The reliable way to compare semiconductor stocks is to compare like businesses in the right order: identify how each company makes money, map its products and end markets, test whether growth converts into cash through a cycle, measure the capital required to sustain that growth, and only then compare valuation with genuinely similar peers. A fabless designer, an integrated manufacturer, and a wafer-fabrication equipment supplier can all be called semiconductor companies while having very different economics.

This framework uses disclosed company examples and reported figures, but it does not provide current share prices or trading multiples. Those must be collected on a clearly stated date before making a valuation judgment.

Start with the business model, not the ticker symbol

A semiconductor company’s position in the value chain determines what drives revenue, margins, cash flow, and risk. Classify the company before comparing its growth rate or valuation. The categories overlap: a company may own some production, outsource other steps, and report segments with different economics. Verify the current mix in the latest annual report or regulatory filing.

Business model How it earns revenue Economic features to examine Illustrative disclosed example
Integrated manufacturer Designs and manufactures chips, owning meaningful process, plant, and capacity decisions. Factory utilization, process technology, capacity additions, depreciation, yield, inventory, and supply control. Texas Instruments describes designing and manufacturing analog and embedded-processing semiconductors.
Fabless designer Designs and sells chips while using outside foundries and contractors for fabrication, assembly, and test. Product differentiation, foundry access, wafer pricing, capacity allocation, supplier concentration, and lower direct capital requirements. Rambus describes a fabless model that uses third parties for fabrication, assembly, and test.
Component supplier Sells standard products, specialized components, or a combination of both. Product breadth, pricing power, distributor inventory, manufacturing footprint, qualification cycles, and end-market diversity. Diodes Incorporated describes standard semiconductor products and a hybrid manufacturing model.
Equipment, test, or materials supplier Sells tools, testing services, or materials used by chip manufacturers. Customer capital-expenditure plans, order timing, backlog or cancellations, service revenue, and concentration among large buyers. These suppliers follow manufacturing-investment budgets rather than chip revenue in a one-for-one manner.

Manufacturing ownership is not automatically better or worse. An owned fab can provide control over technology, supply, and capacity, but it commits the company to large investments and exposes earnings to utilization and execution. Outsourcing can reduce direct capital needs and preserve flexibility, while creating dependence on foundry and assembly availability, pricing, and allocation decisions.

Map products and end markets before judging growth

Headline revenue growth is only a starting point. Build a product and customer map that answers four questions:

  • Which products generated the growth: mature standard parts, differentiated components, processors, memory, software-linked products, or services?
  • Which end markets bought them: automotive, industrial, communications, consumer, computing, data-center, or another category?
  • How concentrated are customers, distributors, foundries, and critical suppliers?
  • Was the change organic, or did acquisitions, pricing, currency, inventory normalization, or an unusually small prior-year base do most of the work?

onsemi’s 2025 filing illustrates why mix matters. Automotive represented 51% of its 2025 revenue, industrial 28%, and other markets 21%. The company defines the other category to include AI data-center, computing, consumer, networking, communications, and additional markets. These are onsemi-specific shares, not a description of the semiconductor industry. Its stated development priorities include power management for AI data centers, vehicle electrification, energy systems, and sensing. Treat those priorities as management’s strategy and expectation, not as independent confirmation that the markets will meet a forecast.

Separate design wins from recognized revenue

A design win can create a multiyear opportunity, but it is not the same as a purchase order or reported sales. Check when a product is expected to enter production, how many units are committed, the expected content per system, qualification status, and whether a single customer or platform accounts for the opportunity. A company growing from a very small base can report a striking percentage increase without changing its overall earnings power.

Inspect inventory and order conditions

Channel inventory, customer destocking, bookings, cancellations, lead times, and backlog can make quarterly growth appear stronger or weaker than underlying demand. Compare several periods and read management’s discussion of distributors and customers. A recovery from an inventory correction is not equivalent to durable share gain.

