A fabless chip designer, an integrated device manufacturer (IDM), a pure-play foundry, a memory producer, an outsourced assembly and test provider, and a chip-equipment supplier face different costs, customers, cycles, and capital requirements.
Use the same fiscal periods and currency, separate growth from currency effects, read gross and operating margins alongside utilization and capital intensity, measure customer concentration from each company’s own disclosure, and calculate valuation multiples from market data on one stated date. Without those controls, a leaderboard can make unlike businesses look directly comparable when they are not.

Start with the business model, not the revenue ranking
Semiconductor companies occupy different positions in the value chain. Their reported revenue and margins reflect that position as much as management execution. Identify the model for the consolidated company and, when it has several businesses, for each reportable segment.
| Business model | Primary revenue source | Typical manufacturing exposure | What most affects margins | Customer pattern |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fabless designer | Chip design, intellectual property and finished-chip sales; production is outsourced | Low owned-fab capital, but dependence on foundry and packaging capacity | Product mix, design wins, wafer and packaging prices, R&D and inventory charges | Can have broad channels or a few very large platform customers |
| Integrated device manufacturer (IDM) | Designs and manufactures its own chips, sometimes also using outside foundries | High owned-factory, equipment and maintenance requirements | Factory utilization, yields, depreciation, process transitions and product mix | Often diversified by product family, but concentration can exist in a major end market |
| Pure-play foundry | Wafer manufacturing services for customers’ designs | Very high capital expenditure and fixed-cost absorption | Node mix, utilization, yield, pricing, depreciation and process complexity | Customer concentration and technology qualification are central risks |
| Memory producer | Commodity or specialized memory chips | High fab investment and substantial inventory exposure | Memory pricing, bit supply, utilization, inventory write-downs and capex discipline | Demand follows computing, mobile, automotive and industrial cycles |
| Outsourced assembly, test and packaging (OSAT) | Packaging, assembly and testing for chip companies | Meaningful equipment and facility investment, generally below a leading-edge foundry | Volume, package mix, utilization, labor and equipment costs | Often tied to a set of customers’ production schedules |
| Semiconductor-equipment supplier | Wafer-fabrication, inspection, metrology or packaging equipment and service | Does not own customers’ wafer fabs, but funds its own manufacturing and R&D | Backlog, service mix, installed base, customer capex and product cycles | Equipment markets can be concentrated among a few large manufacturers |
Some companies combine these categories. A hybrid label should be supported by segment disclosures rather than a marketing description. Microchip Technology illustrates why: 65% of its fiscal 2026 net sales came from products manufactured at outside wafer foundries, compared with 64% in fiscal 2025. That fact shows meaningful outsourced production exposure; it does not create a universal rule for classifying every company as fabless or an IDM.

Why model classification changes the conclusion
A foundry can grow revenue while investing tens of billions of dollars in capacity that depresses near-term free cash flow. A fabless designer can report a high gross margin while carrying little factory depreciation, yet still face wafer allocation, packaging constraints and large R&D commitments. A memory producer may show a sharp earnings swing because selling prices move faster than its costs. Compare each company with peers that have a similar economic engine before drawing a ranking.
Put every company on a comparable reporting basis
Before calculating growth or margins, create a comparison sheet with the period, fiscal year-end, currency, consolidation scope and accounting basis for every figure. Calendar-year data and fiscal-year data can describe different market conditions even when both are labeled “2025.”
- Record the fiscal period. Write the exact fiscal year or quarter and the year-end date. Do not combine a company’s fiscal 2026 with another company’s calendar 2026 without showing the mismatch.
- Choose a currency. Convert revenue, profit and cash flow to one currency using a stated average rate for income-statement figures and an appropriate period-end rate for balance-sheet figures. Keep the company’s reported currency in a separate column.
- Separate reported and organic growth. Acquisitions, divestitures and currency movements can inflate or reduce reported growth. Use constant-currency or organic figures only when the company defines and discloses them.
- Match consolidation scope. Check whether a figure is consolidated, segment-only, pro forma or adjusted. Reconcile non-GAAP figures to the reported accounts when possible.
- Label one-time items. Inventory reserves, impairment, restructuring, acquisition accounting and tax benefits can distort a single year’s margin.
Keep a source note beside every number. The note should identify the filing or report, publication date, fiscal period, currency and whether the figure is reported or adjusted. This simple discipline prevents a precise-looking table from mixing incompatible inputs.

