you cannot use.
Evaluate the smart platform around your actual viewing habits
RTINGS defines a smart TV as an internet-connected television with built-in streaming applications. That convenience is valuable only if the services and controls you need are available on the specific model in your region.

Build an app and feature checklist
- Write down every streaming service, broadcaster app or media service you use regularly.
- Check the television’s current app catalog for your country, not a list from another market.
- Confirm that the model has the navigation, search and accessibility features you rely on.
- Consider how quickly you can reach inputs, live television and frequently used apps.
- Check whether the advertised smart functions belong to the exact operating-system version and model year.
App availability, software features and model names can vary by market, date and size. A product page for a neighboring model is not proof that your chosen SKU has the same services. Verify the regional model number immediately before purchase.
Do not let the platform outweigh the picture without a reason
RTINGS advises most shoppers to prioritize picture quality or features that match their use rather than over-weighting the smart platform. If two televisions meet your picture, size and connectivity requirements, the easier interface may be the sensible tie-breaker. If one set lacks a service you consider essential, however, that is a decisive compatibility problem rather than a minor interface preference.
LG Electronics India summarizes the balance this way: "In short, the right TV is a mix of screen size that suits your room, resolution that matches your content, and a smart platform that actually understands what you want to watch, hear, or ask." The statement appears in LG’s Smart TV Buying Guide for Beginners; treat it as a description of the factors to balance, not as a claim that one platform is best for everyone.
Use an exact-model comparison worksheet
Once you have two or more candidates, record their details in one place. This prevents a favorable specification from one size or region being accidentally applied to another.
| Comparison field | Record for each candidate | Decision question |
|---|---|---|
| Exact model and region | Full model number, size and market | Are you comparing the same series and regional version? |
| Room fit | Viewing distance, cabinet width and height, stand footprint, mount dimensions | Will it fit safely and give the field of view you want? |
| Display system | OLED or LCD/Mini LED description, plus panel details stated by the manufacturer | Does the technology suit your room lighting and contrast priorities? |
| Picture performance | Measured black level, contrast, brightness, viewing angle and reflection behavior where available | How does the actual set perform, rather than the category label? |
| HDR | Supported formats and relevant brightness/contrast observations | Will your HDR sources display correctly and convincingly? |
| Gaming | Refresh rate, variable-refresh support, HDMI 2.1 ports and other documented capabilities | Can every intended device use the features it needs? |
| Smart functions | Required apps, navigation features and regional availability | Will the built-in platform cover your normal viewing? |
| Price and availability | Current price, seller, stock and return terms | Is this the exact model and offer you can actually buy? |
Price is intentionally the last check because it changes over time and the available sources do not establish current prices. Compare offers for the same size and model number, and note whether a displayed amount is a temporary promotion or a recurring price before treating it as a fair comparison.
A practical decision sequence
1. Define the room and use
Measure the seating distance, identify light sources and decide whether the television is mainly for mixed programming, films, sports, gaming or a combination. This establishes the field of view and the picture characteristics worth prioritizing.
2. Choose a size range
Use the 30-degree mixed-use and 40-degree cinema references as starting points, then check the physical dimensions and furniture constraints. Do not choose a universal size without the room measurements.

3. Shortlist the display approaches
Consider OLED when self-emissive pixels and dark-scene black levels fit your priorities. Consider Mini LED LCD models when their specific brightness, panel and local-dimming behavior suit your room. Then compare tested model performance rather than stopping at the label.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common comparison mistakes
Choosing by diagonal alone
A larger screen is not automatically better. Without seating distance, a large panel can create an uncomfortable field of view, and without cabinet measurements it may not fit the intended furniture.
Assuming Mini LED means identical performance
Mini LED identifies the backlight approach. Panel characteristics and dimming algorithms still determine the visible result, so compare the tested television rather than the technology name.
Counting dimming zones as a picture-quality score
Zone count does not by itself establish black levels or blooming control. The algorithm’s behavior in real scenes is part of the performance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBuying on peak brightness or a logo
A peak-brightness figure and an HDR logo each describe only one part of the experience. Consider sustained scene brightness, contrast, reflections and format support together.

Assuming every HDMI input is equivalent
Capabilities can differ from one port to another. Check the per-port specification before connecting a console and soundbar and discovering that the required feature is unavailable on the remaining input.
Assuming a neighboring size has the same features
HDR support, app availability, ports and panel characteristics can vary by size, market and date. Verify the full model number, not just the family name.
What “best” means for different rooms
Mixed-use living room
Start with the 30-degree field-of-view reference, then emphasize reflection handling, viewing angle and the apps used by the household. Compare contrast and brightness in the room’s normal lighting rather than relying on a dark-room demonstration.
Film-focused, dim room
The 40-degree reference provides a more immersive target. Black-level performance and contrast deserve particular attention, making the actual behavior of OLED and the local-dimming control of Mini LED models important comparison points.
Gaming setup
Begin with the distance and screen size, then prioritize the refresh rate, variable-refresh support and HDMI capabilities your console or computer can use. Confirm the port map before purchase.
Shared room with off-center seating
Give viewing-angle behavior and reflection handling more weight. A television that looks excellent directly in front of the panel may be less satisfying to viewers sitting to the side.
Final checks before you pay
- Have you measured the seat-to-screen distance and checked it against your preferred field of view?
- Have you measured the cabinet, stand and wall-mount space?
- Have you identified whether the exact set is OLED or an LCD design such as Mini LED?
- Have you compared black levels, contrast, brightness, viewing angle and reflections on the actual model?
- Have you confirmed HDR formats for your region and considered brightness and contrast together?
- Have you mapped every console, computer and soundbar to the required HDMI ports?
- Have you verified the required streaming apps and smart features on the exact regional SKU?
- Have you recorded the current price and availability for that same model and size?
The strongest comparison is therefore not “OLED versus Mini LED” in the abstract or “which TV has the most features.” It is a room-specific, model-specific match between viewing distance, physical fit, picture behavior, HDR sources, connected devices, streaming needs and the price available when you buy.