Use a through-cycle financial scorecard

For each candidate, collect at least several years of revenue, gross margin, operating margin, research and development, capital expenditure, working-capital investment, operating cash flow, debt, and free cash flow. A single strong quarter can reflect utilization, inventory movements, or temporarily low investment rather than durable product economics.

Metric What it tells you Questions to ask
Revenue growth Change in reported sales. How much came from volume, price, acquisitions, currency, market recovery, or a low comparison base?
Gross margin Product economics after manufacturing or product costs. Is the margin supported by mix and pricing, or by unusually high utilization and favorable inventory absorption?
Operating margin Profit after research, development, selling, and administrative costs. Are expenses scaling with sales, and are acquisition or restructuring costs affecting comparability?
Research and development Investment needed to maintain or extend the product roadmap. Is spending producing new design wins, or is a company underinvesting to protect near-term earnings?
Capital expenditure Cash committed to fabs, equipment, facilities, and other productive assets. Is spending maintenance, expansion, or a response to a temporary shortage?
Operating cash flow Cash generated by operations before investment. Do receivables, inventory, payables, or customer deposits create a temporary boost or drag?
Free cash flow Cash left after capital expenditure, commonly calculated as operating cash flow minus capital expenditure. Is it normalized for the cycle, and can it support debt reduction, dividends, buybacks, and future investment?
Debt and liquidity Balance-sheet resilience during a downturn. When do maturities arrive, and could a cyclical trough force equity issuance or cutbacks?

Texas Instruments states that it views long-term free-cash-flow-per-share growth as its preferred measure of progress. Its 2025 reported figures were $17.68 billion of revenue, $7.15 billion of cash flow from operations, $2.94 billion of free cash flow, and $4.55 billion of capital expenditures. Because capital spending was elevated, contemporaneous free cash flow was materially affected by that investment; compare it with earlier and later years rather than treating 2025 as a permanent run rate.

“Technology is the foundation of our company, but ultimately, our objective and the best metric for owners to measure our progress is through the growth of free cash flow per share over the long term.” — Texas Instruments, 2025 Form 10-K

Measure capital intensity and manufacturing dependence

Two companies with similar operating margins can have very different owner economics if one must continually build factories and the other buys capacity from a foundry. Texas Instruments reported approximately $24 billion of capital expenditure over 2016–2025. Rambus describes outsourcing manufacturing to reduce capital requirements and retain flexibility. These are company statements, not universal benchmarks.

For integrated manufacturers

  • Compare depreciation with capital expenditure to see whether the asset base is being replenished.
  • Separate maintenance spending from new-fab or capacity-expansion projects.
  • Track utilization, yield, production starts, and the time required for new capacity to reach economic output.
  • Test whether a downturn would leave the company paying for underused factories.

For fabless companies

  • Identify the primary foundries, assembly and test providers, and the products tied to each.
  • Examine wafer pricing, capacity commitments, minimum purchases, and lead-time exposure where disclosed.
  • Check whether a supplier constraint could limit sales even when customer demand is strong.
  • Assess whether lower capital expenditure is offset by lower gross margins, advance payments, or concentration risk.

Working capital deserves the same discipline. Rising inventory can support future shipments, or it can signal obsolete products and a coming write-down. Receivables growth can reflect genuine sales or looser customer terms. Compare cash conversion with revenue and operating income over several years.

Analyze equipment and test suppliers on their own cycle

Equipment, test, and materials suppliers sell into manufacturers’ investment budgets. Their revenue may rise when chip demand is weak if customers are adding strategic capacity, and fall when chip demand is healthy if customers pause expansion. Evaluate order timing, cancellations, backlog where disclosed, service revenue, customer concentration, and the investment plans of major customers.

Do not substitute a chipmaker’s utilization rate for an equipment supplier’s demand outlook. The relationship is indirect and delayed: a manufacturer may place an equipment order well before a fab produces commercial wafers, while a cancellation can arrive before the effect appears in industry revenue. Comparable current order and backlog figures are not established across all suppliers, so record each company’s disclosure rather than forcing a uniform comparison.