Compare revenue by scale, growth and business drivers
Revenue is the starting point, not the verdict. Examine absolute scale, multi-year growth, segment mix, end markets and cyclicality. Ask what physically limits sales: customer demand, wafer capacity, packaging capacity, memory pricing, equipment orders or design-win timing.
Scale and growth metrics
- Revenue level: shows commercial scale but not profitability or cash generation.
- Three- to five-year compound annual growth: reduces the chance that one unusually strong or weak year determines the conclusion.
- Quarterly trend: reveals inflection points, seasonality and inventory corrections.
- Segment mix: separates growth from a high-margin business, a low-margin business or an acquired operation.
- End-market growth: distinguishes exposure to data centers, smartphones, automobiles, industrial equipment, consumer electronics and communications infrastructure.
Growth has different economic meaning across models. A capacity-constrained foundry may have customer demand that exceeds available wafers; adding capacity then determines future revenue but requires large upfront spending. A fabless company can grow rapidly after a successful design win, but production remains dependent on its manufacturing partners. A memory company can increase revenue because prices recover rather than because it sells more bits.
A current foundry example
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) reported 2025 consolidated revenue of US$122.42 billion, up 35.9% year over year in U.S.-dollar terms, in its 2026 annual report covering 2025. The same report says it served 534 customers and manufactured 12,682 products using 305 technologies during 2025. Those figures indicate scale and breadth, but they should not be compared with a fabless company’s product count as if the measures had the same meaning: a foundry manufactures customers’ designs across technologies, while a designer usually reports its own product portfolio.

Read gross and operating margins in context
Gross margin measures revenue left after cost of goods sold. Operating margin additionally subtracts operating expenses such as research and development, selling and administration. Both are useful, but neither independently proves that one semiconductor business has superior economics.
What can move gross margin
- Product and node mix: leading-edge or specialized products may command different prices and costs than mature-node or commodity products.
- Utilization: a fab’s fixed depreciation and labor are spread over fewer wafers when demand falls.
- Yield: defective dies or a difficult process ramp raise the cost of saleable chips.
- Inventory actions: reserves and write-downs can lower gross profit during a correction.
- Manufacturing footprint: owned fabs bring depreciation, utilities and maintenance; outsourced production shifts cost into wafer and packaging prices.
- Foreign exchange and input costs: currency, energy, materials and logistics can change reported profitability.
What can move operating margin
Operating margin reflects the cost of developing the next generation of products. A company with a high gross margin may reinvest heavily in R&D, leaving a lower operating margin than a slower-growing peer. Compare R&D as a percentage of revenue, selling expenses, stock-based compensation and restructuring charges before treating the difference as pricing power.
TSMC reported a 59.9% gross margin and a 50.8% operating margin for 2025. These numbers belong to a large foundry with substantial fixed assets and a specific technology and customer mix; they are not a universal benchmark for fabless designers or memory producers.
Use historical cross-model data carefully
A U.S. Bureau of Industry and Security report published in 2023 found that fabless companies’ group net margin was 32% versus 20% for IDMs in 2022. The report also found that, in a given year during 2017–2022, an average 44% of fabless companies reported a net loss, compared with 17% of IDMs. These are historical, cross-company observations, not current forecasts or a promise that fabless companies will always be more profitable. The higher aggregate margin can coexist with greater dispersion and a higher frequency of losses.
| Margin question | Evidence to inspect | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Is the gross-margin gap structural? | Product mix, node mix, utilization, yields and manufacturing ownership | Separates durable economics from a temporary factory or inventory effect |
| Is operating leverage real? | R&D, selling costs and revenue growth over several periods | Shows whether costs grow slower than sales or simply move with the cycle |
| Are profits cash-backed? | Operating cash flow, capital expenditure, working capital and free cash flow | Prevents depreciation or working-capital swings from being ignored |
| Is the period representative? | Utilization, reserves, impairments and restructuring notes | Identifies one-time or cycle-bottom distortions |
Measure customers, concentration and end markets
Customer analysis answers two separate questions: how diversified is demand, and how dependent is the company on a particular industry or geography? A broad customer count does not eliminate concentration if a few accounts generate most revenue, and a company may have a small number of direct customers that serve many downstream buyers.
Recommended Free Tools
Metrics to collect
- Number of customers, if disclosed, and the definition used.
- Revenue from each customer above the company’s stated threshold.
- Percentage of revenue from the largest customer and largest three or five customers, when available.
- End-market revenue by percentage and by absolute value.
- Geographic revenue and manufacturing exposure.
- Whether customers are direct, distributors, contract manufacturers or platform companies.
Disclosures are not standardized. One company may identify customers above 10% of revenue; another may use a different threshold or disclose only that no customer exceeded it. Different fiscal periods and definitions mean that “not disclosed” is not the same as zero concentration.

Examples of concentration disclosures
KLA’s 2026 Form 10-K reports that TSMC exceeded 10% of KLA revenue in each fiscal year ended June 30, 2024, June 30, 2025 and June 30, 2026. This is a customer-concentration fact for KLA, an equipment supplier; it does not measure TSMC’s own customer concentration. The example shows why the direction of the relationship matters when reading a filing.
TSMC’s 2025 report states that it served 534 customers. That count demonstrates breadth, but it does not disclose an equal share of revenue among those customers. Treat it as evidence of a wide customer base, not proof that no major account matters.
End-market resilience
Map each company’s revenue to demand drivers. Automotive and industrial products may have longer qualification cycles and inventory corrections; smartphones can be seasonal; data-center demand can be concentrated among a few large platforms; memory demand can swing with pricing and supply. A company with slower headline growth but balanced end markets may carry less downside risk than a faster-growing company tied to one cycle.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsInclude capital intensity, capacity and cash flow
Semiconductor economics are inseparable from capital requirements. The U.S. Bureau of Industry and Security estimated semiconductor-industry capital expenditures at $182 billion in 2022 and described the industry as highly capital intensive, with material differences among segments and companies.
For manufacturers, compare capital expenditure as a percentage of revenue, depreciation, capacity additions, utilization and the timing of new fabs or equipment. A high capex year can depress free cash flow while expanding future capacity. For fabless companies, inspect outsourced wafer commitments, packaging availability, inventory days and advance payments even when owned-fab capex is modest. For equipment suppliers, examine customer-capex cycles, backlog conversion and service revenue.
Use a cash-flow bridge rather than subtracting capex mechanically from net income:

- Start with operating cash flow.
- Separate working-capital movements, especially inventory and receivables, from recurring earnings.
- Subtract maintenance and growth capital expenditure, identifying the company’s own definitions.
- Review acquisitions, divestitures, lease payments and shareholder returns.
- Check net debt, maturities and interest costs against the cycle’s downside case.
Value companies on one date and one definition
Valuation is time-sensitive. State the market-data date, share-price basis, diluted share count and whether you are using market capitalization or enterprise value. A multiple without an as-of date is not a reproducible comparison.

Choose the denominator that fits the model
| Metric | Useful when | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Price-to-earnings (P/E) | Earnings are positive and reasonably representative of the cycle | Misleading when earnings are depressed, temporarily elevated or negative |
| Enterprise value/EBITDA | Comparing companies with different debt, cash and depreciation profiles | EBITDA excludes the capital spending that matters greatly to fabs and equipment suppliers |
| Price-to-sales | Profit is temporarily negative or margins differ substantially | Ignores whether revenue converts to cash and can reward low-quality sales |
| Price-to-free-cash-flow | Cash generation is positive and capex is measured consistently | Highly cyclical capex can make one year appear unusually cheap or expensive |
| EV/EBIT | Depreciation is economically meaningful and operating profit is positive | Still depends on cycle position and accounting for impairment or leases |
Compare P/E with P/E, EV/EBITDA with EV/EBITDA and price-to-sales with price-to-sales within suitable peer groups. Do not place a fabless designer, a leading-edge foundry and a memory producer in one unqualified multiple ranking. Use normalized earnings or a cycle range when current profit is clearly abnormal, and show the assumptions rather than presenting a single “fair” number.
No current, fully comparable peer-multiple table is established here. To publish live multiples, recalculate them from same-date market prices and each company’s latest filings. Historical industry averages can provide context, but they are not forecasts for an individual company.
A practical semiconductor comparison worksheet
Build the analysis in stages so that a missing disclosure does not become an invented zero.
- Classify each company. Mark fabless, IDM, foundry, memory, OSAT, equipment or hybrid, with segment notes.
- Normalize periods. Record fiscal year-end, quarter, currency and consolidation scope.
- Collect operating data. Enter revenue, three- to five-year growth, segment mix, end markets, gross margin, operating margin, R&D, capex and free cash flow.
- Explain the margin. Add utilization, yields, inventory reserves, depreciation, product mix and manufacturing exposure.
- Map customers. Record named customers, thresholds, customer count, geographic exposure and “not disclosed” items.
- Set valuation date. Use one market-data date, one share-count convention and the metric suited to the peer group.
- Write a qualified conclusion. Identify the strongest business-model economics, the most exposed risk and the evidence that could change the assessment.
Common comparison mistakes and how to correct them
Ranking revenue without classifying the seller
Problem: A foundry’s wafer revenue is treated as equivalent to a fabless company’s chip revenue. Correction: Compare scale within the same model first, then explain cross-model differences.

Treating undisclosed concentration as zero
Problem: A filing’s silence is interpreted as diversification. Correction: Label the field “not disclosed” and describe the disclosure threshold.
Mixing fiscal years and currencies
Problem: Growth and margins describe different demand environments. Correction: Align periods where possible and show the remaining mismatch prominently.
Using a stale or undated multiple
Problem: Share prices and earnings expectations have changed. Correction: Recalculate market capitalization or enterprise value on a stated date and preserve the input prices and share count.
Assuming historical averages are forecasts
Problem: A historical fabless-versus-IDM margin gap is projected mechanically into the future. Correction: Treat historical data as context and test the company’s current product mix, cycle position and capital plan.
How to reach a defensible conclusion
A strong comparison does not produce one universal winner. It explains which company has the greatest scale, which has the most resilient demand, which converts sales into operating profit, which requires the most capital, and what the market is already pricing in. Revenue growth is more informative when tied to capacity and end-market drivers; margins are more informative when tied to utilization, yields, mix and R&D; customer data is more informative when thresholds and periods are explicit; and valuation is meaningful only with a date and a consistent denominator.
Use TSMC’s 2025 results as a model for the level of disclosure worth seeking: revenue, growth, gross margin, operating margin, customer count, product count and technology breadth in one clearly identified period. Then apply the same questions to each peer, preserving the differences that make semiconductor businesses economically distinct.