Understand how cyclical semiconductor stocks are

Semiconductor earnings can move sharply because customers and distributors adjust inventory, product generations change quickly, factories have high fixed costs, and end markets do not peak at the same time. The same company can look inexpensive at a cyclical earnings peak and expensive at a trough if you use a trailing price-to-earnings ratio without normalization.

Build a cycle view using:

  • At least one strong-demand period, one correction, and the recovery between them.
  • Revenue, gross-margin, operating-margin, and free-cash-flow ranges rather than only averages.
  • Inventory days, utilization, lead times, and cancellations where the company reports them.
  • Customer concentration and exposure to one product generation or end market.
  • Balance-sheet liquidity sufficient to fund research and development and essential capacity through a downturn.

Industry statistics also need precise scope. WSTS figures reported by STMicroelectronics for 2025 showed semiconductor industry revenue up approximately 26% year over year to about $792 billion for the total addressable market, while the serviceable addressable market rose approximately 15% to about $279 billion. These are differently scoped market measures attributed to WSTS, not a company’s growth rate and not a forward forecast. A company can grow faster or slower than either measure because of its product mix, share changes, geography, and inventory position.

Compare valuation only with an appropriate peer set

Valuation ratios are prompts for explanation, not rankings. Before calculating a multiple, write down the date, currency, share class, market-capitalization or enterprise-value definition, earnings basis, and data source. Label earnings as trailing, forward, or normalized.

Ratio Useful for Common semiconductor-specific trap
Price-to-earnings Comparing equity value with profit when earnings are reasonably representative. A peak or trough in a cycle can make the ratio look artificially low or high.
Enterprise value to EBITDA Comparing businesses with different debt and cash balances. EBITDA does not pay for the capital expenditure required to build or maintain fabs and equipment.
Price-to-sales Early-stage or temporarily unprofitable companies where sales are more stable than earnings. It ignores margin, product mix, working capital, and reinvestment differences.
Free-cash-flow yield Assessing cash returned relative to equity value when cash flow is normalized. Factory investment and cyclical working capital can depress or inflate the latest figure.

Build peers by economics, not by industry label

A defensible peer group matches product economics, end-market mix, growth durability, margins, capital intensity, customer concentration, and balance-sheet risk. A fabless analog designer should not be valued against a wafer-fabrication equipment supplier merely because both report semiconductor-related revenue. If no close peer exists, explain the mismatch and use a range of scenarios rather than a false precision point estimate.

Normalize the denominator

For a cyclical company, estimate a through-cycle operating margin or free-cash-flow level using multiple years and explicit assumptions. Adjust for unusual utilization, inventory charges, restructuring, acquisition effects, and temporary tax items. Show the assumptions that produce a normalized earnings or cash-flow figure; do not call a stock cheap or expensive without showing both the peer set and the denominator.

No current share prices or trading multiples are provided here, so a current valuation conclusion is not supported. Refresh market capitalization, enterprise value, reported quarters, consensus or normalized earnings, and cash-flow data on the same as-of date before drawing one.

Check concentration, supply, and geopolitical risks

Read the risk factors, but translate them into measurable exposures. Management’s disclosure identifies scenarios it considers material; it does not predict whether or when they will occur.

  • Customer concentration: quantify the share of sales from major customers and determine whether a lost design win would affect a product line or the whole company.
  • End-market concentration: compare automotive, industrial, communications, consumer, computing, and data-center exposure with the cycle and replacement pattern of each market.
  • Supplier dependence: identify foundries, assembly and test houses, substrates, chemicals, equipment makers, and other single-source inputs.
  • Factory and utilization risk: test the effect of lower volumes on gross margin, inventory absorption, and cash flow.
  • Technology replacement: estimate how quickly a product generation can become obsolete and how much research and development is required to remain qualified.
  • Geopolitical and trade exposure: map manufacturing and sales by region, export controls, tariffs, and restrictions that could change access to customers or suppliers.
  • Balance-sheet risk: compare debt maturities, cash, committed capital projects, and the ability to fund a downturn without cutting essential development.

A repeatable semiconductor-stock comparison workflow

  1. Set the comparison date. Use the latest available annual and quarterly filings, and record the exact market-data timestamp for prices and multiples.
  2. Write a one-sentence business description. State whether the company is integrated, fabless, a component supplier, an equipment or test supplier, or a hybrid.
  3. Draw the value-chain map. List design, wafer fabrication, assembly, testing, distribution, and the parties controlling each step.
  4. Break out products and end markets. Record segment revenue, geographic exposure, customer concentration, and any disclosed design-win or backlog information.
  5. Reconcile growth. Separate organic volume, price, acquisitions, currency, inventory recovery, and base effects.
  6. Build a five-year financial table. Include revenue, gross margin, operating margin, research and development, capital expenditure, operating cash flow, free cash flow, debt, and working capital.
  7. Estimate through-cycle economics. Mark the strongest, weakest, and recovery periods and explain what caused the changes.
  8. Score reinvestment needs. Compare capital expenditure and research intensity with the growth opportunity and the company’s ability to finance both.
  9. Construct a true peer set. Match business model, product economics, markets, margins, cyclicality, concentration, and balance sheet before selecting a multiple.
  10. Calculate and label valuation. Show price-to-earnings, enterprise value to EBITDA, price-to-sales, and free-cash-flow yield only with their date, currency, share class, and trailing, forward, or normalized basis.
  11. Stress-test the thesis. Model lower utilization, customer loss, foundry constraints, delayed design wins, higher capital spending, and a weaker end market.
  12. Write the decision rule. State which assumptions must hold for the valuation to work and what evidence would invalidate them.

How the framework distinguishes common company types

Texas Instruments combines design and manufacturing in analog and embedded processing and emphasizes manufacturing, product breadth, and capital allocation as parts of its long-term cash-generation strategy. Its reported capital investment makes utilization and return on new capacity central questions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rambus presents a fabless model in which third parties perform fabrication, assembly, and test. The comparison therefore shifts toward intellectual property, product adoption, foundry access, supplier terms, and the durability of design wins rather than owned-factory utilization.

Diodes Incorporated describes standard semiconductor products and a hybrid manufacturing footprint. Its analysis should combine standard-product pricing and inventory conditions with the economics of the production it owns and the steps it outsources.

onsemi’s 2025 mix, with automotive at 51%, industrial at 28%, and other markets at 21%, makes vehicle cycles, industrial investment, energy systems, sensing, and the company’s AI data-center exposure relevant to growth and risk analysis. Those percentages should not be transferred to another chipmaker without that company’s own disclosure.

What a complete comparison should show the reader

A useful side-by-side worksheet lets a reader see the reason for every difference in valuation. Include the business model and manufacturing ownership; product and end-market mix; reported and organic growth; gross and operating margins; research and development; capital expenditure; through-cycle cash generation; customer and supplier concentration; balance-sheet risk; and the valuation date and earnings basis.

If a figure is not disclosed on a comparable basis, mark it as not stated and explain the limitation. Do not fill gaps with an industry average that belongs to a different business model. The strongest comparison is often the one that identifies an important uncertainty rather than hiding it behind a precise-looking multiple.

Bottom line

Compare semiconductor stocks as different industrial and technology businesses, not as interchangeable tickers. Classify the value-chain role, verify where growth comes from, test margins and cash flow through the cycle, account for manufacturing and reinvestment requirements, map concentration and supply risks, and then value each company against peers with similar economics. Updating the filings and market data on one stated date is essential because the conclusion can change when utilization, capital spending, inventory, or the earnings denominator changes.
